I'll tell you why and also why I give it five stars even though it's currently closed. As a family with several queer elements and various expressions, it's important to me that we have inclusive places to go for personal services. Nothing quite like walking into a place only to be met very obviously by people's unfriendly biases, right? So I do my best to mitigate this sort of thing right from the beginning. While I was looking into barbershops around here that might fit the bill, I stumbled across Hair & Body Mechanix. I tried to schedule an appointment but the owner/operator Aaron Kaehr wasn't accepting new clients. Now usually I wouldn't even ask. I do try to respect people's boundaries but I'll admit, I did contact him as this had nothing to do with me directly, but for someone very close to me who is really struggling. So I had a compelling reason to ask but I also told him that I was good with a no. Here is why I give a five star review. The owner, Aaron Kaehr, wrote me a very sweet email back. He graciously explained his boundaries and stuck to them. Even though I would have loved to be able to take my family member to him, I 100% respect this. I'm also grateful for the way he took the time to explain even though he certainly wouldn't have owed an explanation to me. He recommended we go try out a shop owned by someone who used to work for him who fully and actively supports the LGBTQ+ community. I made an appointment right away with the owner but through no fault of her own, we had to cancel but she told me about the other people who work in her shop and we were able to get in right away. I'll review their shop separately but Aaron Kaerh's recommendation was spot on. Ship Shape Barbershop in Oak Harbor, WA is a lovely little place so definitely check it out! So, if Monsieur Kaehr ran this business with anything like what he showed me, his patrons were very, very lucky indeed.

I tell him I want 1/4 way over my ears and and about 1/2 inch all around and just clean it up, and he agrees... little did I know he didnt know a lick of English.. he rapidly starts taking 1-2 inches off everywhere with scissors and electric razor... he keeps turning me away from looking in the mirror but I keep turning the chair back to see in it.....he takes both my sideburns off in a second and goes above my ears and I stop him immediately - the damage is done.. he doesn't understand why I stop him and gets someone who speaks English (that's when i understand that he doesn't).. I now have a non symmetrical side-wise mullet... I get them to slightly clean it up and get out of there visibly upset (they don't charge me) and now I go tomorrow to somewhere else to try to clean it up before I start my new job...They were busy with all Hispanic barbers and all but one Hispanic clients at the time and all getting quite short cuts (to me), and all seemed nice enough, but check to see if you are being understood in your cut request here (to note I'm a white guy)...I don't understand why they didn't direct me to an English speaking barber for an English looking dude.

He has a vision for his clients and makes suggestions that are the best fitting for the I individual. This is almost unheard of with cuts for men, especially from an older barber! He charges $15 and one definitely gets a personal touch while here. This is a small, single man show run by an older gentleman, dont expect to be rushed out in 15 min.
