Currently "the world's largest open air geodesic dome", ASM sits on a beautiful 45 acre lot. Although designed by John T. Kelly, the architecture of the building reminds me of a Frank Llyod Wright design and was truly ahead of its time (1958).
This unique experience includes a mineral garden (over 50 mineral ore samples) with an eye catching fountain at its center. Dedicated to Eisenman, a granite memorial & of course the stunning 80-ton geodesic dome. There is also a small zen like garden tucked away that can only be accessed through the lower level of the building but can be see from up above. Although I wasn't able to tour the building, you can easily see inside the structure that was created to serve the engineering profession/sciences.
The mineral samples, however, are my favorite part of this visit. With so many colors, textures and shapes- if the milky way could be taken from the skies and placed on Earth, you would find its breath taking beauty held within these rocks. Being from a family of artists, the dome was naturally a favorite as well.
ASM is a wonderful historic destination for anyone who enjoys architecture, the sciences and engineering. And, of course, nature. read more
