Cookeville Rescue Mission

Cookeville Rescue Mission

(1 review)

I called the main number for the mission twice in the morning on a Sunday and there was no answer…read more The first two times I was prompted to press 1 for the emergency shelter and 1 for the women's shelter; albeit it was Sunday so no answer, it just rang and rang. I phoned again and pressed the option for the men's shelter and spoke to a gentleman that tried to transfer me but instead I went into a personal mailbox for one of the employees and then I was disconnected. On My fourth call into the main number I reached the same gentleman again and he handed the phone over to a woman. I explained that I was in need of emergency shelter for a minimum of two days. She informed me there was one bed open in the women's shelter. I explained I had a backpack and a personal bag. No problem come in. I had someone drive me 20 miles in only to be told I could not bring my backpack in. Please be specific when speaking to the staff. My backpack is a professional pack with tent and attached bedroll and they told me this is unacceptable. The staff asked if I was involved in a domestic violence case and I said, "Verbal abuse, yes". She phoned another facility and they were full. She told me to leave my pack with the person that drove me in. (????)My gear cost over 400 dollars and that is all that I have left. I am homeless and have terminal breast cancer. I had to chuckle as I walked out and saw the bible quote about helping and doing unto others. I was left on the highway in 90 degree heat! I made sure they heard me outside when I said, "Well there you have it, Christians they call themselves Christians". We now live in a world where challenges and problems are not confronted with logic and genuine caring but instead with my way or the highway, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. And yes in my case I do literally mean highway. Horrible people skills!
