Auberge Du Lac is a large restaurant converted from the old railway houses in the small village of Chandon in rural Southern Burgundy. It has been run by the same family for over one hundred years and serves very traditional French food and rustic wine in unlabeled bottles. This is French cuisine as it should be - large portions, rustic but attractive in appearance and full of flavour. Its easy to imagine that these dishes have been passed down from generation to generation.
We were a large group of 11 people so were not provided with a full menu, simply a choice of vegetarian or not! However, sometimes this is the easiest way as you know you are getting dishes recommended by the house.
Delicious bread was placed on the table to start - still warm, fresh out of the oven. A perfect combination of crispy crust and soft centre. I could have filled up on bread alone! However, starters were soon delivered. Pate for the meat-eaters and crudites for the veggies. Both were substantial portions with salad, pickles and salami accompanying the two large slices of course pate. Yum.
I went for the seafood mouse for main course. This was full of flavour, particularly in the rich sauce that was served as an accompaniment. Along side this was Dauphinoise potatoes with a cheesy topping. All delish!
Dessert was French apple tart served with cream, ice cream and custard - why be made to chose when you can have all three?!
Staff were very friendly and helpful and we were lucky enough to have a French speaker in the group which is particularly useful. read more
