My wife and I chose Atria to care for her 101 year old mother two years ago. For a majority of this time, she was independent and we had few issues. However, she recently sustained a fall and fractured her tibia requiring a higher level of care. We were dismayed that staffing shortages at this facility required her to wait for prolonged periods of time for basic care which made her anxious, disappointed and sad. This prompted us to look for other local alternatives and we visited Vivante at Newport Center. They happened to have a special rate for the smaller units which ended up costing us only $700 more per month. However, the differences in the caregivers was astounding. Everyone took special measures to ensure they understood her needs and couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating. In addition, the room was considerably more spacious, has an elegant full kitchen (as opposed to a kitchenette with a microwave) and the food and restaurant is not even comparable. We have met several residents who also moved from Atria to Vivante but never the reverse. When my wife wrote a heartfelt letter about the incompetence of some of the staff to the Senior Executive Director of Atria, Mr. Brian Keys, he never even responded. Does this represent the priorities of their leadership? In all fairness, there are employees at Atria that are caring and competent. But even at the standard rent and level of care, the relatively nominal upgrade price is the bargain of a lifetime. read more

Atria is a gorgeous establishment that feels more like a high-end, family-run resort than an assisted living facility. The staff is warm, knowledgeable, and considerate. My grandma transitioned from the previous management to the opening of this new building and Atria included residents' opinions in many aspects of the planning and operation before the move and they continue to do so to this day. Residents are invited to meet about the activities, food, and many are Welcome Ambassadors themselves. Understandably, many seniors struggle with losing aspects of their independence (I know I will, when the time comes) and it means so much to me that all of the staff sincerely listens to the opinions and needs of the residents. It's clear that each staff member values residents and knows they are our beloved family members. My grandma just celebrated her 100th birthday this month at Atria with great fanfare and love from the residents, staff, and our family and friends. In her words, Grandma said it was "the most fantastic party" she's ever had. It was a beautiful evening and I am so thankful to Lyn and James for making it a night to remember! The accommodations are impressively modern, yet comfortable, and I feel reassured that residents can ask for help at any time with their wristbands. Grandma and I love having lunch on the sunny terrace. The options for activities are endless! Grandma has learned a number of new games (mahjong, chess, rummikub), enjoyed live music and performances, made many beautiful crafts to decorate her room, learned a lot from live lectures, and enjoys red vines in the movie theater. She is also an active member of the bookclub and we often exchange books that we are reading. As my grandma's needs have increased, her support from staff has evolved as well. Every single staff member I have met knows my grandma by name and they are all welcoming to me, too. My mother has lived here two years in the EAST building. This was her first transition into assisted living and the staff was very good at adjusting her to receiving care and the emotional and physical changes of assisted living. We had nothing to compare Newport to so this seemed great at the time. They do bake fresh cookies around the clock.. :) We will miss some staff and residents in Newport BUT we are moving my mother to a much better facility. The facility has quickly been turning in a direction that is not worth the money we pay and costs seem to be always going up. (we pay approx. $4300mo for a studio w/ care) My mother has been accessed by a nurse by their point system which we felt was too high and we were paying for services she did not receive. She was assessed by an outside doctor and two nurses recently and was assessed 3 points lower (a monthly $1000. savings). To be fair, assessments can vary depending on the resident and their abilities which can change. At the time of her move in she was weak and needed more care but within 6 months gained strength, confidence and comfort with the care givers and became easier to manage but was NOT re-evaluated even after 2 years. We were told when moving in that she most likely would gain confidence & strength which would lower her points saving us money buy was never the case. The food & environment is hospital like, often the facility seems under staffed. Staff seems to complain often about their job and treatment by management to residents. The room housekeeping is poor. The facility is older and needs remodeling desperately. I noticed mold in her bathroom under her flooring. My mother who needs toiletry needs and feeding was left on the toilet and forgotten about for an hour which was degrading for her. Often she is left at meal times with a cold plate of food unable to feed herself and waiting for assistance. We did look at The Vintage in Mission Viejo and the staff seemed friendlier right off the bat, the facility has new construction and a grand entrance. Their chef won Chef of the year. The grounds are much nicer. There is no comparison to the rooms between the two facilities. All rooms come with a kitchenette & microwave which Newport does not. Mission Viejo offers air conditioning which Newport does not. The air circulation in Newport isn't great...even though you are close to the ocean it's not helping the scent & odors that occur in assisted living facilities. This facility is over priced and often over looked in my opinion. It was helpful at the time but we are graduating. read more

I've experienced other assisted living facilities while helping friends and family select a place to live. Newport Terrace far exceeds the care and comforts that I've seen elsewhere. The staff are exceptionally caring and attentive. After helping a friend move there that was very happy, another friend asked me for a referral for a family member and I gave her a 5 star recommendation for Newport Terrace. Her cousin has settled in nicely and is happy with the activities and not having to worry about cooking and cleaning. I am currently faced with finding a senior living facility for my parents who live in Florida. After working so closely with the Asst'd Executive Director, George Gonzales, Geniah Sweeney, and Nursing Director Kathleen, I have deep respect for the staff there and how diligently they work to provide a safe, friendly and caring environment for their residents. You guessed it....I'm moving my parents into Newport Terrace. I wouldn't trust any place else with their well being! read more

I can't speak for any of the other families posting here but I can say... Why in the world would you keep your loved one here if they were being treated so horribly? Here's my story with The Vintage. It'll be a year in August since we moved Grandpa in. In this past year, our rent hasn't increased. Although he will be reassessed in August so not sure how that will go. Even if the price does go up, I can say that in our case (our loved one requires a lot of care) it's fair and entirely worth it. The first couple of months were difficult for our Grandpa. He wouldn't even leave his apartment for meals. Vintage was happy to deliver meals to his apartment (for a fee) but always encouraged him to get out of his apartment for fresh air and meals. Eventually, we were successful and he now enjoys three meals a day in the beautiful dining room. We often visit for the Sunday brunch for a reasonable price. My point is this, did we pay for the added service? Of course. What we weren't charged for was the encouragement and warmth of the staff. Furthermore, Grandpa now enjoys weekly entertainment at the Friday Happy Hour, he goes on walks with the walking club, joins in on outings during the week, and most importantly he's no longer isolated. I used to call to check in on him daily. If I didn't call, id receive multiple calls from him asking when id be visiting. Now it seems he's so preoccupied I can get by a day or two without calling or popping in. I can say in my case, we are BLESSED to have discovered Vintage Newport. I feel it is just the place for Grandpa to live out the remainder of his days. read more

Our mother has been at Newport Terrace For a number of years. She recently needed To move to a different room in the Facility. The new Assistant Manager, George, went above and beyond in assisting my mother and our family with this move and transition For our mother. He even helped with the moving of furniture on the actual day of the move, and helped to coordinate any Care changes with the RN, Kathleen. Our mother and father in law moved into Newport Terrace in May 2018 and unfortunately, dad passed away a short while later leaving mom. They'd been married almost 65 years when he passed and so mom was devastated. She also has memory issues. We were so happy with how much all the staff at Newport Terrace rallied behind her to make her feel at home and also to make us feel confident that she was in good hands. The activities were fun for her and there was always someone to talk to and there was always something happening whether a nature walk or a scenic drive along the beautiful Southern California coastline. Bingo, movie night, happy hours and lots of comraderie made up her days there. The food is magnificent; the chef was classically trained and had been the chef at the Broadmore in Colorado Springs. The med staff was excellent and on top of everything with her meds, care givers like Bea were so kind and gracious. Adon the maintenance man was always helpful and kind. Mary and the ladies in reception were excellent. William was very enthusiastic about creating fun events for the residents. Nikki handles billing and is always available to answer questions in a friendly and helpful way. George is our main contact and is such a help to us in every way. He really went out on a limb to assist us and mom so that she was happy and safe. He seemed to always be available to help us to help mom. I cannot say enough about everybody at Newport Terrace. It really is a great community. The Octoberfest celebration was so fun! An accordionist came and played familiar old songs including the chicken dance and then we all retired to the dining room for a sumptuous feast just for the occasion. My dad suffered a stroke last year leaving him with left side weakness, and a recent fall on his back earlier this year that left him pretty immobile. I live in the Bay Area CA. I had no clue about assisted living facilities in S. CA. I used A Place For Mom to help navigate the million assisted living facilities near Irvine that had great reviews. Newport Terrace Senior Living was one of three places I was given to call after I told them what I was looking for. Tracie was my contact and go to person for all my questions and concerns for the 3.5 weeks my dad was there. Having a family member needing assistance is hard enough on all of us and it's very stressful wondering if you've selected the best place for such care for your loved one. Well, we did. I can't rave enough about this place! Tracie and all the staff were consistently very caring, kind, helpful and supportive. My dad received great care. The staff would ask him, and Tracie would ask me, how it's going for my dad always concerned that he's receiving the best care and that he is comfortable. Any and everything was always handled very quickly. I was/am more than impressed! My dad tends to be critical and had some doubts going in. After over 3 weeks there he must admit they gave him great care with much kindness. Can't recommend this place enough! We looked for a place for mom in SoCal including a few in the LA area and Vintage Newport which we heard about from a friend. Overall, we really liked the feel of the place. It felt cheery and upbeat and the staff was very friendly. Also, the room we chose was sunny and bright and had it's own balcony and considering the price it was the overall best value. Also being right next to Hoag Hospital was a huge help since we need to take her in periodically for checkups etc and all her docs are right there. She's very happy there which is most important. The other residents were friendly as well. So far our experience has been very positive and it's been about 9 months now. read more

Don't bring your love one here , they will appear to have your parent in their best interest to get you to give them your money but as soon as they're living there you will be be ignored, and they won't return a phone call, unless you owe them money, and worst of all the employees will steal from your mother or father and they don't seem to care, they go through there rooms searching for what they call dangerous items and take their belongings. And again they just want to charge you more, for every little thing, it's a very sad situation read more

Vintage Newport Review After only 4 months of moving my 98 year old mother into Vintage Newport-East, we received a 76% care fee increase. Throughout the four months, it was always a struggle to get the care she needed. By the time we got the caregivers familiar with her needs, the part-time college students hired for the summer were off to school and we had to start all over again with a whole new part-time staff. Although most of the caregivers were really nice and worked as hard as they could, they were stretched to their limits. After we received the 76% care increase, the trust for Vintage Newport was gone, and we moved mother out of there as fast as we could and just took the hit on the last month's rent. Because the 60-days' notice was mailed on the 1st and not received until many days later, we had no way to provide the requisite move-out notice prior to the end of the month. We thus had to pay for an extra month even though my mother had moved out. Make sure your parent/s don't need a lot of care, if they do a good board and care home will be better suited for them; place a ceiling on rate increases; and be sure the timing of their notices versus yours doesn't cause you to pay for an extra month. Otherwise, find another place. read more

My mom raved about the food and also they had all the channels (including HBO, Showtime, etc.) Her room was in memory care and it was very big and furnished. We moved my father in law into the Vintage East building last year. He had cancer but was still able to live independantly for quite awhile up until the last few months. We then stepped up care through the Vintage staff without having to move him and then he went directly onto hospice all while staying in the same comfortable room he was accostomed to. I felt the Vintage was the perfect place for him. Clean, quiet, tons of activities if he wanted to do them, friendly neighbors and staff. They even pureed his food for him, as he could not eat solid food. As he started to decline, they stepped up his care and nursing as we went along. I felt the staff was very caring and sweet even when he was not. Nancy, the director of nursing in the East building was very kind and was very good about keeping me up to date on his demeanor and progress and helped us make decsions based on her observations. As with any facillity or business it is important to establish good relations with the staff early and set up expectations and communication channels. As far as finances, I felt this was a very fair priced facility, especially being in Newport Beach. As the care is increased of course the prices go up but we were made aware of this at every step of the way. It is important, to always keep in communication so there are no missteps. It's a busy place but the staff is caring and I feel they truly like their jobs and the residents. I was there a lot and there was always a happy upbeat atmosphere with residents and staff alike. I spoke with many of the residents who had lived there a long time and they all said they really liked it and loved the people there. I think that speaks volumes. They didn't have to tell me that. I never heard a negative thing. My opinion is, in life, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar and if you are treating the staff well, they will treat your loved one well. The Vintage is a wonderful place, nice residents, a sweet hard working staff and nicely priced. read more

I agree w/ Maureen G., Jennifer Y., and Kelly J. W. Vintage is an AWFUL place. Do NOT let your loved one live there! We had the same experience w/ our loved one, who was there for 3 years. She hated it there. She is now dead. There was no dignity or courtesy. Our loved one was called Honey and Sweetie instead of by her name. The food is not fit to eat. Our loved one was supposed to have only pureed food and they ignored the order and gave solid food. The solid food I would not feed to an animal. They rushed meal time and would not help her eat, and our loved one did not get to eat all she wanted. She lost 80 lbs. She was literally skin and bones and no one cared or did anything about it. The room was filthy. There was poop all over the toilet. We asked twice in a 2 hour period to have it cleaned up and it was not cleaned. We provided our loved one w/ special soap, tissues, toothpaste, toothbrush, lotion, electric blanket, comforter, waterproof mattress cover - NONE of it was used. A new mattress was ruined. Our loved one was constantly cold. The bed had only sheets on it. They left her in bed all day, minus the electric blanket to keep her warm. Even though we provided plenty of extra sheets, etc., the bedding was filthy. Clothes, shoes, throw blankets and other small items came up missing. One Christmas, we returned our loved one to Vintage around 8:30 P. M. The front door was locked and we could not get in. We pounded on the door for over 10 minutes before a worker opened the door. The worker was in the small front room to the left of the courtyard watching T. V. and eating cookies w/ her children. Staff ignored signs of declining health. Facility is understaffed. Staff does not appear properly trained in how to care for dementia residents. A prison inmate gets better care. Management, specifically Monica, as well as others, did not return email, phone calls, nor would they meet w/ us in person. When our loved one had to go to the hospital (several times), no one called to let us know or give us status updates. I would pay Sharon, the lady who runs the beauty parlor, in advance (required) for hair and nail services that our loved one did not get. Whenever our loved was hospitalized, we did not receive a refund or credit for any services not rendered. The month our loved one died, we paid for 3 weeks of services she did not get. No refund. DO NOT ALLOW YOUR LOVED ONE TO LIVE IN THIS HORRIBLE PLACE!!!!!!! read more

It is interesting to read the posts below. My grandmother (Oma) has been at Vintage for almost two years now and has never had an issue as far as care or rate increases. I know my Oma was telling me there was some issue in the other building but it did not affect her. This is not to say she has not received increases, she has though they didn't come out of the blue with it they told us she would be reassessed on her care yearly when we signed the contract. The one thing my grandmother would like is more variety in the food served there, LOL but for the money we pay I guess she can be picky! Our overall experience has been a good one. The management staff are very warm and friendly and make my Oma feel comfortable there! Oma is happy and thats what counts! I am surprised these other people have had bad experiences... read more

mom has now been at Vintage for 2 years and I see her weekly - she LOVES it there and never misses Bingo and we love the monthly brunches - I drive 40 miles from LA each week one way to visit and I wish she was closer but I do the drive since the place is so nice and she enjoys it so much !!! read more

My mother-in-law has been here almost two years and it has changed! Used to be friendly and loving, outdated but comfortable. Ever since the beginning of March it has been one big downward spiral. Supposedly they are "going through a transition", I.e. we are flailing around without a clue! First a sweet sales manager left, then shortly after was the chef in charge, then less than a month later the nurse in charge! What the heck?! There seems to never be enough staff to help, and the staff that are there are worn down from working too many consecutive hours and days. The right hand never seems to know what the left is doing and it seems like the residents are suffering. We are now eagerly looking for a new place for mamma. So unbelievably disappointed.... P.S. Convenient how Brian and Kevin are friends...maybe someone asked them to try and help raise the yelp rating? Maybe it shouldn't be so apparent next time... read more

I am grateful the cheap, unethical company running this facility showed its true colors before my mother moved in. We toured it and signed a contract to have her move in two months later with the understanding her $2500 deposit check would be held for a month, since she would not be moving from out of state until then. Not only was the check cashed less than a week later, causing her bank account to accrue charges for being overdrawn until we figured out what had happened, but when I called to demand repayment asap, I was told they would have to investigate and that I would need to wait for repayment. I then called the executive director, who refused to meet with me or to expedite the refund. I was told she does not meet with families- shocking and unacceptable when elderly family members are concerned. I called corporate and never received a call back. I learned later that each "campus" is expected to handle any problems itself. (So why is the Director protected from contact??) When I finally was called back by marketing several days later, I was told that I could pick up the check but that they would not pay for bank fees of over $200 for the overdrawn checks written on her account. We have found a much more people-centered, less institutional assisted living facility, which has an executive director with a big smile and an open-door policy. If this is how they treat people they are presumably trying to impress, how would they have treated my mom after she moved in??? read more
