High-class supermarket! I do not know how to name it…read moreproperly - Marktkauf is apparently a supermarket, but it is much more than that - it exceeds my expectations for a supermarket! The first time I visited this place, I was impressed by the neat atmosphere created by the good variety of items in well-organized shelves, the bright and warm lighting, and the well-trained staff working in this place. After a couple of visits, I realized that this supermarket does not only look nice - the butcher's shelves serve good quality products; there is a good cheese corner, and I could even find good soy sauce in different varieties and ideal rice for Asian cuisine! These specialties have made the supermarket outstanding. The price however seems higher here. I did not specifically compare the items one by one, but in my impression, the expense of weekly shopping at Marktkauf is about 1.5-2 times higher than what I would get in Frankfurt from REWE. There are also sections of home decorations, stationary, kitchenware, electronics, clothes/shoes etc. inside this supermarket. I do not have high expectations toward the quality and selection of these stuff in a supermarket. On the contrary, I was very surprised to find out that the selection of tableware is more classic and better-looking than what I could find in the Karstadt in Rhein-Necker Zentrum. The manager of the supermarket apparently knows how to display and to maintain the shelves to attract customers. With all the details well presented to customers, I feel respected as a customer when visiting Marktkauf. Outside of the supermarket area but at the entrance hall, there are also shelves of seafood, a haircut stall, a big bakery, and several small fast food places. Among those food places I have only tried the breads and cakes from the bakery, and I find it nice as well. Highly recommended!

One MASSIVE section that's about the same size as an entire isle at a typical US grocery store. Then there are two large bins with more gourmet selections. And finally, there is the very special selections behind the butcher counter. Just amazing. Check out the picture attached to this review for an indication of the size. Oh yeah, the day I visited they were also giving away half liter bottles of beer to all customers over 18. FREE BEER!.

There is normally at least two or three fruit and vegetable stalls, one or two sausage and cheese stalls, another for fish and a bakery van. Most times there is also a florist. The produce here is excellent!! Expect to pay more than you would in the supermarket however the quality exceeds any supermarket expectation. You will find the tradesmen at the marktplatz, behind the church.

Don't get me wrong, they are also great beers, but they don't have the bitter sweet taste of a high IBU (international bitterness unit) of an IPA. While wandering through Heidelberg we discovered you can actually find bottled IPA style beers from German micro Brewers right here at Upper Glass, among a whole host of other beers. We selected two and then walked around with out bottles. Then we gave our bottles to a student to collect the refund on he recycling. It was a hot day in Heidelberg and these beers certainly went down well!

I am a fan of Belgian beers and found a few faves (Chimay, Delirium) and also a selection of hard ciders and fruit Lambics. Prices are higher than your avg Supermarket, which is expected from the selection. The shop worker (possibly owner) left us to look around and when we had questions he was able to answer all of them. I plan to be a repeat customer! PS- since they are craft beers I assume most places wont give you your deposit back, but it looks like you can bring them back to the shop (prices on the price tickets)
