    My boyfriend and I loved this hotel! We wanted to be in the heart of Groningen and this fit the…read morebill. It's within walking distance of many restaurants, the main train station, and the bus station. As a Best Western Rewards member, I was happy that they thanked me for being a member when I checked in. The front desk staff were so friendly and helpful. They made the visit extra special. They answered our many questions about the area and gave helpful advice. Our room was on the small side but very comfortable. We had a nice view of the city. The air conditioning was tepid at best, but with the windows open, the room stayed cool at night. We paid extra for the breakfast buffet, which was well worth the price. There was a good variety of hot and cold items, Dutch cheese, and juices (the apple juice was my favorite. It was much fresher and tastier than American apple juice!). There was a coffee machine in the lobby that was free for guests. They also had hot water and tea bags available. We bought bottled water in the lobby, although their tap water was supposedly really good. They had some cute gifts and postcards for sale in the lobby as well. The lobby itself was spacious and welcoming, with lots of places to sit and hang out. There were also tables outside, just in front of the hotel. We loved our stay and would definitely return.

In this case, I'm giving the Hampshire Hotel three stars based on our needs during this visit. We stayed in Groningen which is quite close to Assen during our attendance at the Moto GP (in Assen). There were not hotels available in Assen. The Hampshire sits on a very large property next to a beautiful little lake with a running path and beautiful green fields all around it. In fact, when we were driving in, we thought we had made a wrong turn because it's down a long rural looking road. It's quite large for it's location and seems to be kind of a convention like hotel. For 159 Euro, we had a very large room and an extra 79 Euro a bed for our daughter and they only charged us for one breakfast at 13 Euro (typical European buffet). The rooms are very basic with a bathroom and a separate room for the toilette. The reception area is modern and airy. Outside, they have a very large yard with an outdoor seating area for eating or enjoying a nice beverage. The waitstaff were quite formal and attentive. We didn't eat much other than breakfast at the hotel and that was average. There is a pool, but I must say that it was relatively oogy. My daughter kept asking me if what she was swimming in was really water. It was murky and the ratio of chlorine to water was probably close to 50/50...made your eyes water. Overall, for a quick night's stay, it did the job.

    Voor onze trouwdag hadden wij een suite met een vijfgangendiner gereserveerd bij dit hotel…read more Om half zeven namen wij plaats in het restaurant. Op dit moment kregen we ons welkomstdrankje. Om kwart over zeven werd de eerste gang geserveerd en rond acht uur de tweede. Toen hebben we aangegeven bij de bediening dat wij 's avonds nog plannen hadden, en dat we het wel lang vonden duren tussen de gangen. Wij hoorden toen van de persoon die onze tafel bediende dat "onze tafel vandaag geen prioriteit had" (letterlijke quote). Hierna was voor ons de glans er wel een beetje af. Toen wij na half negen pas ons hoofdgerecht koud opgediend kregen met daarbij ons tweede drankje, de wijnsuggestie van de bediening, zaten we inmiddels in een compleet leeg restaurant. Door het lange wachten, maar ook vooral het gevoel dat we niet welkom waren, hebben we het hoofdgerecht en de wijn teruggestuurd en zijn we vertrokken. Wij hebben 's avonds nog ergens anders gegeten. Op onze trouwdag. Onze klacht hebben wij besproken met de general manager, Emile, via email. Ook hebben wij om compensatie gevraagd omdat wij nog ergens anders hebben moeten eten. Dit was de reactie: "Wij bereiden het eten vers op moment van bestellen in de keuken en ondanks verschillende dieetwensen zijn de gerechten in een normaal tempo geserveerd en voor een 5 gangen diner, dit duurde niet langer dan gebruikelijk. Het is erg vervelend dat u zich niet welkom voelde bij ons personeel en ik heb dit besproken met hun en zal hier aan gaan werken om dit in de toekomst te voorkomen." Wees dus gewaarschuwd. Het is normaal bij dit hotel om na 2 uur en 3 kwartier nog geen hoofdgerecht te hebben, en hoewel de bediening ons letterlijk vertelde dat onze tafel geen prioriteit had (in een leeg restaurant) was het slechts ons gevoel dat we niet welkom waren. Zware tegenvaller. Totaal het geld niet waard, en ze zijn dus ook niet bereid om problemen op te lossen met ontevreden gasten.
