The food was so good in fact, that we came nearly every week for the time we stayed in Castlemaine. There's options for vegetarians as well, it's not your traditional pub food fare. I really liked the feel of the place. It feels familiar and welcoming, vibrant and chill all at the same time. The staff here make you feel at home. It's bustling with locals, there's heaps of live music. And there's a vibin' beer garden back patio. The Bridge Hotel is located right across from the Castlemaine botanic gardens. Just a stone's throw away from the station but away enough from anything that it seems to stand alone. Can't wait to venture back for Mondays in Mexico!

They then returned to the kitchen (which can be seen from the table we were sitting at), and proceeded to physically POINT at us while in conversation with another staff member. The other staff member then visibly rolled her eyes. I'm not sure whether it was because we specifically checked to make sure soy milk was used (sorry for being lactose intolerant, I guess?), but I would definitely prefer to think it was that over the alternative, which is that the staff were discriminating against us based on our relationship. Well, it turned out that I was going to stay here for a lot longer that I expected because even though it was going to take a little time for my meal to be cooked, as soon as I sat down I heard my name called out and sure enough, sitting at a table around the corner, were a group of friends. The steak was okay, but not really the best that I have, but the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff certainly made up for that. I also have to admit that it was a pretty nice pub, with a typical country atmosphere, and while they did have a craft beer on tap, it happen to be James Squire, so I tend not to consider that to be a member of the craft beer family.

There's a quaint little courtyard, a substantial upper deck balcony offering outside seating and plenty of room inside by the bar or in a separate dining area. The warm welcome you'll receive puts many Melbourne bars to shame, and although it's a little on the expensive side, a place like this is worth it. We ordered a pot of beer from Belgium, one of the nicest glasses of wine I've ever had, and a cheese platter. Absolutely delightful. If you're up this way, the Royal George is a must.

Firstly the steak wasn't a scotch (I'm a local cattle farmer and know my beef). It was cooked to my order (well done) but the portion size wouldn't have filled a 10 year old kid. It came with a salad (a bit of lettuce, maybe half a tomato and a slice or two of onion - very basic). Dad had the lambs fry, it hardly had any lambs fry in the meal, he was most disappointed. Mum had the fish which was ok. We all left disappointed (Mum included cause of my and Dads meals) and will not return.
