I'd heard good things about Ayers House & had been looking forward to going on a tour there for a while now. I went yesterday & it was incredibly disappointing. I paid $10 for a half hour tour of 4 rooms; a tour guide who kept repeating herself & didn't know what anything was; the lights were only on in one room & the shutters were up so no-one could really see anything (not that all the globes were working in that room anyways).
It was supposed to be a special tour for the ANZAC centenary, but there was a lot wanting. We saw a kitchen, a bedroom, a sitting room & an officers dining room. There are 43 rooms in the house & that was all we got to see! Plus, our guide got confused in the corridor & we ended up back in one of the first rooms we'd seen.
There weren't any pictures about the ANZAC's, no photo's of men living in Ayers at the time of the war, it was just a few pieces of furniture from when it was a rest accommodation for soldiers & a tour guide who didn't seem to know anything about it.
I'm told the usual exhibit will be back next year & I will go back to see that. From other people's reviews I don't think this was the usual sort of tour & I will definitely give Ayers a second chance.
p.s. I bought a candle in the shop as I was leaving. The person at the counter dropped it & quickly fumbled it into a bag. I found out when I got home that she'd broken it & I cut my hand on it. I know she's a volunteer, but that just wasn't a nice thing to do. read more
