I have heard great things from other parents about Great Hearts schools and wanted to find out for…read moremyself. We applied this year and were fortunate to have been drafted through lottery. My daughter loved her old school and was quite disappointed when we told her that she was going to a new school. However, after 4 months, she has acclimated well and have nothing but good things to say about her teachers and classmates. She finds the work challenging and exciting. The school has taught her and our family a new way to approach reading. They teach Latin and have poetry wars. They also have an after school program that is an extension to their education and not just babysitting. The after school teachers help with homework and pick up is until 6 pm. They also have after school clubs with nominal charge. What is most important to my family was the school's faculty and their program for kids with special needs. My son was diagnosed with a rare disorder in October, that affected him neurologically. Some of the staff from school and after school program visited him, including Mr. Brogran (assistant headmaster). We love his teacher Mrs. Laird. She is a smart, kind, and loving teacher. She visited him in the hospital twice. My son had missed 2 1/2 months of school from being sick. Ms. Ernest (teacher), has been so patient in teaching him at home. She has been an important part of his education. We drive to school at least an hour twice a day, sometimes longer. We decided to move closer to the school since our kids loved being there.

I like the safety and security of knowing someone can't just walk into the school whenever they want, and I like how they treat the students like adults and keep them informed of any changes and not just depend on the adults to let the kids know whats up. The teachers are very understanding and give students time to complete assignments they didnt have time to cover in school. Not all schools are that understanding.

Mathnasium has helped my daughters tremendously! They started at center at Bitters and West Ave…read more when they were in 7th and 8th grade with Algebra and Algebra II. I looked at other styles of Math tutoring and other Mathnasium locations and I BELIEVE THIS METHOD AND THIS SPECIFIC LOCATION IS BEST!!! I am a believer in a firm foundation in math and this program gave us a way to achieve that foundation. My older daughter had a few things she did not understand and the staff was great at explaining the solutions in different ways and then making sure she understood the concept before moving on. My younger daughter is a speed racer on all homework and they were able to convince her to slow down and minimize careless mistakes. They also convinced her that "her way", which yielded incorrect answers was not the best way to do the problems. The center's biggest accomplishment was that both of them like going and want to go. I would have never guess that could have happened. Both my daughters liked and respected every tutor and staff member they encountered. The best way to work the program to receive the most value, is to have the student tested (required), then have the student work through their individually prescribed program to ensure the student has a mastery of mathematical content at least to the level they are taking in school. They understand that we all have real lives and school homework and tests do not pause until the student is ready. For these cases, they are more than willing to help the student understand the current concept the class is working on and to help with their homework. I was surprised to see what concepts from past grades my daughters needed to complete to mastery. I also feel a lot better knowing that holes have been filled which enables them to better understand new concepts. Basic tutoring puts a band-aid on a symptom, Mathnasium strives to diagnose the problem causing to the symptom. By strengthening past weaknesses, your child will be more capable of learning the new concepts in class the first time it is taught. Another thought....you know those kids that are always good at math and are messing up the curve on what seems like every test? They go to Mathnasium too! If I had it to do over again, I would go before I started seeing problems with their math. An added bonus....Probably the best thing each kid leaves Mathnasium with, besides a small piece of candy :), is a bold confidence in themselves and their ability to master math! Yes, it costs money, and no, it isn't super cheap, but the value greatly exceeds the cost. Not understanding math does not fix itself for the majority of people. Don't let your child grow up to be one of those people that believes they just don't get math. Given the right tools and encouragement, everyone can thrive in math.

I give this business less than 1 Star out of 5 Stars…read more Nestled between a sex shop and a CBD store, Mathnasium of San Antonio, has gone from a stellar business under the previous ownership of Mrs. Mary Patrick who had multiple Phd candidate tutors and low tutor to student ratio, to a lack-luster tutoring business with teen tutors constantly on their cell phones and students not receiving the attention required for real math progress. My children attended Mathnasium for 3 years. 2 years under Mrs. Mary and 1 yr under Mrs. Navaro (the new owner). The quality of tutoring is not worth the large expense being asked of parents under the new owner's business model. The new management is interested in getting the most money out of parents without providing the highest caliber of tutoring. Mr. Navaro is not a skilled math tutor. She has difficulty with anything beyond elementary math whereas the previous owner, Mrs. Patrick had 30+ yrs of math experience and could navigate the tutoring business. Presently, with COVID 19, Mathnasium offers online tutoring. The online Mathnasium forum is difficult to maneuver and is constantly having technical problems. The new owner will dazzle you with her smile and promises of amazing progress but the commitment to your child will not be heart felt. I strongly recommend hiring a private tutor who can provide your child consistent attention at the SAME price or lower that you will pay Mathnasium of San Antonio.

I enrolled 3 kids, and was hoping for a better experience. We had to miss a couple classes and the company only allows you to make one up. Additionally, it has to be done within two weeks. They have very few class offerings, 1 to be exact. I asked for another option and they wouldn't offer one. I asked if they could extend the makeup period by a week and they said no. I asked if they could be flexible and work with me and they said no. Again, no empathy. So I said I'd have to cancel, bc I can't be losing money if they are so rigid and they said ok and cancelled for me. Again, I just wanted them to be flexible so I wouldn't lose those lessons, but the call center's lack of empathy just convinced me that they're not a good organization to do business with. Be cautious especially if you think your child may have to miss a lesson or two along the way. They will not allow you many (if any) options to reschedule. You're better off finding a different company.
