We transferred from one of the city magnet schools hoping for more arts integration, and really, there are no more arts at this school than any other public school in the area.
This year so far: Just one (1) school-wide performance/musical; only three (3) class field trips; just two (2) visiting artists have come to the school; two (2) performance troupes from other countries (very enjoyable). Four different art teachers this year alone. No group music opportunities for younger kids. It just seems that the school puffs itself up for its arts emphasis, and well, I have been underwhelmed by what *actually* takes place.
There are no opportunities to learn other languages, no options for advanced learning for younger kids (if any at all). The Student Council exists, but they rarely meet or do anything. Homework is minimal and ridiculously simple. My child is not academically challenged at this school.
I'm sure we can all acknowledge that NC public schools suffer from poor funding, I really do get this but fundraising efforts at ArtSpace are constant and the nickel-and-diming really gets oppressive. Lots of pressure on families to give, give and give some more - buy this, buy stuff for your classroom, ask your relatives/friends/neighbors to donate for X causes, and really, it's just never ending.
And forget about any anti-bullying program. Our child endured very disturbing and physically intrusive behaviors from a classmate which was an ongoing source of stress for our family and despite our best efforts e.g. following school protocol, talking with teachers and ultimately going to the administration, nothing was ever done about it, no consequences for the other kid, no preventive measures enacted, nothing.
At this point, our child only goes there for logistical purposes until we can find a better solution.
ArtSpace is entirely overrated!! read more
