I needed the car early and even though you can rent at 8:30 on Friday, they don't open until 9:00 Saturday and told me I would have to pay a whole SECOND day on the vehicle for just 30 minutes. This was the most awesome pickup and drop off we have ever experienced. If I had not asked a question on pickup, the duration of the pickup would have been seconds, rather than the entire minute it took. Walked in, walked out. Drop off was just as awesome. The only extra time taken was for the worker to go get the mileage. What a great place to rent a car! We will be back! read more

Not only was the interior of the car filthy but it smelled like smoke. There is a huge sign at the rental place saying you will be fined if the car comes back smelling like smoke. When I told them the car smelled like smoke and the inside was filthy they just shrugged. We won't be back to this location. read more

Do not rent from this location. At the time of pickup they didn't disclose the late fee if you return late. At the time of the return the rep stated the late fee would be $10 per day. However, the computers were down and I was told I would get a receipt the next day. When I got the receipt I learned I was charged $100 penalty for a late return. That's a absolutely ridiculous! Not to mention the customer next to me was told since they didn't have the car he reserved he'd have to pay for a more expensive rental. That's ludicrous! They DO NOT clean their rental cars. During this COVID pandemic I was shocked to learn that Avis does not clean cars between renters. The car I received still had the previous renters garbage in it. I had an 8:00 am appointment for the rental. I got there shortly after that time to see customers waiting outside. No one was working there. We called the numbers posted at the door and on the website and were eventually told someone was 5 minutes away. She arrived and said nothing, opened the door and went in the back. She was very rude to all of us like we were bothering her. She even yelled at one customer that she was able to tell her they didn't have a car (even though they did) because she was renting for less than 3 days. They had taken the reservation so if it was a problem they shouldn't have taken it. She never even told me the make/model of my rental just said go out to the left. It was actually on the street to the right. I when she was being rude I told her maybe it would help if she apologized for being late she glared at me and said she had, we just couldn't hear because of the mask. When I returned the car I told the worker that I was surprised during COVID that they do not clean their cars and asked if it was their policy he replied, I don't know about those. What the heck? This place saved me from having to walk home after my car broke down on me. When all the other local car rental companies had shut down for the day...Avis in RB was the only one still open at 4:00p on a Saturday! On top of that, the person that helped me was so awesome that she automatically set my return location for one closer to home, so I didn't have to figure out how to get back to RB to return the car. Make sure you really do a careful walk around the car for any damage, though. They get a lot of cars from the airport and mine actually had a crack and a dent in the bumper. Someone definitely hit something and tried to hide that sucker! If I hadn't looked closely I would've missed it and, with my luck, been charged for someone else's accident. read more

This location is always so helpful and accommodating. My last rental they didn't have any available cars at my reservation time but made sure to call me as soon as one was available and it was very noticeable how stressed out they were about it (the owner cyndie and another female at the counter). I was even given a discount for the trouble. Returning was easy, all I needed to do was fill the gas tank up. The man at the counter was so nice and helpful (allan). I was also very surprised to find out they offer rides home if you live a few miles from the office. This saved me from calling a cab. The young lady that washes cars was able to take me home and was very nice and didn't mind me asking for a ride. If I could give these people zero stars I would. Had the WORST service ever from the associate named Stephanie. We rented a car yesterday in Arizona for a one day rental. Prepaid online in full. Drove the car to San Diego, when we went to turn this car back in at THIS location. Stephanie did not want to help us and could not explain or even wanted to explain why she was double charging us. Rental Went from a prepay one day rental of 123. To 218. After taking to customer service over the phone because this girl Stephanie is absolutely clueless and not interested in doing her job. They are refunding us the difference. But said the reason for the over charge by the store was because we turned it in 2 hours earlier than we were suppose to. I was so extremely disappointed with my most recent rental at this location. Every time I need a rental car I have rented one from this location. Even though the price point is a little higher it is extremely convenient. Also every time I have rented a car from here I have traveled with my small 8 lb. dog. When I returned my rental this past time they wanted to charge an excessive cleaning fee. I was told it could be up to $150 but I would only be charged half. What!?!?! I was told the car was not in the same condition it was when I rented it. What?!?!?!? Never had this been mentioned in the past and i will assure you the car was in the same condition as when I rented it. It took me all of three minutes and a piece of masking tape to remove any trace of dog hair. No where in the rental agreement does it specify pet hair would result in a cleaning fee. Stains? Yes. Odors? Yes. Dog hair? NO! There was such a lack of customer service in what occurred.... I was left baffled. This situation was handled so poorly that I will never use this location again, nor would I recommend them to anyone. We always been our car from this location using budget. I would leave early for budget but I couldn't find the budget Yelp page for this location. This time to decide to rent a Kia Soul for 3 days and it was absolutely perfect we had no complaints with the car whatsoever. The car was actually brand new and it had only about three thousand miles on it when we got it. As a Yelp Elite Member, I advise everyone to avoid this place. They run credit checks and will deny you a car even if you have good credit to get a home mortgage! WORST customer service I've experienced ANYWHERE in the last 10 years from a manager. Had a COSTCO reservation and was running very short on time. The car was reserved the day before. Keep in mind, I've rented NUMEROUS car's in many states and never had issues along with the attitude. Long story short, I was going to pay using my debit card and have enough funds for both the deposit and full rental cost. This company decides to run a "credit check" and I didn't "pass" on my debit card. I could not believe what was happening (that my credit wasn't good enough for them) considering I had been approved for a home mortgage a few days before with a 618 FICO score (see pic attached). This credit check/denial of a rental even if you have the money to pay for it up-front was extremely humiliating and I was so glad I was there by myself and not with anyone else. I tried to explain my situation to the manager but she was negative, offensive and disrespectful when she told me "IM RELSEASING A 35K CAR TO YOU AND NEED THE DEBIT CARD TO TRACK YOU." Her tone came off very defensive and I felt targeted and she made me feel extremely uncomfortable. Like I was a person of danger, a thief, and on top of that my personal credit according to them was so bad that I didn't qualify for a car. I didn't want to put up with anything else and went down the street to enterprise car rental where they have rented cars to me before. Jeff at Enterprise was very helpful and calmed me down when he saw how frustrated and angry I was when I walked in. He was more than glad to take my business and rent a car for me using my debit card for both the deposit and the full amount of the rental. The car I got from them was great and I had a wonderful weekend while on vacation. Please save yourself the possible embarrassment this companies manager might cause you because she clearly doesn't care for customers or sees the whole picture. See attached pics of my good credit where I was approved for a home mortgage a few days before, and my contract with enterprise of having rented a car when AVIS Rancho Bernardo refused to. When I arrived to pick up my rental car, they informed me that they did not have any economy size cars and my reservation was for the other Avis located in Poway. I was dropped off at this location and did not have a form of transportation to get me from the RB Avis to the Poway Avis. One of the employees offered to have her daughter drive me over to the secondary location using their personal vehicle. To make matters uncomfortable, the employees daughter was incredibly unhappy about driving me to the secondary location even though it was her mother's vehicle and her mother was paying for the gas to take me. And was not shy about making sure I knew she was upset about this. She acted childish and unprofessional. She drove me to the secondary location without saying one word, smoking the whole time I was in the vehicle. Worst customer service experience I've had in a long time. Like other reviewers here have posted, the staff here sucks. I checked out my car on a Friday at about 6pm with intent to return it on Sunday at about the same time. Well, they close at 4pm on Sundays and the person who checked me out did not point this out to me. As a result, they were closed when I went to return the car at 5pm. I had to work today, Monday, and was not able to return the car until my lunch hour. Today, I dealt with Cyndie Hollister, the "Agency Operator" (franchise owner) who charged me for an entire extra day. The only thing she "tried harder" to do was to be short and rude with me. This AVIS Car rental dealership is very unprofessional. and sucks in their customer service. I made a Reservation online for a Full SUV that can accommodate 7 people with Wheel Chair and 2 pieces of Luggage. This was for our road trip on July4th weekend 2014. I spoke to "Stephanie" at this location and made confirm she in deed booked a Full SUV that can accommodate our needs. First glitch: after making the reservation via Phone, it never showed up on their AVIS.com system. So multiple calls and time spent to get that re-made. Luckily price did not change between those calls. After all this, Stephanie said "I am guaranteed for Full SUV" with the PRICE I was quoted. But still on avis.com website I couldn't find it to confirm as Full SUV - it kept showing as if I made a reservation for Full Car not Full SUV Second Glitch: Went there to pick up my SUV on 7/2/2014 afternoon around 3:00pm. One guy serving everyone - one guy for the whole Rental? Long lines -no courtesy to say hi -- just waiting in line. Third Glitch Went there to pick up the FULL SUV - the guy named GREG or something showed me a smaller SUV - My own SUV was bigger than this - :-( why would I rent a smaller vehicle than my own two vehicles. I asked him to give me bigger vehicle They had nothing -other than just returned mini-VAN. I was told to walk around and initial for the damage. I did- no PRICE change was mentioned to me then. that Pink card/sheet of paper did not have any info of price change or actual amount that will be charged for the change of vehicle -which BTW, is their fault. I was handed over a mini-VAN with unclean mess - I vacuumed this POS mini-van myself and took for trip. Fourth GLITCH My wife went to return the miniVan after the trip. now this lady "Stephanie's mom" charged my credit card 200$ more than what I was quoted- she gave bull s* reasons -- and said I had initialed after seeing the new price -which was not the case. As an Avis Preferred over the last two decades, I have literally have several hundred rental encounters with Avis staff, both corporate and franchised locations. This particular franchised location, thankfully, is one I have avoided and intend on continue to do so. Avis, especially those in neighborhood locales, tend to be accommodating, customer-friendly, and most of all, extremely helpful. My experience with this place is anything BUT, especially when dealing with a particular staff, let's called her "C". I found C's unwillingness to answer questions, her curt response to my inquiries, her lack of people skills, astonishing for someone who interacts with people in such retail setting. I found customer service essentially non-existent when calling to inquire about my reservation and/or attempting to make modification. They are rude, curt, and unprofessional. I am amazed Avis allows this franchise to continue operating under their name. They remind me of Seinfeld's Soup Nazi. No thank you. My advice, unless my fellow renters must rent from here, do yourself a favor, save a lot of grief by driving a bit further out for better service. Unless, of course, you don't mind getting lectured, snapped at, and mistreated, as a paying customer. Good luck with that. read more

I rent cars out almost every single week usually from Enterprise near the auto Parkway in Escondido. Due to the price gauging, I went the cheaper route and the cheap is the main point of this review. The car was fine, it was just ok. The lady did no inspections, didn't check anything, there could have been damage that I would be responsible for if I didn't take pictures before leaving (major damage on the front bumper). The car had almost 40,000 mi and the breaks were squealing. Overall the car lacked maintenance. Due to rush hour, I was 30 minutes late on the return and she refused to be lenient for at least a one-time option. Enterprise would have done that without any problem because they understand it is safer to drive the speed limit than the weave in between cars to have a rental get back on the exact moment. Life throws lemons we all know that and lemon was thrown and time went by faster than expected. In conclusion, I won't ever rent from this company again because a 30-minute late return cost me a full day more of a rental. What garbage policy is that? I wish I never chose the CHEAPER option. This place is also a dump it looks like an oil changing station and the office is that of a car repair garage, what a joke. This is what you call a very unsatisfied customer. 2 stars because the car was decent, not great just driveable, and no option to choose a car in the same category that I would have preferred but was given the worse off vehicle (damage-wise and miles). I rented a car out from the Rancho Bernardo Avis branch (16558 Bernardo Center Drive, San Diego, CA 92128) on April 26. Let me begin by saying that my experience with this Avis branch has been deplorable. The customer service here is astoundingly hostile. I noticed a mile after I drove out that the gas gauge was not full. The gauge was between "3/4 and 7/8". Nonetheless the staff at the time had negligently marked the reading to Full I immediately called in to report but Mark, the customer service person was downright blunt and insisted the gauge was checked at full the previous night. The next day, I went back to return the vehicle and respectfully brought this to the rep Cynthia's attention. Right off the bat, she accused me of lying and of doctoring the photo of the odometer that I had taken (with time-stamp). I made it clear to her that due diligence was not carried out. Soon after, she tried to sound apologetic and blamed Avis' policy for her oversight and went on this verbal ramble about the branch compelling her to use her own money for gas and what not. The customer service in this branch is non-existent. She was pointblank disrespectful, rude and snotty. It was simply awful dealing with her and I was shocked by her demeanor. I filed a complaint with Avis Car Rental Customer Service with proof of the fuel gauge reading, rental agreement and they promptly responded with an apology, issued me a partial credit and a coupon for future use. Coming to Avis was a big mistake and a complete waste of 1.5hrs. I rent cars almost once a week for work, and I always go straight to enterprise. This time I needed a car on Sunday and unfortunately my local enterprise branch wasn't open. Made a reservation with Avis at higher rate, but once I got to the branch I found out there's a fee for extending my contract if needed. And I always leave my own car at enterprise parking lot, but that was not an option at Avis. We rented our car in another city but returned it at this Avis rental location. The Avis representative (Stephanie) was rude and told us that she would have to charge us an extra $35 for dog fur in the car. We had a short-haired dog in the car and the fur was sparse; yet she made a big deal out of it. We wound up vacuuming the car at home to avoid the charge but truthfully, we think she made us clean the car so that she didn't have to do it herself!! Rental cars are supposed to be cleaned by the staff (not the customer) upon return. This Avis location has reversed the roles. Very dissatisfied with the service and customer care!!! read more

I rent cars for business about 2 or 3 times per month. I've always thought the rental agencys were so corporate. Until of course, I went to Avis in RB. Family run, with great customer service. Cyndie and her crew always have their smiles working overtime. I've only been here a few times so far, but I won't bother with the others any more. I've needed a ride back to my office each time, and they've always accomodated. I highly recommend them, and I'll be back!! P.S. The cars are always clean...NOT SMOKY like the others. read more

Review on Budget/Avis Car Rental on Bernardo Center Dr. San Diego 92128. My wife just picked up a car that she reserved from on the phone Budget car rental through a person assistant. There was a discount of $10 that was applied to the total amount which she paid with credit card. But when she picked up the phone, the Budget rental office in Rancho Bernardo did not want to honor the discount even though it was written on the receipt. Instead, the person in the office gave the corporate phone number to resolve it. When my wife called the number she was again transferred to another customer service, which again said could not resolve it because their computer is down, need to call back in 2 hours. I asked them to take our confirmation # and resolve it themselves, but they did not want to that either. At this point, I got angry, why I have to call around to fix their system problem. It is the problem in their reservation system. But the local office and the corporate office don't want to talk to each other; it is rediculous. I went back to the local office asking them to resolve it since we have to go on our trip. No, the ladies at the local office refused to do so, telling they could not call the corporate office. Instead the owner, or the lady who claimed she was the owner of that office told me to get out of the office or she would call the police! Found out from the lady, that the local Budget offce in Rancho Bernardo is an independent contractor, it does not belong to the Budget car rental. She herself is who cleans the car, no wonder when we checked the car, it was not clean well, found broken glass pieces on the carpet, soft drink grime on the interior door. So I know its the dissatisfied customer that posts reviews, but here goes. Went to rent a car during the pandemic - The Car Lot was absolutely bursting w cars so which one did they give us? I turned the engine on and the needs service light went on. Frankly that is not what I want to see when I rent a car. Really? Went back inside w a picture of the dash and was given another car w white pain on the windshield and side window from a previous test drive per the staff. NO wonder it was not bought, it sounded like my 2003 Saturn. They didn't bother to clean off the paint which was in the middle of the windshield. Ok its COVID, let it go. Rented it for 2 weeks, During that time realized there was no fluid in the windshield cleaner or it was broke, the oil light came on consistently and before we returned it to get a bigger van for a trip to the airport the needs service light came on. I would have tried to exchange it but I knew I was going to go back and exchange it for a large van to drive a lot of luggage to the airport in 2 weeks. Exchanged that car for a van on Saturday which we drove to LAX on Monday. During that period of time the check engine light came on in the Van. Seriously that is not what I want to see when every thing I own is in a van driving to the airport to catch a flight that has already been cancelled twice. I want a Reliable recently serviced vehicle. read more

Let me preface that this review is mainly due to my husband's experience since he made the reservation. There is NO after hours key drop at this location which took time out of my work day having to return the car during their business hours (opens at 7am). Not the greatest face to face customer service with the women that were working at the time we picked up the car. It was frustrating that these women had no idea if Avis was going to charge us a $100 deposit. I had to confirm with my bank after the fact that an additional $100 deposit was charged even though we prepaid the total with a credit card. We had to extend our rental by a day and luckily the young man that helped me over the phone was great. The car (Toyota Camry with ~26K miles) was in pretty good condition. We drove approximately 1000 miles with no mechanical issues which was great. Due to our experience, I doubt we will use this location again. Stay away from this Centre on Bernardo Centre Drive. Although it's a good location for those located in North County, consider that the turnover of car rentals at this centre is a fraction of the activity at SAN airport, the staff here have all the time to knit pick at the time of car returns. They have no empathy and come up with faults that are subjective and not debatable. I decided to avoid them for all future needs. A strong complaint is also in process. read more

I rent from this location for work probably 10 times a year. Admittedly, the staff are a little rough around the edges. But they do try to be nice and if you get to know them you'll find out that they are good people. They have a difficult job (dealing with bratty customers all day) but I appreciate their service.
