Hanging out here on a Tuesday night may showcase how relaxing it is compared to a raunchy Thursday night, where only ladies are given a free cocktail to kick off the night. Friday and Saturday nights can get so crowded that people will inadvertently grope each other just to get to the door. Timing is really everything. The bar scene along Wyndham is already competitive enough as it is, so Tonic might serve as a good spot to score a few drinks before moving on. Happy Hour is the best time to enjoy 1/2 off all drinks and it's before the bouncers come rolling in. There is no cover charge either, until later in the night(s) when the place goes from chill to kill (me). Service also falls into the "your mileage may vary" category, as I've encountered some super friendly hostesses and solid bartenders vs DBag bouncers and apathetic managers. They will on certain nights employ a decent DJ, and while the space feels clubby at times, it conflicts with the loungey vibe. Drinks like anywhere along Wyndham are pricey. Thank goodness they take credit card, but don't go overboard with the bottle service either. There are other clubs who handle the scene much better, but then again, Tonic is less of a club and more of a drinking hole for all groups.

Given the quickness of the personal size being delivered and the spotting on the bottom I'm guessing they have a proper high temperature pizza oven and a pizzaiolo. With it's wide interior and open layout, it is an easy option for large groups. The dance floor is solid in the wee hours, even if the DJ isn't always good at revving up the crowd. There is a nice lounge space around the corner from the bar and the front area is perfecting for observing the drunken spirits wandering on Lan Kwai Fong street. The bar itself isn't especially impressive, but it's nothing short of lively, especially on the weekends. On those nights the bar is stacked with bartenders who are furiously mixing drinks left and right. The cocktails lack sophistication (read: slightly watered down) but stick with simple concoctions and the options will fare much better. Prices aren't cheap in this neck of the woods, but that is to be expected in LKF country. I usually end up purchasing enough to merit a spin on their wheel, which will ultimately earn myself or my group a free drink of some kind. While I haven't yet had to pay cover, I have seen some well dressed bouncers at the door lately. I am usually here with good company and less about the drinks / music. The bonuses are the ventilation (which is quite good for a place with open windows) and the lesser tendency of dbaggery. In the end, this place serves as a pseudo after hours destination for many LKF'ers, and for that, Rula Bula is a solid spot to keep the night going.

It started off as a venue to go and meet all you friend groups in the wee hours of the morning. It made sense because of the open spaced design of the place, the good music, and the affordable drinks. Basically the place is a giant square with a bar, some benches and a DJ booth. Half of it is used for sitting/not dancing while the other half is for those that can't hold back from the rhythm of the night. That's a massive advantage in LKF where every other bar is split up into sections the size of a closest interlinked with shoulder-width corridors. I enjoy it there, even if it is a bit on the crowded side, it's easy enough to pop out onto LKF's streets for a bit of "fresh" air. What you may not know about Rula Bula is the fact that it's also a great place to go during the day. By day I mean 5 and onwards. At around this time it's transformed from a sea of bodies, flashing lights and dark corners to a well lit, spacious, bar perfect to hang out at after work with a couple of friends. The giant open windows, the wooden benches, and the overall decor of the place give you the feel that you are on a terrace somewhere - except with a constant stream of taxis driving by. It's the perfect place to lose track of time, a sure sign that Rula Bula is doing something right. If you haven't been to Rula Bula between 5pm and 7pm I'd suggest giving it a visit. You can return later on in the night nothing with full certainty that some you know will be there, slouched in the corner or killing it on the dance floor.

Ventilation during hot months is virtually nonexistent; save for small oscillating fan mounted on the wall. The layout is completely open, which makes this place more of a patio / outdoorsy bar rather than a Tokyo style small cramped quarters kind of drinking hole. More often than not, this place is packed from the outside in. They will have a DJ on any given night with speakers loud enough to encourage folks to dance right along the street. It might not be pretty, but it sure attracts a crowd. Smart format. The drinks leave a lot to be desired. Their "challenge" is NYC esque with the 10 shots for $198 HKD, though having done it a few times it tastes like the shots are watered down and overly sweet. They have specialty shots ranging anywhere from $20-40, suitable for all drinkers from buzz seekers to light sippers. Their jello shooters come in large syringe like vessels in which one injects the jello into the mouth. The gimmick is great but similar to the alcohol situation noted earlier, the jello shots lack some potency. Booze potency. At $45 a pop, they're not a great deal. Drinks are ordered through the counter to the drive thru like window. It's cash only and the staff could stand to be friendlier. Marlin gets a 2.5 stars in my book, but rounding up to 3 stars is more about the hope they get better rather than trashier. Only time will tell.

I found the wait staff to be very attentive and professional. There was some push towards ordering more things but I think it was done in the right way. Overall the food here is good. I wasn't blown away by any one dish but I enjoyed everything I ordered. One fair criticism here is the price. For the portion size the food pricing is really high. Looking at some of the older reviews the price of the food has actually gone up over the years, which to me is crazy. Expect to pay north of a 1200 hkd for a table of two. We ordered 3 small plates, 2 mains, and a dessert. 1) beet root salad (88 hkd) - I love me some beetroot salad. This version had beetroot with a vinaigrette, green onions, and some greens. This is missing some cheese and if there was a nice monchego on top this dish would have been great. 2) Spanish omelette/iberico sobrassada (98hkd) - I see this dish being shared on instagram all the time. They use a Japanese egg which runs out when you cut into the omelette. They suggest eating this with bread to soak up the yolk. I opted not to do this given that the bread isn't free and we are trying to go light on the carbs. I was a bit disappointed with this dish. It tasted good but it wasn't amazing. I probably wouldn't order it again. 3) Onsen egg over potato purée and (158 hkd)- this is really a rich dish and was very delicious. Probably my favorite dish of the evening. It is a special and not on the menu every night. The creaminess from the purée really paired well with the egg and sausage. 4) Iberico pork ribs (208 hkd)- the ribs are slow cooked for 15 hours and it showed. The meat is fall off the bone tender. The dish is paired with peppers and tomatoes. I would have said this dish was excellent if the sauce on the pork was better. However this is still a B+ dish. 5) Spanish Carbinero (268 hkd)- The dish is one large red prawn. The sauce on the prawn is really excellent. However, the meat of the prawn itself wasn't plump indicating that the prawn itself wasn't super fresh. It's also paired with toasted bread squares which make for some good dipping into the sauce. I really don't think it's worth the price and wouldn't order this again. 6) churros (88 hkd) - The churros here are very good. Simple dish but executed really well. Everything that I want from a Churro. Freshly fried, crispy with a nice warm chocolate sauce. You also have a choice of vanilla or chocolate ice cream. I had a glass of wine with my meal and didn't try any cocktails. The bar here is gorgeous and will likely come back again to try the happy hour.
