I first came here only because it's right near my house- I had a Zara blazer that the sleeve had split open on, and they fixed it so you would never know. After that, I had one of my favourite skirts copied (a pleated silk tulip skirt), and they did a great job- the finishing is better than the original. Judy is also not shy to tell you if she thinks you need a few extra cms in the waist or if she thinks what you ask for will be unflattering- and will suggest alternatives (for me, it was pleating at the waistband rather than gathering). I've had 4 more skirts made- two more tulip skirts, a pencil skirt for work and a midi skirt. They really know how to handle delicate fabrics, and they got me in to try them on before hemming all of them- so they hit at the most flattering point. I could never buy pencil skirts before, they'd always gape at the waist and pull at the hips, and the one they made for me (from my measurements, not from an existing skirt) fits perfectly and looks professional. They're in the middle of making me a fitted sheath dress in a checked silk fabric I brought in. When I tried it on today, they'd matched all the checks along the side seams and at the back, and it fit really well. That said, Judy insisted on making sure the neckline was lowered a tiny bit to look even better. I'd recommend them to any women who want tailored work wear- Alice is great at knowing what will be flattering, and the finish on all their work is really high quality. Having lived overseas for 10 years, I faced a problem in selecting a tailoring & alteration business in Sydney's CBD or Inner City to do some delicate alterations on a Paul Smith suit that I had purchased immediately before leaving London. My suit was very expensive & I also needed some alterations done on 2 pairs of woollen trousers. I took a chance - via this very website - on deciding to check out Astor's Tailoring & Alterations at 606 King Street (the St. Peter's end) as I was in the area visiting some friends who live nearby in Marrickville. Upon arrival I met with the proprietor, the amazing and lovely Judy, who has been in the tailoring business for decades. Judy's daughter, Ally, an extremely bright & personable young woman was also on hand to inform, advise & reassure me. I spent around 40 minutes there (by choice) and during that time several loyal customers called into the small terrace shop - they all came to eagerly check the progress of their garments being tailored by Judy or brought their items needing alterations & repairs. It was very pleasantly folksy with allcomers having a happy chat & catching up on local news etc. with Judy and Ally. Bottom line is that my work was done totally professionally. I was 100% pleased with the results & the prices were surprisingly reasonable. I would not go elsewhere for my tailoring & alteration needs and I have absolutely NO hesitation in wholeheartedly recommending Astor's to males or females who seek first rate work and service. Fantastic services of the highest quality. Judy was wonderful to talk to and she is truly a master of her craft. She helped me with my tailored jacket that needed its length adjusted and she managed to alter it in such a fashion that you could not tell any alteration occurred.
