Let the Good Times Roll!...A Weekend well spent with food, friends and family!!…read more Nestled around the waterways of the Chesapeake, Potomac and Rappahannock River...is a small tidewater town populated by more boats than people.....named Urbanna, VA. Although I was not born and raised in this small town, I have family here and during November the river home becomes host to many family members and friends from afar. Each November, the town of Urbanna throws the country's largest and longest-running Oyster themed--food and wine festivals called the "Urbanna Oyster Festival!" The town's streets are closed to vehicle traffic and become filled with oyster booths, seafood dishes, music and crafts. The festival highlight is the oyster itself and a shucking contest which draws spectators from around the world. The festival is held the first weekend of November each year, from Friday morning to ending Saturday night. For a town a little over 500 people, the annual festival's attendance over the two days is in between 50,000-75,000. During the festival, the town is closed to traffic in the afternoon on Friday and for most of the day Saturday. Admission to the event is free of charge, although there is a fee for parking within the vicinity of the festival. Home to the Oyster Festival for almost sixty years, Urbanna is synonymous with Chesapeake Bay oysters. Food, Wine and Arts n' Crafts...is the name of the game here! The food is provided in many different forms by over fifty vendors. The beloved oyster is always available in ample supply and in a variety of presentations: raw, roasted, fried, smoked, steamed, in fritters or in a stew. There is a plethora of eats to be had! In addition to the oysters, one can enjoy clams, crabs, shrimp, Philly Steak, oriental food, hamburgers, hot dogs, roast beef and other goodies too numerous to mention. Local Virginia Wineries offer up some of the best libation and even though its not my thing the hand made Art n' Crafts sold here invoke lots of great memories of the things my Nanna often crafted and loved. There is definitely a variety of crafts and artwork available for sale throughout the town and within Festival's village. Among the many offerings are handmade furniture, stained glass, antiques, wood carvings, sculpture, pottery, leather goods and jewelry. There is some of everything here at this festival for all ages. Hay Rides, Pony rides, amusement park rides and many outdoor games for the kids. For the adults, young and old....FOOD! Oh and did I say FOOD!?....No let me clarify GREAT INSANE FOOD! I have never been so stuff! This weekend was truly a great one. The perfect mini-vacation with family and friends! I mean....What better way to spend a holiday weekend and getaway from the "hustle n' bustle" of the city!? Come here with a big appetite because the folks native to this town are the most generous, hospitable people and welcome you with open arms! Each home and restaurant visited, we were shoved food in giant proportions. Small town charm and simple living is what you will find here in Urbanna, VA.....and based on the local eats and this festival...they clearly don't care about snobby paleo diets, low-carb desires, obsessive compulsions to the gym or your waist line...as in the city! LOL.

First things first: Park at the school and take the trolley over. It's a dollar round-trip and worth it. I think calling it a "Blueberry Festival" was a bit of a stretch. There were some blueberry things, sure, but I think I saw just as many folks selling stuff with lavender in it, but we didn't call it a "lavender festival." There were easily over a hundred vendors on the grounds and maybe 5 of them dedicated to blueberries. Highly recommend the blueberry ice cream from Island Creamery (but if you missed the festival, you can always get it at their storefront). Also, Sugarbakers' blueberry pie was killer, though to be fair, I am a sucker for blueberry pie. There were a few trucks and stands selling proper food, including a shawarma truck and a Greek food truck. So you could get a full meal or just graze from some folks selling snacks and pastries. Lots of artisans selling their wares from clothing, sculptures, jewelry, paintings, etc. Several folks sold their homemade tea blends. There were several musicians on the rotation, so enjoy the live music too! While about half of the vendors were outside, the other half were inside the center and it's a great way to escape the heat and humidity of July and enjoy some AC. The only other review on here (as of this writing) is 9 years old and while I don't know what it was like then, this seemed well-run and quite popular. If you're in the area while it's running, come check it out!

Never did find VIP reserved parking lot so we just parked on the street. One of the origanizers told me there was 1 sign on some street. I tasted so many I don't even remember them all but I know my favorite this year was one from Chesapeake, VA called Ingleside Vineyards. They had this wine with a blue crab label that was out of this world!! It was their Blue Crab Red... and it was phenomenal! I have to say, VA is starting to become a pretty large competitor in the wine community... this vineyard in my opinion is rated as one of the higher end ones that I've tasted. The food options were nice... I was a bit disappointed that Saucy's wasn't there but Wabi Sabi was and that was quite tasty. Over all, this was definitely a fantastic event and I can't wait to go again next year!

We caught the last day on the Sunday. - Set Up - The pavilion that houses the International Sand Sculpting Championship is on 7th. There were a few food vendors on 5th and 6th and then there are just a sea of vendors past 7th for goodness knows how far. The line to the pavilion wraps around and looked deceivingly long, but thr line moved pretty quickly. There is a $7 entrance fee, cash only, and kids under 12 are free with an accompanying adult. It is just so incredible to me that these artists basically put their heart and soul into these masterpieces and all for a limited time, and if you were lucky enough to see it, you will be included in the select # of people to have experienced it in real life. Sure there will be thousands, upon thousands of pictures taken, but never like the real thing. These aren't your little sand castles on a normal beach day either. Massive structures both in width, height and depth! Just remarkable! There were solo sculptures and tag team ones from artists from literally all over the world, including from our own country. Although there was a big crowd, it wasn't jam packed. There was even a sculpture they had available to get a little closer to take photo ops. You could vote for one solo and one tag team sculpture. The rest of the festival had local vendors from near and far! We found Flippin' Hangry to grab a quick bite of lumpias and pancit and walked all the way down to 23rd to see Cherry, the red ice cream trailer from Sundae Scoop! Definitely looking forward to attending again next year and will make it a yearly tradition!

Spanning 3 days…read more(Fri-Sun), I arrived about 11am Saturday, and was awestruck by the beauty of the church building. Going indoors to the Hellenic Center, I was warmly greeted, and was awestruck (again) by the gorgeous jewelry and other items for sale. I'll check them out later. Then into the large hall which was set up with a few dozen circular dining tables, and perhaps a dozen rectangular serving tables with chafing dishes on the perimeter, plus a stage on one side of the hall. Oh, where to start? I grabbed a tray, and ambled from one table to another, grabbing a Greek Salad, Greek Fries, Spanakopita, and Souvlaki with Rice. And a can of American Coke. As I enjoyed my lunch, the hall filled up more patrons and I realized I no longer had a good view of the stage. So I moved to a better table, and began to make notes: Greek Fries ($2): Not much different from French Fries; I ate every one. Greek Salad, $4: A very good Salad for the price, it comprised Lettuce, adequate Feta, Red Onions, Cukes, exactly 3 Kalamata Olives, with pits, and 3 Grape Tomatoes. And a cup of Greek Vinaigrette. I like the way the Cukes are sliced into spears instead of medallions. The Slouvaki with Rice ($10) was quite good. It would have been better if I had noticed the cups of Yogurt available in the serving line. But it was still quite good and I enjoyed every bite. I set aside the Spanakopita for later. Then a lot of activity on the stage, dancers getting into their position and the "DJ" getting into his. This is my only complaint about WGF. The acoustics, to use a technical term, suck! I could not understand the announcer, and the fidelity of the recorded music was dismal. Looking around, it seemed like the ceiling comprised acoustic tiles, so I'm not sure what steps need to be taken to improve the sound. The dancers, in three separate troupes, were very entertaining, especially the younger ones. I kept hoping for the music & dance from Zorba the Greek, but it was not to be. After 75-90 minutes, the dancers retired and I left to browse the jewelry vendors in the lobby. Bought 2 items, and came home. I neglected to ask how long the church has been making the festival, but as smooth as it was, I'm sure they've been doing this a few years. I eagerly await the Williamsburg Greek Festival next year. Update: 19.05.19: Eating the Spana at last. The best commercial Spanakopita in memory. (Not as good as my own (recipe from Moosewood) but still quite good.
