YES! Do visit the Louvre if you are in Paris. Best thing to do.
Ok, so I didn't need to read about it on Yelp to know to come to the Louvre. Read to buy ticket in advance on Yelp at another place. WRONG! The full price ticket for all exhibits (Permanent and temporary) is 15 Euros. The remote places get 35 euros. I assume it's a service charge. Then you have to find the other place and pick up your paper ticket. So forget it.
Just go to the museum and buy your ticket. Get there early. I waited in line for about 5 minutes at 9:30am on a Sunday holiday weekend.
I have been lucky enough to visit many of the world's great big city museums while traveling on business. I only speak English, but normally that's not a problem. If my first ex-wife isn't with me (An artist) I always rent the voice guided head set every museum has. It's great commentary that you can't get without an expert. (I'm an engineer.)
The Louvre is wonderful and I was in awe. It is huge. I made the mistake of coming to Paris and skipping it the first few times for other iconic places to visit. It should be bear the top of your list. The buildings that house the exhibits are worth it alone.
I immediately went to see the Mona Lisa and the Venus. The headset (5 Euros) is worth it and makes it easy to find. Amazing.
Now why I give it three stars. The headset works with a GPS for your location and starts talking when you get close to a covered exhibit. Or you can put in a code number that is listed at some artworks and hear more. Of course there are audio stories for the Venus and the Mona Lisa. But I estimate there are for about 5% of the others. Come on! What do the curators do all day? And what happens with the hundreds or thousands of rental fees they get from the audio recorders every day? There should be audio recordings for almost every piece. In Amsterdam there is. In addition all of the written explanation at each exhibit is only in French. Shame on you. How about Chinese? Or Japanese. Lots of those guys round. Or maybe the language of business round the world, English. I know the French are proud of their language, but this IS the Louvre. It's not just French any more. I do give them some credit. The newest exhibit (Islamic History) has multi lingual signs. How about fixing the rest? read more
