This wasn't the greatest experience in the world, and at one point it was a comical disaster. We went on a very windy day (10-20 mph) that got windier as we were on the water. The way out against the wind and tide was tough. The way back, with wind and tide hitting us sideways, was worse. We got pushed into the marsh reeds and stuck in the mud, with each wave pouring into the canoe and soaking our butts. The water was not deep (obviously, since we were stuck), and it wasn't super-cold, but it was a little freaky to be totally unable to move against the tide and wind. By the way, I had called the company the prior day to discuss whether we could even go out in those conditions, and explained we had kayaked in the past but never in rough water or high winds. Eventually, we pushed our way out with our paddles in the muck and turned to open water. No thanks to our guide, who was 50 feet ahead, just sort of sitting there in open water. He seemed oblivious to our struggles, as well as the other person on our trip, who also had been blown into the marsh. So while I appreciated that we saw a lot of ponies in the marsh, I can't rate the experience very highly when we got such little help from our guide. Overall, he was nice, but he was a slacker. He gave us no advice on how to position ourselves in the wind and tide, and when I referred to how hard it was when we were finished, he said, Yeah, you seemed to be working it out, and the water was cold so I didn't want to have to climb in and pull you. Dude, that's what you're paid to do! Bottom line is that our guide was only ok. He told us interesting stuff about the ponies and their evolution. We talked about launches from Wallops. He knew about the grasses and snails and tides and other stuff, if we asked. And I give him credit for taking us to a 2nd area with more ponies, even though it extended his time beyond schedule. But was it a 5-star effort to make us feel confident under tough conditions? No. read more

My tour guides were very passionate and knowledgeable about the island. They are strong and excellent kayakers. That being said, I have some concerns based on my experience and what these instructors actually told me about how the company is run. I did not appreciate their telling me how little they are paid, presumably to get tips. On the other hand, if they're that bitter that they have to overtly guilt trip customers, perhaps it's time to up their wages. -They said they are paid $40/trip when we each pay 50% more than that, not including tips. -They neglected to tell us exactly where to aim for. One of the guides told me to aim for where the river boats were going. All of a sudden, I realized the rest of the group was way closer to the land, which meant I didn't get to see the ponies they saw and we as a group didn't make it as far as we were supposed to. Please tell everyone where to aim for at each part of the trip. -One of the guides complained *to me* (as I struggled to keep up with the group) about how unfit everyone in this group is despite the website clearly saying you're supposed to be in excellent shape to do this tour. 2 things: 1) Do not complain about customers to each other, and 2) I do consider myself fit, but still found this a tough activity. I did not see anything about this on the website. I also didn't see information I've seen on other kayak tours, like what to wear/bring, and questions about height/weight. This info could help tour gudies determine whether a group will be viable, such as whether there will be a big difference in abilities and speeds. I know I'd have done much better if I'd worn the right shoes. -As the only singleton in a group of all families, I was repeatedly (inadvertantly) pushed off my course by people trying to catch up with their family members. It was uncomfortable for me to have to speak up about this on my own, especially to children. I recommend naming this as a norm before going out on the water: be aware of other kayakers and try not to bump into each other. read more

LOVE! This business is only about a year old, but the owners/guides sure know their stuff. We did a morning kayak tour. We easily booked online on their website, the FAQs on their website were clear, and the meetup instructions were great. They give a beginner's paddling lesson to start, and had selected kayaks to make sure that everyone had a good seat. On the tour, they gave us some history about the island, and showed us tons of creatures. We saw and held moon jellyfish, little fishes, and different crabs. Lots of birds, and OF COURSE the PONIES! OMG, we ran into the yearling group on the beach, grabbed some great pictures, and then they tried to follow us to our kayaks! SO wanted to pet them, but we know that we aren't supposed to and our guides reinforced this policy. The owners/guides, Steve and Jess, are just lovely people and we had such a great time. Partner and I went on their kayak excursion Sunday morning, which happened to reach almost 70 degrees with barely any wind...a perfect day! Jess and Steve were careful to ensure that everyone knew the basics before launch. Along the route, they articulated the history of our surroundings and how Chincoteague came to be, the pony roundup, oyster farming, marine biology, other wildlife, ecology, etc. They were very personable throughout and had great bedside manners, which definitely comes in handy with children. They make a great couple, too. This is a must-do when in Chincoteague! read more

Do it! This was a lovely experience and worth every penny. These are two premium high class people showing you around the bay and I promise you won't be disappointed. Even if you don't see horses. Steve and Jessica are a part of the magical island that is Chincoteaque let them take you on an adventure that transcends time and space.
