We were excited to find an indoor archery range to try out this winter after one of our kids had so much fun with archery at summer camps. I booked the archery experience online which was a super easy process. The experience was 2 hours total and included everything you needed. The location isn't well marked so if it's your first time you may question if you are in the right spot. You probably are! There is a small sign on the door so you enter just to be sure. We were greeted by Paul who was extremely helpful and nice. He walked us through the basics, the range rules and then helped us determine dominant eyes and got us set up with the right bows. After a few shots where he watched us and gave us some pointers we were off! During our time he was always available to help but also just let us shoot at our own pace. While we were there different groups came in. The pacing was nice as it allowed everyone to get the same over ire and setup but didn't hugely interrupt others archery range time. We didn't quite use our whole two hours because our arms were getting a little sore as beginners but it was so much fun! It seems like a popular place also since, as we were leaving, every spot on the archery range was full. They can accommodate both 10 yards and 20 yard shooters and have spots for up to 16. You can bring your own bow, which a few did, or they can set you up with the basics there as well. For the length of time, the pricing is really reasonable and a fun outing for the whole family! read more

My partner and I decided to try the "Archery Experience" as a fun family activity with our kids. None of us have any archery experience or any other shooting sport experience. Coming in as a novice, it could be a little intimidating, but the staff at Average Joes make it so easy. Paul walked us through everything from safety, to figuring out eye dominance, to shooting techniques. I found out that I am left eye dominate and should shoot left handed even though right handed. He then gave us pointers as we shot. He was very patient especially with our child to keep them from being frustrated. We had 2 hours to shoot, which was more than enough. Our shoulders and fingers got tired before our time was up. For the experienced archer, they have both 10 yard and 20 yard lanes and a bunch of equipment for sale. Overall, I would highly recommend the archery experience if you want to try something new! read more

I think I may have found my new calling. A friend and I signed up for the beginner's course and I instantly fell in love with Average Joe's and archery. The knowledgeable staff took us through the various bows, explained all the equipment, and gave some nice lessons on proper technique. Then, we were given ample time to try our hand at the craft. I can't wait to go back and have another go. You can rent equipment and time on the indoor range. They did say they are hoping to add some axe throwing into the mix as well. This would be great for group outings or just something new to try on your own. My friend once tried archery at the Ren Fest and loved it so when I saw Average Joe's Archery on a Groupon deal I knew she'd love it! We weren't sure how the place would be so we booked the Archery Experience for two and met up there. The building from the outside looked like some type of abandoned workshop with faded lettering of a past business across the top and but i noticed a little sign on the door with their logo so knew I was in the right spot. Walking in I saw my friend and some serious bow gear!! (I'm a city girl and I've never shot a bow so I was immediately impressed. Upon entrance you're asked to sign a waiver and read the safety guidelines which all make more sense once you get started. Next I was asked about my dominant hand and eye. The guide/trainer was super helpful, very encouraging and helped us get all set up. My friend and I throughly enjoyed our time and with the experience package also got to choose a can of pop. I'm definitely planning to come back with more friends and hang out at average joes. It was awesome trying to channel my inner Katniss, Robin Hood, Hawkeye!! We had reserved two hours this past weekend to introduce a group of (7) kids (ages 10-12) to archery. We thought we were going to be given instruction and supervision throughout our visit, but unfortunately we were not. I have been here a couple of times now and it's always fun! From time to time they do run archery experiences specials via Groupon and Livingsocial. The specials include equipment rental, 2 hours of shooting time and sodas for two people. I have been taking different groups of friends to try and they all love it! Located in Coon Rapids and they have a private parking lot which is a plus! They also have a shop where you can purchase archery equipment and accessories. They also have classes you can take to help improve your archery skills. They do have a party room to rent out if you like. It's an indoor range which is nice when it's winter time and you can still have fun and stay warm. Staff is awesome. Great shooting archery shooting range in coon rapids. It is never crowded. The staff more than helpful on the merchandise in the store and to give tips on shooting archery. They routinely run Groupon, living social and other offers. I came here three times with Groupon and once with living social. They do have a techno hunt which is shooting plastic arrows into a projector screen that is also fun since you get different environments and mimics a moving object.. Very similar to big buck hunter. The price here is quite cheap for what you get. There is a free large parking lot as well. You typically get a free drink or snack with your package as well. Highly recommend checking out! All the equipment is included but also have more to purchase if you take the sport more seriously. They have bows, arrows and other hunting gear like arrow tips etc. read more

My wife set this up for us as an anniversary present. The Groupon advertised they would utilize social distancing and masks. For reference, we are an interracial couple. Our initial interaction set us off on an uneasy start. The group that was in front of us in line were treated respectfully and kindly. When we approached, the staff treated us as though we were an inconvenience, and struggled to look my wife or I in the eye. The instructor stood very close with no mask on, even though he didn't need to take the mask off his face. He didn't really bother telling us too much, and when i followed up with a question, he didn't care to give me a deeper explanation than the value instructions he had given before. They stuck us only a single row over from a group of three individuals. Definitely not 6 feet of space away, despite having approximately 5-7 other spaces away from other people. At least the shooting was fun; we have had to make the best of these situations from our experience in the south. After the first hour of archers staring at us, and the staff acclimating to our presence the tension seemed to ease. From the constant staring of the locals, Coon Rapids doesn't seem like a safe place for POCs or interracial couples (we are black/white). While we understood that keeping a mask on with a bow could be a hazard, there was no reason for our instructor to stand so close with no mask on when he didn't need to demonstrate anything. We definitely received strong racist vibes, and won't be going back. It is a shame to think that twenty minutes outside the Twin Cities, we encountered this level of negative vibes. read more

Joe should give himself a little more credit... how about "A Little Above Average Joe's" or "Joe's - We Don't Suck!"? Because this place offers activities outside of the norm in a fun, casual setting. Also, from what I heard, Joe is a full-time badass, as he is a firefighter in addition to owning a business focused around weaponry. Again, not so average. I took my boyfriend here to celebrate his Dirty Thirty. A surprise party would be his living nightmare, but shooting things is a dream come true. So when I found this place, which is about 10mins from our house, I knew I had to make a reso and practice hitting vitals together. I'm a hopeless romantic! Speaking of resos - I advise calling ahead and making some as they are very busy lately due to groupons and specials. Joe was not there (too busy saving lives, sorry), but a really awesome older gentleman showed us the ropes. I don't remember his name but I do remember his birthday is coming up ha. He gave us ample instruction and was available for any questions and requests. We started by shooting arrows at the paper targets... and turns out I'm a killing MACHINE. I'm exaggerating (a little!) of course, but you might as well just try to stay on my good side... We did a "TechnoHunt" session for an additional $15 for two. My boyfriend really enjoyed this. You use the same bow you practiced with and just switch to non-pointed arrows and shoot at moving images on a screen. You rack up points according to your hit. There are soooo many scenes to choose from, and you can also add elements like wind. 4 out of 5 stars because some updates in the place could do them good. And the software of Technohunt was pretty slow, especially with transitioning between scenes. But I had a good time and would like to go back realllll soon! read more

Average Joes is a great shop. I'm a new bow hunter so the help I've received here has been invaluable! From getting my draw length set correctly, installing a peep and anchor point on the string, helping me get my stance correct and sighting in my 10/20/30 yard pins. Recently I was having trouble with my 20 yard accuracy so I set up a lesson with Joe (one of the 2 there I believe), and we discovered that it wasn't me doing something wrong but instead my arrow rest dragging against a fletching - Joe got me set up with an old drop-away rest of his for cheap and helped me re-sight my aim - suddenly I was 100% accurate at 20 yards! My bow is old AF (basically my cousin-in-law's bow from his teenage years) so Joe had me shoot a couple new bows for fun so I could feel the difference and get an idea of what kind of bow I'll want when I'm ready to get my own (which is very soon at this rate). They also have an indoor range which is usually where most of the action is happening. There's generally 6 or so spots at 10 yards, another 6 at 20 yards, and then 4 or so at the end for 30 and I think all the way out to 40. There's bar style seating for people to watch (they do leagues here also) and a fridge with sodas and waters, etc. There's all types of folks at the range, from target shooters with those crazy long stabilizers, to hunters like myself getting ready for whatever the upcoming season is, kids who are way better than me, first time shooters, etc.. There are regulars who I've spoken to a couple times and everyone is nice and welcoming, as are all the staff I've met! read more

We went here on a Groupon and I wasn't sure what to expect. My husband and I have both been interested in archery but we're intimidated by the sport. We immediately felt at ease when we got there. Shane greeted us and set us up with a bow and lanes. He went through range safety, and he gave us a small lesson on shooting the bows. I was worried that we would be judged, but the regulars there talked to us and answered our (annoying) questions. We browsed the shop after our range time and Joe was nice enough to answer all our inquiries about the products. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to try archery at minimal cost. We will be returning soon! read more

Average Joe's is a complete archery store for hunters and hobbyists alike, and also a fun indoor shooting range. My wife and I showed up for the "Archery Experience" package and warmly welcomed by the staff, even though neither of us had shot a bow and arrow in decades. Our instructor patiently taught us the rules of the range and gave us plenty of useful pointers on how to aim and shoot. Even on a busy day, the staff at Average Joe's are very relaxed, and we never felt rushed to finish our range time. In fact, I'm pretty sure walked away long before anyone suggested our time was up. I love this place. This is the second archery range I explored after recently picking up the sport. It was a breath of fresh air--the other place just wanted to sell me products, all they saw was a novice to take advantage of (and felt really condescending)--Average Joe's on the other hand was VERY helpful in teaching me about archery. The indoor shooting space is huge--and you actually have a little wiggle room from side-to-side with other shooters (when I was at the other archery place I felt like a spoon stacked on another spoon!). The shooting distances differ greatly too--I don't think a lot of indoor ranges offer that. I ended up joining an archery league here for a winter. I can't wait to go back! read more

My Girlfriend and I went to average joe's today and shot some arrows. It was a lot of fun and they were pretty easy going and were very helpful. They sized our bows for us and gave us the options of different bows. what surprised me was that the bows were high quality. Or at least seemed to be (I'm a newbee). The arrows of course have been through some use but that's the same as range balls in golf (unavoidable). I highly recommend Average Joe's for your dates. Well that was fun! We arrived a couple minutes before noon for our two hour range time along with 30 minute digital hunting experience. My boyfriend and I haven't done archery since summer camp in the 90's and my how bows have changed! Anyway, Michelle was extremely helpful and not intimidating at all despite our extreme beginner status. She grabbed us a couple bows and we looked at the range hoping we would be placed at the end of the row instead of smack dab in the middle of these pre-teens that already knew what they were doing. What I appreciated was never feeling like we were being snickered at or made fun of each time my arrow would ping of the top of the target. The digital hunting experience was really fun but I'm very convinced that my targets were more difficult than his...or so it seemed. read more

After searching for a couple days and scoping out my archery range choices, I decided to try out Average Joe's Archery for my refresh into archery. To begin with I want to say they were completely helpful on the phone when I called to make the appointment and after speaking with David for a while he suggested that I wouldn't even need the whole private lesson from my past experience. Then I called to tell them I would be late due to horrible traffic; they responded understandingly and said it's fine and just get there when I can. When I finally got out of traffic and arrived, they greeted me warmly and made me feel at home. I started on a trigger release, which he gave me the option to try and i took it, but after a few shots I didn't like it so I switched to a regular compound bow. I fell in love with the bow and wanted one in purple so I ordered one and should be there Tuesday or Wednesday. In all I would say this was one amazing experience and the people at Average Joe's Archery are incredible helpful and are very good at what they do. I bought my very first bow at a pawn shop to go on an archery deer hunt. I liked it enough to buy my second bow online. I wanted something a little different than everyone else so I bought a Martin. ($400) I was still very new to archery and bow hunting so I wasn't going to break the bank. Average joes was then my shop. I was a paying customer and was there almost once a week to shoot targets. The guy working the front desk said out loud in front of me how much he hated my bow and how crappy my bow was. Every single time! He treated me like a second class citizen because he didn't like my bow. This was my first serious year of archery and this was how the "archery community" was treating me. Then, He did it again, for no reason, i was standing at the front counter and he turns to his co worker and says "I hate that bow" loud enough for me to hear. I was standing right there. I was so pissed I never went back again. Everyone there looked down on me for being new to the sport. That bow shot just fine, it was fast light and accurate. Nothing wrong with it. After a successful hunting season I was absolutely hooked. I moved on to Bwana Archery where they gave me top dollar on a trade in for my Martin and gave me a great deal on a BRAND NEW Prime. I spent $1500 at Bwana on new gear and they have been nothing but helpful and supportive. I now buy everything from Bwana in Little Canada and my experience there has been has been amazing. read more

A lot of fun for the whole family! If you're thinking about one of those 2 hour coupons, do it! You do not need to have any experience to shoot here. Staff is very helpful, especially with beginners. We've been a few times and will go again for sure. Two things I think they could improve are to have more of the advanced bows for folks that have moved beyond the basic but don't want to invest in a bow themselves, and more consistency in the safety talk/initiation. Today we did the archery experience with my boys and two of my nephews (ages 7, 9, 9, and 14). Amazing experience. Staff was fabulous and helped teach safety rules and technique. We had planned to go to Top Golf this week over break, but they want to go back and do more archery.
