Quite a big college based near the Digbeth area of Birmingham…read more The establishment is well known for it's Centre of Performing Arts and the digital media studios, but outside these disciplines, they also have a lot of other courses that you can choose from. It's a little intimidating when your walking in and there are quite a few young youths hanging outside the main entrance in a mini gang, it puts you off a bit (but I can't imagine that they have much trouble as there is a police station 50 yards away). There is a nice helpful reception area, and just a few minutes walk from the city center. It has very good transport links, is currently enrolling and having friends who have studied a few short courses here comes recommended.

I went to south Birmingham College to drop off a few flyers for an event I'm currently working on…read more It's just before you reach Custard Factory on Floodgate street, just off Digbeth High Street. When you go in you are greeted by a large reception desk which you immediately turn to first. You can't get into the college without signing in at reception and there is security standing near the door. I thought this was really good because it means no one who isn't meant to be there can just wonder in. I was treated with respect and courtesy by the reception lady (unfortunately I've forgot her name) but she was really helpful. At least this time I actually had one of the students I know say they saw some of the flyers I'd left handed out to the students as sometimes this doesn't always happen.

Accessability and location wise the situation is quite good and improving but not quite there yet. For most of the academic year the central facilities (pc labs and library) are generally open from around 7am until 7pm but they are now extending to 24 hour access for some facilities during busy assignment submission periods, which is fantastic for specialist software requirements in otherwise busy labs! Being based a 5 minute walk outside of the city centre is massively convenience compared to Perry Barr campus aswell. I do enjoy the general atmosphere on campus although there is no designated SU watering hole in the vicinity to enjoy a quick social with your course mates and to meet other students without venturing to Perry Barr (city north campus) As a final note there is also the slight annoyance that some labs seem to be overlooked during the summer pc upgrades and as such performance on some machines can be painfully slow but understandably this is due to limitations on both service and financial constraints. All in all though the facilities do allow for an enjoyable environment to study in!

Wherever you in the world or whoever you are, if you want to work, study or send your family and friends here; just don't do it. The place is an absolute disgrace. The place is a scam; a hoax. I thought I experienced it and saw it all at the previous so called "University" I worked at - University College Birmingham. I thought Birmingham City University would be different and be better, but clearly I was mistaken, it turns out it was worse. Repeat mistakes are common here. Staff are outside regularly smoking. HR are absolutely useless. The entire IT network has gone down on multiple occasions. The IT set up is terrible and perhaps the worst of its kind, not just in the UK but perhaps in the world. The place goes through scapegoats and staff are not fit for purpose. I was bullied and picked and used as a scapegoat from day one. Made false accusations and when they could not prove anything, they made further false accusations on top. I feel like I was picked on because I was Asian and a Muslim. I was spoken to in a belittle manner and for no reason shouted at by managers and other staff. Also sworn at. The place has an extremely high turnover of staff. There are several other negative reviews regarding this place such as the ones written on glassdoor. I would not recommend to anyone to work or study here. Place is built on rumours; nepotism is common here too. There are staff who are fully aware of what goes on here but do not say anything and engage in the corruption, perhaps, in order to promote themselves or get their family and friends in. Given the opportunity your colleagues will back stab you and you will not even know. The staff engage in the bullying and corruption to either to attempt to promote themselves or they are worried the same might happen to them and therefore you cannot trust anyone. Unfortunately, you will find staff who are inexperienced and have little or no knowledge regarding education. Management and HR are only concerned about how to make money for themselves and invest in other means. I was denied annual leave for religious reasons and expected to work when others where allowed to go off. Special treatment is provided to others and you are expected to be treated and accepted as the scapegoat. There is no respect, support of fairness shown. There was no communication from management or HR. Just hearsay. They will try to make you appear that you are in the wrong and provide you their own definition of what they want you to hear. You will be called into several meetings and be falsely accused of things based on random accusations. Micro management is loved here. HR will go around and ask others to write witness statements against you based on lies. Also they will get witness statements from people who weren't even there. Your words will be twisted and your side of what really happened will not be taken into account. Also don't give them ideas as they will take them from you and claim it for themselves. They will not acknowledge that you were the one who came up with them in any way. Blame culture is present with extremely rude managers. I saw people quit after working just one day. I also head people didn't do a half a day and quit. There is no morale. Pay is low too. They will take advantage of your hard work and push more work on to you, whilst they will just be laid back. They will put you in front of HR and management and will attempt to make you admit made up false accusations. The staff will speak as if they are animals, perhaps worse than an animal. Especially HR, I do not think I have ever seen a HR department which is so terrible. The HR director used to work with the current VC at a different University. Polices and procedures are not followed and made up along the way. They will follow it to suit themselves. They will say one rule is for you and you only. But they do not have to follow any of them. Disgusting and disgraceful. The following happened to me, when I joined there, I never had these problems before working there; -Verbal abuse inside and outside the University -Physical abuse outside the University - I was spat on and coughed on -Someone called the Police on me whilst I was walking home from work for no reason, but the Police never turned up whilst I was waiting there -A racist shouting out P@kI to me whilst I was being called into the first investigation meeting against me by their incompetent HR department and deputy director of IT -Harassed and stopped by the West Midlands Police -Harassed by the West Midlands Ambulance Service -Nearly run over by a West Midlands Paramedic van and if I had not run across the road; I do not know what would have happened -Attacked by a West Midlands Paramedic and as a result of the attack I have had a head injury and suffering memory loss

I only really discovered Access 2 Music a few years ago through a project I was working on to signpost young people to creative and cultural stuff going on in the city. As a national organisation they employ talented musicians to help you hone your craft and interest in music as well as provide you with a wealth of contacts and networks. You aren't working in isolation to make music, instead you will find yourself with a wealth of opportunities to collaborate and learn about the music industry. They even have an awesome awards ceremony, and the one I attended had the lovely and humble Edith Bowman presenting. It felt like a serious awards ceremony that celebrated the talent and work of those on the courses.

They were originally located towards Jewellery Quarter…read morebut have now moved into their own fully purpose built space on Heath Mill Lane in Digbeth; just behind the Custard Factory. So, the easiest way to get to the college is via the number 97 bus from town, as it drops you off right outside the college. If you want to get into the music industry and want to gain a qualification, plus also build up your contacts and network with industry professionals- this place is where you need to enrol yourself into. It's one of the best UK Music colleges; the students who attend are highly talented individuals who are really trying to pursue a career in music. I first visited Access to Music College earlier on this year for a little mini concert they held but have since visited the college for meetings. In regards to the building, it's like an industrial space which has been converted into an incubator for budding musicians. There are two levels; the top level being where all the staff offices are located, the ground floor offers the students luxury music booths- there's about 8 to 10 booths (if I remember rightly). Each booth has sound proofing, a range of different equipment which the students can utilise. The rooms are also for different purposes, some booths are strictly for rehearsing in while others are more for recording and carrying out the production part of the music making. The whole building has been kitted out with the latest equipment. The best feature in my opinion is their huge hall space which they use for concerts, conferences and practising.

It looked like an old factory to put it bluntly, some of the windows were broken and the roofs used to leak when its used to rain, a true pollutant to your vision. The plus sides also include some of the teaching; some teachers have been there since the 1980's so have a welath of experience and knowledge and it did achieve a good report compared to other colleges. The i.t department also did not charge anything for print outs. The canteen also serves some delicious food and there is plenty of seats to go by.
