Frankly, you don't even want to spend more than a quarter of an hour getting your trim. So for the thousands of us slowly ageing men there's no need for all the fuss of a stylist and no need for Italian named places charging 30 quid or more for a cut. Instead it's all about finding the cuts for less than a tenner that have you in and out in ten minutes. They are surprisingly rare in London. Fyne Blades is just this kind of place and it took me months to find. It's a slim half-shop on funky Askew Road and I get my quick hair chop here for less than the price of a bottle of French wine and chat shit with the nice Polish lady. This totally blew away all preconceptions I had about paying lots of money for haircuts. In fact, I realised that there'd actually been a correlation between the expensiveness of the service and the crapness of the result. So when I got back, I thought I'd give this tiny local barber a try. He's not tiny, but his shop is. It's thinly sandwiched between the chemist and the chinese takeaway. There's a few other hairdressers nearby, including the long-established Colin The Barber on Cobbold Road (old school) - and for a long time after he opened, I never saw anybody in here. Now, though, it seems busier (though according to him, business is still slow) and I can see why. He gives a bloody good cut. Also, I always feel so oppressed by fake cool hairdressers. When they start talking to me, and I realise I have to up my Cool game, I just want to grab the scissors and plunge them into my eyes. There's none of that with this guy. And he's cheap.

Supercuts - Choppy, unblended blocks of fringe on both sides of my face after having my hair butchered by the stylist at Supercuts. You've been warned.

I first enquired about the location on the phone with it deemed a part of Westfield, yet probably being closer to the buses than the main shops, the staff seemed to speak poor English and struggled to understand, and the first woman I spoke to basically refused to help me - how rude! Upon arriving at the store, I found it to be understaffed for such a location, and rather small too, it was a tight squeeze meaning you could literally touch the person having a haircut next to you. The staff also seemed distracted during the work, which made the already poor customer service skills even worse. Due to poor customer service and lack of comfort in the salon, I can't justify anything over a one-star rating for Supercuts at Westfield.

I recently went in to Supercuts out of desperation for a simple trim. My fool-proof haircut (medium length, straight across, no fringe) was absolutely butchered to the point of no return by their stylists. My stylist cut my hair entirely too short and gave me choppy bangs and short layers, none of which I asked for. I have never been picky about my hair so for me to even feel as though I've gotten a bad cut is saying a lot. In the case of Supercuts you truly get what you pay for. It's convenient and costs 20 quid but you may as well have give the scissors to a toddler and let them style your hair as they please.
