Our two boys have been attending classes for about 2 years now. What we love about Bruce McCorry's…read moreis the family atmosphere, and the very high instructor to student ratio. The turnover of both students and instructors is very low, so it feels like a family rather than a YMCA class or town sports team. It's not uncommon to see six instructors even on a slow day with 10 kids, and the instructors are long-time veterans, many in the school since they were kids. Our kids love the physical games they play, the wide variety of snacks they provide, and they always have a smile when they're training. Both kids also love the summer program, lots of field trips and fun physical games, and having training every day really advanced their skill level. With martial arts the number of choices of schools can be overwhelming, but we feel Bruce McCorry's is the best combination of family feel, fun, but also discipline - the kids are very well behaved, they run a tight ship, and don't allow fooling around. Our six year old talks about one day joining the demo team and being an instructor. It's the kind of place your kids will want to be a part of for many years to come.

As a direct result of my time there, I eventually moved to Japan for years to continue martial arts training, and have dedicated my life to martial arts, now teaching at my own Dojo in Los Angeles. I can't believe how much I owe to my experience at Shodokan. Thank you for being such a wonderful influence. Thank you for being such a great inspiration. I hope many more people will have the opportunity to be a part of your Dojo.

New students go through a two month intro class that will allow them to join regular classes with more confidence and a good understanding of the basics of Aikido. The intro class is taught by the school's senior instructor, Sensei Mulligan, who was designated as "Shihan" or Master Teacher from Aikido World Headquarters in 2010. He has trained and inspired many students but what makes the Shodokan a special martial arts school is the energy and sense of humor from Mr. Mulligan and the teachers and students. The school also offers Judo, Karate and other arts, with instructors and students cross training in different arts. Visitors are welcome to come by and sit during class, so if you're interested, come by and check it out! At first she didn't know if she liked it, but she stayed with on and stayed on a path that continued for 7 years and she ended it after receiving a junior Black Belt. Dennis, Jess, Alan and the rest of the staff there instill values, discipline, and pride in the kids. They are remarkable teachers who do not take short cuts and their dedication reflects on the students that they lead. In the end, my daughter could have continued on her path but she chose to do other activities once she completed the 2 year junior Black Belt path that they laid out for her. Aside from the phenomenal classes they offer, they go above and beyond with outside activities and events. Every year they deck out the studios and make a haunted maze for Halloween, and they have a great holiday party. Summer there were kickball games, cookouts, etc. They really make it a community and a family there, I cannot recommend a better place to take your kids for a great physical activity and a great structural place to instill great values and discipline in your kids. Aside from that, they offer teen and adult classes. Over the many years I sat in the studios as my daughter took her classes, I saw a lot of people pass through the doors on their own journeys. Some people may have not gone for awhile, and they might get a gentle nudge or ribbing as to why they have not been there in awhile. All in all, great place. Very affordable and well worth the money and time.

When I got there for the first class, I realized that i'd already been to a couple of seminars he'd put on in Everett. Coach Jeff Burger is quite an interesting guy. He's trained extensively in a number of martial arts and has been a coach/martial arts trainer for most of his life. So, I had a groupon for 10 classes. Despite having trained for years, he wanted me to start in his level 1 classes. I could appreciate this. He had a system and I felt like it was respectful to his system and the other students. And it also helped me to get a feel for how he teaches and both level 1 and 2. My prior experience was in a muay thai school that was focused on traditional muay thai, as a sport. The classes included good teaching as well as were good workouts - cardio-wise. With CJB, he believes in "burn and learn", where you start with jump roping and a few rounds of pad work with each other, then learn different themes. So to start with, you learn how to do pad work - both hitting and holding. Which is good. Then the teaching. CJB is well-versed in numerous martial arts. When he teaches muay thai, he teaches only muay thai. He focuses on muay thai as it pertains to the sport, as well as self-defense, in police work, and in military work. So it's cool to learn ways of using muay thai for true self defense in addition to as a sport. And he has a systematic way of looking at martial arts and teaching it. He is also really good at explaining the origins of moves as well as the reasoning behind them - which I found helpful, a thorough understanding of why always helps me to really learn how to use something. His classes are small and he teaches all of them. So you get a lot of attention from him directly, which is really cool. As opposed to other places with big classes where the main teacher is a high-ranking student, you have the direct teaching from CJB himself. Which is great. It's definitely not a cardio-based class. The focus is on teaching and CJB is a great teacher. The other students are all nice and it's very comfortable.

I met coach Jeff burger through a friend of mine a number of years back. Over the years I have had the pleasure and good fortune to become friends with, train with and attend his seminars. He is a wealth of information. His teaching methods and content is always practical, methodical and very clear. This guy is the real deal!
