I found Scott through his many wonderful Yelp reviews; getting to work with him was truly a gift - a God-send even. I am Co-VP of a non-profit and we needed what we thought was a fairly simple document that our members could sign when receiving the micro grants we give out. One attorney prior to Scott said she would draft this simple agreement for us as a favor to one of our members - we had a good 6 weeks prior to the members' meeting (time when they'd receive their micro grant checks) then, the day before the deadline, she said she was too busy and wouldn't be able to meet the deadline, nor would deliver it at a later date. I reached out to another attorney, who was also too busy to draft what he said should be a simple agreement, but he seemed to also over-complicate it... He told me to call the LA Bar association for a referral, which I did but that was not as helpful. I got to Yelp, called Scott who picked up right away, he was very personable immediately + he was very understanding of the fact that our 501(c)(3) does not have a massive budget, he had a draft to us in no-time. I only had a couple of questions and he immediately got on the phone and spent well over a half hour to make sure I understood everything regarding those questions, he added some final tweaks to the document and thanks to the beautiful agreement he drafted, now our members have received their micro-grants. I commended to him on how knowledgeable he is and on expressed my gratitude for his high work ethics and he confessed that he was really upset to hear that another attorney would not honor their deadline with us, leaving us hanging. He truly went above and beyond - he was fair, has high integrity, did not over complicate anything, and was super responsive. While we hope to never need any legal services again, we now certainly know who to turn to should we be in need. Tom was very difficult to reach when there was disagreement. He's a mediator who doesn't like to mediate. He just wants to do paperwork. But he didn't even do that until he was fired. l I terminated services and asked for a refund. 3 days later he set an email with paperwork and said there would be no reimbursement because he'd done the work he'd been hired for. REALLY!!!??? If you want someone to take your money, avoid you, and procrastinate on doing the work he was hired for, hire Tom. read more

Wished I'd read the second reviewer before I went to Hicks for my dissolution. He charged me a ton of money to do an uncontested divorce. Then he refused to refund my $220 more when his secretary gave out unsound legal advice about doing a stipulation to reverse the dissolution after the judge had already signed the judgment. Really shoddy, unprofessional conduct. Save yourself the money and aggravation--either do it yourself (if it's uncontested) or pay for a lawyer. You get what you pay for. read more

Tom Hicks, owner and operator of the paralegal service Attorney Alternative has been doing this business a long time, unfortunately probably too long. I think he is semi-retired but won't admit it. I have used his services on at least 5 or 6 different occassions and he has always been slow, rarely if ever returns phone calls but will usually answer you via e-mail a day later and sometimes not even then. He is never in the office in the morning. On this last occassion he did not file my paperwork for an eviction as I requested and it cost me about a month of lost time in the eviction process. My advice is to try someone else. I know I will. read more

I am retracting my review of 4/11/2014!!!!!! I have been innvolved involved with a Probate Court in AZ and a probate Atty in Safford, AZ who stated that the Special needs Trust I had from Mr. Hicks was not legal and did not protect or help my Son for whom it was written. I had tried to contact Mr Hicks to talk with him about this "new information" however, we missed connection and out of complete frustration and ignorance (being told false info) I wrote a bad review. Now that I have spoken with Mr. Hicks I now understand that it was the AZ Atty who was giving me false infomation and no doubt hoping to re-write the Special Needs Trust and add more to an already high fee for probate. Please know that I not only recommend Mr. Hicks at Affordable Attorney Alternative but wil rely on his expertise to make changes to my trust as needed and to listen to his counsel. I had the exact same experience that I see others complaining about. It took Tom almost two years to get absolutely nothing done. My divorce was simple. I filed and my x never responded. It was cut and dry but Tom submitted paperwork incorrectly a handful of times. He continued to submit the exact same paperwork that had been rejected. He finds every reason to blame others for his mistakes and his failure to follow through with his promises. Tom can reply to customer reviews on here all he wants by claiming he's not difficult to get a hold of but the truth is, that he's extremely difficult to reach. People don't complain about the exact same issue if it weren't true. I don't understand how he's still in business. If I had the time I'd report him and take him to court to get my money back. I'm positive there's more unsatisfied customers but people just don't take the time to write a review. I would be more than happy to show proof of his lack of service. Message me and I'll be happy to help. My best advice is to go to a free workshop if you need assistance filling out paperwork.
