When I arrived to pick it up, I was disappointed to find a $2 charge for swapping out Tempura for $1 cheaper Yaki in my sushi box. The hostess refused to take the $2 off the bill. Authentic sushi is made by the Japanese owner. A clue was the ethnic Japanese group I saw there who was apparently in town for business. They wanted the real thing, apparently. I have never had a bad experience at Awabi, and I've been there over a dozen times. The sashimi is always fresh and delicious, the sake is amazing, the kimchi is killer, and the decor is adorable! It can be a bit pricey for dinner, but lunch prices are very reasonable. I'm so happy to have found a good sushi place in Winchester that has a variety of veggie sushi! We went here for a late lunch on Super Bowl Sunday, so the place was empty when we walked in. The waitress was super friendly and gave us menus and sushi order sheets. I saw some reviews that said the decor was lacking, but I think they've taken care of that now because I thought it had a nice atmosphere. There are a bunch of cute japanese cat pictures on the wall, a small display of sake glasses and chopsticks and trays, a room divider screen, etc. The chairs are wooden and they have super comfy cushions on them, which is a huge bonus with me because I find wooden chairs way uncomfortable to sit in for long periods of time. There was music playing but it wasn't too loud and the place seemed pretty casual. After she seated us, the waitress told us that the guy who makes the sushi had just stepped out but she called him right away to get him to come back. You get free soup or salad and we chose salad. When we ate our salad (very yummy, by the way, with a ginger-peanut dressing) and the sushi guy wasn't back yet, she offered to give us some soup as well. We declined since we had ordered an appetizer and by the time we ate our appetizer, the guy was there making our sushi... so it didn't cause any real delay for us. What we ordered: Veggie Gyoza 1 order Avocado Rolls 1 order California Veggie Rolls 1 order Vegetarian Rolls (This was listed as a special at the bottom of the sushi list) The veggie gyoza came out on a bamboo steamer tray and they were crispy and delicious! There were 6 of them and they had a variety of veggies in them. The avocado rolls were amazing! They were "taller" than most I've had before and the piece of avocado in each one was quite large and perfectly ripe, not brown at all. The California veggie rolls were pretty fantastic as well. They had asparagus, cucumber, and avocado in them. Everything about them tasted fresh and yummy. The asparagus was well cooked, but still had a little crispness to it. The vegetarian rolls were probably our favorite. They were much larger than the other two varieties we tried (like the size of the cap on a wide mouth gatorade haha) and they had marinated shiitaki, inari, pickle, radish, and a few other things that all combined to make a really interesting flavor. They also had a slight crunch to them. After eating all of that, we were still hungry, so we ordered more avocado and california veggie rolls. We wanted more of the vegetarian rolls, but I'm not supposed to have soy and as I mentioned, they had inari in them. For everything we got, our bill was $30. Pretty awesome for that much food... We will definitely be back again!!! _______________________________________________ I updated my review and took away one star after another visit. We took some out of town friends here for sushi and they ordered california rolls, which contain caviar. Our veggie rolls were brought out on a separate plate, but they had caviar ALL OVER THEM. Veggie sushi should be made on a separate surface, not the same surface they use to prepare raw fish sushi. There was no way to pick the caviar off the sushi... it was smashed into the rice. Wonderful! The Miso soup and Udon were some of the best I'd ever had!!! The sushi was made with fresh ingredients and was very good! The cold house sake was good too. We ordered a seaweed, crab, and caviar salad and 4 different rolls not realizing we'd get steamed edamame and the soups while we waited!!! We were almost too full to enjoy our sushi when it came!!!! The ambiance was nice and the lication on the Loudoun St. Walking mall was great as that is an up and coming area again!!! We'll definitely be back!! read more

Came in for lunch. Ordered a sushi roll (very good), bulgogi and Bim Bimbap. Good food with nice atmosphere. Place was a little small but they do have seating outside. The waitress seemed a little stressed and was not very personable. There was also a small child screaming and playing in the back of the restaurant, not surprising since it is family owned and run. The owner seemed very nice as she told us about their homemade kimchi. Will be going back to try some of the other items on the menu. read more

On 7/15/16 @ 19;38, my wife and I decided to visit our usual Sushi but be realized it was closed for renovation. And we decided to try downtown Winchester at this small little place called the "Awabi. " Since we have both walked by this place several times and not eaten there; this might be the perfect opportunity. We found seats outside. But -the seats outside are the first thing one recognizes; wide and awkward garden furniture, - because they are built for 300 lbs wide butt Sami wrestlers? If you leaned back you were lost and I guess its all about the size of a body. Anyways, as we waited, we noticed the windows and sloppiness of the entire restaurant -dirty and poorly cleaned, making me wonder if we picked the wrong place to grab a small bite. Then a young lady came out and slipped on the stupid step leading into the restaurant; surprisingly I thought that would have been a stipulation of the City as it is an awkward first step? She got up, embarrassed and left immediately. Time had passed, and usually if I am not greeted within the first 5-10 minutes I get up and leave. But my wife insisted we stay. Meanwhile later, well into 15-20 minutes later our waiter shows up and said that they ran out of menus and he would bring two as soon as he could. Another ten minutes had passed and he showed up with the menus and asked us if what we would like to drink? We did get our drinks fast enough but I was becoming very disappointed at our choice. We had made a decision to go with the Spider Roll Sushi and Shrimp Tempura Roll. It was almost 40 minutes that we waited for the food to be brought to our table. During this time outside, children of Latino descent were actually playing nearby and taking a shower in the water fountains. And normally outside bands don't bother me but these guys were off key and horrible. We were finally served our rolls and honestly I became totally disappointed. Every where else in Winchester for this price, Sushi rolls are between 6 or 7 cut rolled pieces! And when I looked at our rolls, I was disgusted at the size for about $10. Thin, small and only four rolls to a plate. Both of ours were maybe four inches across were served. All in all the food is ok its fresh. But thats really the point isn't it? Sushi is normally fresh? Our check came to Total $32.67 I tipped the waiter $5. (22%) -Well more than he deserved. (But I think he was being over worked?). So the"Awabi is an poor alibi of a Japanese or Korean service? . And a bad joke for sushi and way too much time spent waiting and hoping it might get better? In my opinion, go elsewhere. read more

We don't even live here & love this place! We come up to visit family a few times a year, but are from Atlanta. We found this place last December & were so happy to have a great sushi place to come to when we visit. They have such fresh rolls & several that include white tuna which we usually have to request as an add-in. Try the shumai soup on a cold night. You'll love it! Food was okay but comes out of the kitchen slowly. Ridiculous length of time for everyone at the table's food. My husband and I had dinner there tonight. I ordered the Loudon Street roll and he ordered tempura. Munched on overcooked edamame while we watched a group of 14 get served one...at...a...time. Took about 20 minutes for my roll to arrive and my husband told me to go ahead without him. Another 15 minutes and his food still hadn't arrived. Meanwhile, last person of the 14 finally got food. My husband cancelled and we left. Understand why it may take some time to feed 14 people, but not 40 minutes. And a table of two, 15 minutes apart?!?! read more

Every single time I go, I'm never disappointed. An amazing place for Japanese cuisine/culture! The interior is absolutely beautiful with Japanese decorations beautifying the place with (sometimes) playing oriental music! The food is absolutely wonderful. One of my personal favorite would have to be the Awabi chicken. Savory chicken topped with the awabi sause which makes almost anything taste good. The miso soup is always tasteful and comes with almost any dish! I'd highly recommend this place to anyone who wants great Japanese food at a great price! read more

We were not pleased with our experience at Awabi. If you're looking for sushi or Ramen, I would recommend Chop Stick Cafe or CTE (Come to Eat). The service was very good, but the food was disappointing. We had the Asparagus Yaki to start which was totally fine. The sushi roll was also fine, but we found the portion sizes of both dishes to be a bit small in relation to the price. I had the Spicy Seafood Salad for my entree, which was served in something similar to a martini glass. A true test of chopstick skills! This dish was a bit bland. The Kimchi Ramen was appalling. I am almost certain the noodles were freeze-dried (like the Top Ramen you purchase at the grocery story). It was exceptionally salty, and I certainly hope there were no "flavor packets" used in the dish. Other restaurants in town make terrific ramen, and I hope that the two ramen dishes on this menu get removed if fresher ingredients aren't brought in. read more

Regardless of what some may say--there is very definate difference in the quality and presentation of sushi and sashimi (or any Japanese food for that matter), between Japanese and non-Japanese owned restaurants. Best sushi in Winchester! The service when I was there was exceptional, I did visit at 3 in the afternoon and there were only two other groups of diners. I thought the complimentary salad and miso was a nice touch. We had the Loudon roll which was amazing. I cant remember what all was in it now, but it had an eel sauce on top it was huge, crunchy, sweet, savory, just... perfect. For around $11. All together we spent $50 and had 1 mega roll(loudon), 3 speacialty roll, and 3 japaness beers. Doesnt sound like alot but I have never left a sushi ressturant so full and satisfied. I think I will never step into another sushi resturant again unless it's Awabi. read more

I have to be honest, before I went to this place, my experience with sushi was less than pleasant. In fact, it took some convincing from my friends to actually try it again. But, all the previous reviews said the fish was fresh, so I was willing to give it a try. First, the atmosphere is very chill. It's bare as far as decorations are concerned, but not in a bad way. I've been twice so far (third time this weekend!), and even when it's fairly full, it's a quiet relaxing feel. One thing I will say, there are not a lot of tables, maybe 4 or 5 tables for four people, plus a window bar and stools at the sushi bar. But, I haven't had to wait yet. The staff is very friendly and welcoming, willing to answer questions about the food/portions etc. Both times i've been, we got complimentary soup (the last time soup and salad), and the soup is AMAZING! I would pay the $1.50 just to have it with each meal. On to the sushi. The first time, I wasn't feeling exceptionally adventurous, so I stuck with a simple salmon roll. They were a bit on the small side, but as previous reviews said, the fish tasted exceptionally fresh. The price wasn't bad either (though again, I don't eat sushi much to compare prices), about $4-5 for 6 rolls. I also tried a seared tuna appetizer they had, FANTASTIC, though a bit smaller on the portion for the price. One of the people I went with ordered the Dragon rolls (cooked eel rolls with an eel sauce), and I finally worked up the courage to try one, i'm now a total convert. I believe it had avocado and either crab or some sort of fish as well, with this sweetish sauce, and I can't WAIT to order some this weekend. One thing to note before you go down to the walking mall: They are NOT open on Monday! We made a trip down one Monday without checking, and ended up eating at Thai Winchester instead. read more

Awabi was excellent. We have been very concerned about additives in our food lately. So we asked if they had msg in their soups, which is common practice at most recent restaurants. Not only was the server knowledgable about this but he assured us that all of their food at no msg and they take pride in their food. In fact most of it is made in house. Service was very aware of what was going on. Separated my sushi from the rest of the tables because I am pregnant and I got cooked sushi. They offered us Miso soup on the house. He made great suggestions as our first time there. I went wanting to try the ramen, but I ended up getting the udon be he has highly recommended it. My husband, and nephew got the rice bowls an where raving about it. The sushi was very fresh. I got the blue crab California roll. Very happy they offered a real crab option instead of crab sticks. My husband and nephew got the sweet sea shrimp sushi. And I hear it was very good, I wish I could have tried it, but it is not cooked. We will most certainly be back! Not a single complaint. I do not normally let my daughter get lemonade places because it is just minute maid typically, with high fructose corn syrups, food color, and additives. Love this place! Atmosphere is very inviting, and the service was friendly and top notch. I ordered a couple sushi rolls, some sahimi, and the vegetable tempura. The fish tasted very fresh, and the tempura was perfectly done. There were some creative sounding sushi offerings on the menu, but I felt like sticking with a few tried and true favorites, and I was not dissapointed. Pretty good place overall. Not very authentic, but the food is good and the prices aren't outrageous, and for Winchester, having any sort of decent Asian food is already an achievement. Although the decor is aiming for Japanese, I'm fairly sure the owners are Korean and therefore there's a lot of Korean influence going on. I always end up getting the tonkatsu (pork cutlet) and it's always delicious. Make sure to eat it with the sauce! The owners are nice and all but the wait staff is very slow and not very polite at all. My husband had the sushi and was less than impressed. I had the teriyaki chicken and never before have I had such a small amount of chicken at a restaurant. The chicken was also extremely dry and crunchy. Last time I checked chicken isn't supposed to be crunchy. The drink selection is next to nothing and if you order soda it's coming in a can. Probably won't be coming back to this place which is a shame because the location is great. read more
