I hope you're never greeted the way you did to me when you visit a hospital. It shouldn't be hard to smile and be kind. 2 stars for the security staff next to her for being nice and greeting me.

My daughter has her 1st child at Atrium Union West in March. She loved her OB/GYN (Dr…read moreKenton-Haney) but her birthing experience was very traumatic, drawn out and difficult, to put it mildly. Due to complications, she was induced 3 weeks early. Check-in was Wednesday. The baby was not delivered until Friday. She had to go through 2 days of "procedures" medicines, balls, etc. to induce delivery. Long and drawn out. She was dilated and began pushing Friday am. Her Dr had to leave, however, so at this point Dr Ashley Cole took over. IF ONLY SOMEONE HAS WARNED US! So, I hope to warn others! In our opinion, Dr Cole is the perfect example of what a Dr looks like with they may be very skilled technically, but have no care, nurture, or bedside manner. Not to mention she has such an egotistical and arrogant attitude, topped with a harsh and abrasive tone in her treatment. The way she spoke to her patient, who was exhausted, scared, tired, in severe pain because of 4 failed epidural attempts, .... Was deplorable!! I now know why she does not see patients and that needs to stay that way. I am not sure that leaving vulnerable women in labor, in her hands, is any better of a solution however, if that was why that decision was made. Thank God the nurse working that day was there and able to step in and explain options, help with breathing and help to be a calming and supportive voice. The nurse explained the vacuum process vs the Forceps process. We decided to try the vacuum because I could see my daughter was exhausted, and in distress. My daughter even said at one point "Why is she talking to me like that?", referring to Dr Cole. It was heartbreaking to watch as a parent. My daughter also experienced a level 2 tear in the delivery process as well, Dr Cole did do an excellent job on the stitching to repair the tear... so I give her that. Next dismissive & disrespectful act... (yes, there is more), dad was there to cut the cord. But Dr Cole just cut it and passed the baby on. This once again, caused trauma, and made us to think that something was wrong, since we had informed the nurse that dad would cut the cord when they asked. Another dismissive and disrespectful act by Dr Cole. Pros: * Prenatal Appointments at West were good and facilities are nice. * Dr Kenton-Haney is a great Ob/Gyn and has a wonderful personality (Highly recommend at a different location for birthing) * West has Beautiful Hospital Grounds (but do not recommend you go here) * Some of the Nurses were great (but only a few) Cons: * Failed epidural that took 4 tries (while in Labor pain) due to lack of skill and correct tubing, and it still did not work at all! * Facility not equipped with needed medical equipment (or tubing) apparently * Severe back pains after Epidural on top of the contractions and delivery pains * The hospital was not equipped for any escalations. Baby transferred to Pineville NicU for a low temperature due to lack of proper assessment equipment. * Most Horrible, belittling, disrespectful treatment by attending Dr (Ashley Cole) * Dr Cole was very disrespectful in so many ways * Dr Cole was very dismissive of my daughters pain, several...dismissive and disrespectful actions * Dr Cole cut umbilical cord when father was right there * Main Atrium hospital location in Union is very old, dank and needs updating. In summary, I do NOT recommend having a baby at Union West. The main Union location is very old, dank and needs updating, but West has Dr Cole, and you want to avoid her at all costs! I am a firm believer in being fair and showing some grace. But Dr Cole showed none to my daughter. She really needs some serious personality / bedside manner intervention. You should not be a Dr if you do not care about people! You should not deliver babies if you do not like to do so, or care for the women delivering them! Whatever her issue is, it caused trauma and what should have been a maybe difficult but yet beautiful experience, was a traumatic, painful and a disrespected one instead.

To those ladies, sometimes it isn't necessarily WHAT you say, but HOW you say it.... showing a little grace would go A Long Way (if you knew the Lord), but... based on the way you act, you both apparently, DO NOT! Fine, but you can at least be Professional seeing as how you are AT WORK, "working" for a company, that YOU are the face of when people arrive, and they sign your Paychecks! Just Saying. I would also like to agree with a previous reviewer and say that you should not treat patients as "drug seekers" when they have an actual need for pain medication for a serious condition that they are suffering through, NOT Okay! But, most doctors these days do, with any and all narcotic medications. It's really sad that because some people, whom ARE drug addicts, they are ruining for others who in fact, have a real need! :(

I never received any IV pain meds for my 8-10/10 pain throughout the night (no I am not an opioid seeker, I just had a major surgery and these people are clueless). Not only did they not give me any IV pain meds, but they also directly told me "NO" when I questioned the night staff as to why my orders were not filled. So apparently it is within hospital policy to leave a post-surgery patient in the most severe pain of their life, deny IV pain medication orders from the surgeon, and then charge them for an overnight stay, after failing to deliver anything close to decent care They also ran Normal Saline on me all night as a maintenance fluids, this is not a maintenance fluid. D5 + 1/2 NS + 20-40 mEq of KCl is a maintenance fluid. Unfortunately, their incompetent staff did not know this, and ended up raising my serum Na so high I ended up with a massive headache from the pressure difference between my brain and the rest of my body's sodium concentration. To make matters even worse, they gave me IV cefazolin all night. There is absolutely no indication for IV cefazolin once a healthy, person leaves the OR....but I got billed for that too. Atrium health 100% fumbled the ball once my care was transitioned to them, and then pursued illegal billing actions against me, in attempt to circumvent financial assistance law's put in place by the Obama administration with IRS tax code 501(r). Prior to my surgery on 7/5/17 I spoke with Anne Wingate about my expected surgical costs. The surgery cost over $69,000, and my expected out of pocket expense was $4,200+. At that time I could not make a down payment that they requested, and I asked for financial assistance. Somehow from that date forward there is no note or any record of me calling until 5/31/18 (my Verizon records show otherwise). May 31 is my birthday, and I called Atrium health to once again, ask for financial assistance ON MY 28TH BIRTHDAY because these clowns had been busting my balls that hard and for that long. They then finally sent me a financial assistance packet, but it was 8 months post surgery. I did not meet their 6 month paperwork deadline, they claimed, and my financial assistance was denied and I was once again, turned over to collections. However, this is 100% in violation of IRS statute 501(r) that applies to 503(c) non-profit (tax-exempt) hospitals. It is illegal to deny a patient access to financial assistance paperwork and then pursue extreme collections actions against them. I HIGHLY SUGGEST THAT NOBODY EVER PURSUE ANY TYPE OF CARE THROUGH ATRIUM HEALTH. THIS PLACE IS IN ABSOLUTE SHAMBLES, AND I AM TELLING YOU THIS AS SOMEONE WHO EXPERIENCED IT FIRST HAND AND IS NOW A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL. THESE PEOPLE ARE ABSOLUTE CLOWNS, THEY HAVE 0 CARE ABOUT THEIR PATIENT'S BEST INTERESTS AND THEY WILL DO UNETHICAL AND ILLEGAL THINGS TO FORCE YOU INTO PAYMENT!
