Skudin Surf American Dream - getting ready to paddle into that wave!

Skudin Surf American Dream

Skudin Surf helped inspire my natural surfer boyfriend into surfing!…read more I bought the 2 Hour Beginner Lesson ($125), and every detail they've given me in the email has been accurate. I have never woken up this early much to meet a 7AM class, but a staff member was indeed there to greet and guide us at 6:15 by Parking Lot B. For the beginner lesson, we were a full class of around 10 people. They first give you a rundown on safety measures and instructions on how to pop up and hold your board. Boards are picked and provided to you. After practicing a couple pop-ups, we were off into the wave pool! There were around 3 instructors with a lifeguard on standby. The rest of the class is you filing into a line to practice surfing on every wave. I was literally tired after attempting one, but it does get very fun when you do end up popping up and riding the wave! The instructors are also super professional and will offer you tips as they hold your board for you to get on and push you into each wave. I was being a Debbie Downer at one point, but they are patient and optimistic in your success! Make sure to bring waterproof sunscreen because the sun is STRONG there lol. It may not be a beach, but it sure felt like one when I realized I got tan. Being the only indoor simulated wave pool in the NY area, this is a must-try if you're interested in surfing and not sure if you want to commit just yet, especially in the ocean!

Booked an intermediate session and received a confirmation email a couple weeks before the session…read more Even filled out a waiver and received a confirmation of the waiver a day before. I traveled over an hour from the city at 7am to go to the session only to have no one there, i called and texted the provided contact number a few times, all calls going directly to voicemail. The mall is closed at this time so there is no one around, a bit creepy especially when traveling without a car on public transit. I had to flag down a worker in the building who got in contact with Skudin who then confirmed the session was cancelled. Upon emailing them, they notified me that they sent an email the day before and that I had opened it (I hadn't received or opened it) that the session was cancelled, refunded and that they'd give me a 25% off voucher. Disappointing but fine, I emailed back for the voucher code, still haven't received the voucher. I also only received the cancellation email a couple hours after my session was expected to start.

However, the way the billing was handled was extremely disappointing and honestly very misleading. I was told that adding two additional guests would not be a problem, and at no point was I informed there would be an extra $150 charge. To only bring this up after the event is unacceptable. That kind of information should be clearly communicated at the time the request is made so customers can make an informed decision. What made matters worse was receiving a final email stating that my deposit would be kept because of those additional guests. That is completely unprofessional. I paid $2,772.20 for a pizza-making class for 17 kids and 16 adults, and in reality, only 15 kids and 15 adults attended--and only about 8 adults even participated in making pizza. There were no additional materials or accommodations that would justify keeping the deposit. While the event itself was a success, the lack of transparency and the decision to keep the deposit left a very bad impression. Customers should not have to deal with surprise charges after the fact.

When I saw that Hudson Table offers Chef Competition events, I knew it would be a fun option for my…read morehusband and me to check out. The format is basically like the show Chopped - two chefs (with the help of a sous chef) must prepare 3 different courses (app/entrée/dessert) using the ingredients from a mystery basket and are judged by the group. They have a certain amount of time for each round/course, and each mystery basket ingredient must only be used once over the 3 dishes. Each event is capped at 20 people - 12 seats at the counter and 8 seated at two tables behind the counter. Counter seats are only $10 more, however if the counter is sold out, it's totally fine to have a table seat. They encourage you to stand up and walk around, engaging with the chefs as they are preparing each dish. They have tasting sticks and allow you to taste sauces as they are being prepared. It's an intimate setting and it's a great way to learn about their techniques and the various ingredients. Watching them plate 20 dishes is incredible. All the food they prepared was delicious - there wasn't a bad dish. It's basically like having two full 3-course meals however you can take home any leftovers if you can't finish it all. You don't know the mystery ingredients ahead of time and they can't accommodate any allergies/preferences so that's something to keep in mind if you have allergies or are a picky eater. Our main proteins were chicken and steak so no issues there. At the end of each course, you have a score card where you rate each dish on presentation, creativity, and taste. At the end of the final round, we went around the room and told the chefs who we think should be crowned the night's winner. No getting out of telling them to their faces who was your favorite! It was a really fun night. The hostess was great and kept everyone pumped up and made sure our carafe of water was full. Both chef Ed and Guillermo were really cool and friendly - it was great to chat with them. They are amazing chefs. Some tips: don't be late! Don't dress too warmly especially if you are seated at the counter - it gets warm if you are near the stove burners. Bring wine - they have ice buckets for white/rosé. Book as soon as the calendar goes live if you want a counter seat. You are going to smell like oil/fried food when you leave... so ladies, don't get a fresh blowout ahead of time!
