This is the most affordable spot I've found in Baton Rouge coming from Texas although they are super busy the customer service is great and they move as fast as they possibly can. They are the only veterinarian that can get my dogs nails cut to where I cannot hear them at all. They do such a fantastic job although they do give him anxiety when it's time to get his shots. I've only been once but can say that it was a pleasant experience! If you're a walk-in (like I was) the wait time is about 2-3 hours, so definitely schedule an appointment if you can. I was talking to other pet parents there during my wait and they mentioned that people start lining up at 7:30 am. I love AVS! They are really economical. When anything happens with my puppy, I know I can call and get the best advice or I can walk in and get him care, if I don't have an appointment. There are a number of vets on staff to meet your needs. Most of the ones that I have encountered are great with one exception, Michelle Wheat. This woman lacks compassion and comes across as almost mechanical. She seems annoyed and bothered all the time. She has literally NO bedside manner. If you choose AVS, your pets will get the best care, but I would strongly advice anyone seeking pet care to avoid Michelle Wheat at all costs. Dr. Rachel Anderson is an awesome option. I had the ABSOLUTE WORST experience here! Brought my dog here because her stomach began to swell. Ms Forbes stated she had a large tumor on her spleen based on an X-ray. I was given a total price for the surgery and I paid most of it for the deposit because that's what they requested. I got a call mid-surgery stating the tumor was actually on the kidney and my dog possibly had cancer as well but she wasn't sure and Ms. Forbes recommended putting her down and told me the cost of her ashes. Since the surgery wasn't complete because she euthanized her, I expected I should have gotten some of my money back OR I at least shouldn't have had to pay anything more. Now they are saying I still owe the remaining balance. She also said she gave me a discount on the surgery since she euthanized her. If that was the case I shouldn't owe anything! The service was TERRIBLE! It has been a whole month since my dog has been euthanized and I've still been dealing with the pricing situation because they've been changing prices and giving me the runaround with lack of communication. When I called to discuss the matter they hung up in my face. In person, Forbes dismissed me and told me to never come back to see her. I wish I had never seen her in the first place. She was VERY rude! Now I wonder if my dog could have been saved if she had seen someone else. Izzy at the front desk definitely had compassion and was very helpful, even though this situation was out of her hands. There have been 3 generations of my family that have gone to AVS. Sometimes it surprises me to see Dr. Craig as not being 40 years younger, then I remember that I am no longer a little kid walking in my grandma. My family has always had adopted cats (mostly strays to our homes) and dogs, and we love to have an affordable vet practice that helps us care for these sweeties. These are the most hard-working, selfless vets and vet techs in Baton Rouge. I love seeing the office pets at the desks and in the halls, and I see the love that these employees give all pets that come there. So I hope my 5* rating gets added among some of these ratings that are bringing the average below 4*. What I am seeing is generally a distaste for some of the office staff in the comments, and I think this part is true for a small part of the staff. Actually, a longtime member of their office staff was a bit flippant and condescending toward me this past Saturday, so I am concerned that this behavior may be considered as acceptable with trainees. Other than that, I have nothing but glowing reviews for about 40 years of visits. I hope this practice continues long after Dr. Craig's retirement, as it does an invaluable service for those of us who love animals & try our best to keep at least one stray out of animal control shelters. read more

Updated bc this because last year, when I brought My cat r for a Follow up, the vet absolutely did not go the extra mile. She just suggested I make a phone call and see if maybe I could get in somewhere. My cat ended up being days away from Losing her actual eyes when I went for another opinion just days later. The vet I saw at AVS didn't see the emergency that my thankful second opinion saw. They were nice and all, but both of my cats showed the signs of viral herpes, and it was never mentioned until she was about to have surgery. Do your basic care here, but if there is anything out of the ordinary, find another vet. (Also, my new vet saw the need to do all the shots, not just the one basic ) read more

I'm a long-time customer of AVS. They have always treated my pets with the utmost care, and I have never thought about going anywhere else. However, my experience today with the front staff deserves a review. I simply needed some flea treatment for my two cats, but the resistance and condescension I received were more than disturbing. My rescues have been healthy for 12 and 7 years, respectively, but the folks currently working the front desk at AVS seem ready to judge. I'm considering going elsewhere for my pets' care. read more

We were referred here by LSU as we're on a tight budget. Not only were the staff extremely caring and kind they were able to save my boy cat with staples and surgery for the lowest I've ever left a vet facility. It cost the same to save his life as it would have just to be seen at any other vet. They went above and beyond to get him seen quickly (we walked in without an appointment) and kept him comfortable while we waited. They were extremely patient explaining all of our options for his broken leg, even offering to do a second surgery half price if the first surgery wasn't successful. Overall I couldn't recommend a better vet clinic! This will be our go to facility from now on! Side note: it is freezing in there so remember to bring a jacket! read more

I have been using AVS for nearly 2 decades and always found their care and work to be top notch and reasonably priced. With that being said... Brought my elderly Yorkie to them this morning for what was diagnosed as Bladder stones that needed to be removed, while waiting outside my dog started bleeding from his rectum. I went inside to the desk and explained my dog was in critical need of attention. The girl at the desk said that they were not an emergency facility and to wait outside until called. At no time did she show any concern or sympathy to a potentially life threatening situation. She had no concern what so ever nor did she seek out any advice from the staff Veterinarians, she just did not care and was very rude. No idea why AVS would employ someone with poor customer skills, lack of compassion and obvious did not want to be there attitude. We own 5 dogs and while AVS has been very good in the past, I will not be returning because of this person's lack of desire to help an animal in need. PS. Called another Vet while walking out the door and they insisted that I get the dog to them and they were waiting at the door to make sure he was seen quickly. read more

I understand the need for a low cost clinic, but I do not recommend AVS to any pet owners in the BR area. I have visited AVS twice in 10 years and each time I saw glimpses of incompetence and unprofessionalism. While I am sure that they have done some great things for other people's animals, my experience was not altogether positive. From what I can tell, AVS is overwhelmed with pet emergencies and taking care of the animals so the vets do not prioritize bedside manner or explaining situations to pet owners. The first visit 6 years ago, I brought my large (but extremely friendly and normally well behaved) dog in for routine check up. They immediately muzzled him, did not attempt to create a rapport or relationship with my dog, and it was a really traumatizing experience for him. He was scared for 2 days after and didn't want to get in the car. The most recent visit, I brought in my cat because my normal vet was closed. The wait wasn't bad, and the staff was friendly, but things took a turn once we realized that my cat was actually in an emergency situation due to urethral obstruction. They took an x-ray, and then came rushing back with paperwork. The first red flag was when the vet rushed through the explanation and couldn't remember the whole name of the issue (which, fine- she wanted to get in there and help him, but I really needed some type of explanation) and then told me point blank "Your cat is going to die if you don't sign this and we get him to the back." What could I do? I signed the paperwork and of course was crying because they took my cat from me and I didn't really understand what was going on, but I trusted that they knew what they were doing. The vet said "Man, you're the second person I made cry today. Is my demeanor that bad?" At no point did any of the AVS staff explain that feline urethal obstruction is actually a common issue and as long as he received treatment, his chances were good. The vet did call me after they flushed his bladder and inserted a catheter, but her explanation was not thorough and there were so many "well it MIGHT be this... or this...I just gotta tell you this because it's a possibility..." and I understand that veterinary medicine is complex, but after speaking to an experienced and trusted vet, I'm pretty sure that the complications in my cat's situation were more because of AVS's vet's inexperience. I'm sure they did the best they could, but as a result of their care, my cat has had a catheter put in him 4 times in the span of a week which is not considered a best practice as it causes trauma to the urethra. AVS vet explained that the catheter initially "went in weird" and that she wasn't sure why. She mentioned that she was concerned that there was the possibility of a tear in his urethra. My current vet has explained that any vet worth their salt would know if there was a tear by the way the catheter goes in and that her explanations to me were odd. AVS referred us to the emergency animal hospital after around 48 hours because they "just don't know what is wrong." The vet made it seem as though my cat needed emergency life saving surgery or he would die... the emergency animal hospital explained that he was fine and proceeded to give him the same exact treatment that AVS did only this time they experienced no issues with the catheter and no issues with his bladder. After a very expensive stay, I transferred my cat to my normal vet who, after reading all of the treatment history and reviewing his x-rays, explained that it appeared that AVS made several mistakes. One of which was only securing the catheter with one stitch (which later led to the catheter ripping out) and monitoring my cat's "output." According to my normal vet, the catheter should never have left my cat until his urine ran clear and all evidence of crystals and stones were gone. Also, he explained that all of the "life or death" surgeries that were discussed were not my only options (which was NEVER explained to me.) In fact, as I was leaving AVS, the AVS vet quickly said that the surgery for the urethral tear is rarely successful. I'm assuming she threw this out to let us know not to waste our money but... I love my cat and would "waste" the money if there was a chance to save him. I think there were better ways to phrase that. Overall, I think AVS did all they could to save my cat, and he is good now so I am thankful that they took the time to treat him, but I would not categorize the experience as positive, and I am hoping that there is a lot that happened that I don't understand that explains why AVS experienced complications. read more

On 09/13, my husband and I were faced with THE hardest decision about our dog-baby. We scheduled an appointment with our personal vet, but they couldn't see us during our emergency. We reached out to AVS, and from the moment I called them to inquire, until I left there after our "decision", the staff showed us quality service, compassion, concern, and respect for our dog-baby. They explained everything in terms that I could understand and didn't make me feel rushed about making my decision. The waiting area was huge and clean and friendly for all animals inside. I will definitely be recommending to all of my friends and family they come for a visit with their fur-babies. Wonderful careing staff! They go out of their way to, help and answer your questions and make you feel very much at home. And they are very caring about your sick baby (dog or cat) Long hours fits almost anyone's shedule. Not pricey at all and they will tell you up front the cost just ask, They will work with you. AVS on Greenwell Springs has been a saving grace to my family twice this year! First time we visited was for my oldest dog who is feeling lethargic. The staff was so sweet and quickly diagnosed her with a UTI. They got us some antibiotics and sent us on our way. The price was so reasonable and the staff was incredibly helpful. read more

I brought my dog here he wasn't feeling good and I knew something was wrong. He was seen pretty fast they took labs and said he was diabetic and that he was pretty sick that it was really serious and that he might not make it. They monitored him and gave him medicine immediately monitored him for the next two days I had to bring him home with me at night time with monitoring my dog they were able to get his sugar under control and his is alive today ...
