4-22-24 & 5-17-24 Luckily in this past month I was able to drive across this bridge twice. First time as a passenger the second time I was the driver. It takes you from Charleston to Mount Pleasant which is directly north of it. Then on your return back south the same thing in reverse. It is definitely a site to see and not to be missed as it is so beautiful. Usually I am afraid of heights but going across you can see how well built it is and I felt safe. Definitely big enough to accommodate all the vehicles going across. Thankfully because of its size and well planned out design the traffic moves quickly across. read more

This is a very nice, iconic bridge connecting downtown Charleston to Mount Pleasant. You can cross by car or they have a pedestrian bridge, though I have only driven over it. There are ample lanes for crossing, and it does get backed up during rush hour. It is also really pretty at nighttime. read more

I'm not sure how to rate a bridge, but I made a wrong turn getting out of Charleston and went over the bridge to Mount Pleasant and ended up at Patriots Point... there was this HUGE accident on the other side, so I decided to stay in Mount Pleasant a bit, explore and find a place for dinner... Then after dinner, I drove back on the bridge and there was ZERO traffic. It's a nice bridge. Nicely lit at night. And from the water and at sunset, the bridge is quite beautiful. I love walking/running the Ravenel bridge at sunrise! This is best done with headphones to tune out the sound of traffic. The view from the top is simply gorgeous. You can sometimes catch a cargo ship going under, which is very cool to see. You can walk, run, or bike. Do not rollerblade!!! It is far too steep for this activity. A walkable bridge! We love to see it. We parked in the designated lot underneath the bridge and walked on the path over to the start. At this point in my trip, we had already driven on the bridge a few time during the day and at night and it's a spectacular work of architecture. We came here kinda early 9ish and it was chilly, as the wind moved all around us. Coming back was more comfortable since the wind was primarily blowing behind us. There are mile markers along the way, which I love. We decided to get to the 1 mile mark before turning back, making our trek 2 miles total. If you want to walk to the end of the bridge, it's 2.5, so 5 miles total. Choose your own adventure! Plenty of walkers, joggers, and bikers enjoying the morning. Since it's a busy bridge, it was pretty noisy so a good idea would be to test out some noise-cancelling headphones. It would be cool if the barrier between the pathway and lanes was higher to soften some of the noise, but it felt safe and I'm not so sure that would help dampen the cars anyway. This is a spectacular and cool bridge to run, walk, or bike. The views and the scenery are amazing, I ran during the day on Sunday and it's just a beautiful place to do your morning or evening routine. There are water fountains and the begging, mid point, and the end of the route just in case you forgot your water bottle. Recommend parking on the Downtown side. Been since 2007 I previously ran this bridge. Drove from North Charleston to Mt Pleasant, the drive over is steep . Parked at Shell station began slow run up to top. One thing I didn't remember was how narrow the walker/runner lane was compared to bike lane. I don't necessarily like being closed in while running so stayed on dotted line and did look-back for bikers when passing. I went to top and over on Charleston side a ways down close to where bends around into the city, turnaround came back. It gets bit windy on bridge so secure hats/visors. This is a super cool cable bridge whether traveling in a car or by foot. It is beautifully constructed with picturesque views and extremely pedestrian friendly. At no point was I in fear of my safety during my run. We traveled from Charleston and parked at the gas station on the Mount Peasant side. Running this bridge has been a bucket list item since driving over it in 2017. It wasn't as exhilarating as running the Sunshine Skyway in St. Pete, but it was pretty spectacular nonetheless. I highly recommend you take a drive or a stroll over it if you're visiting the Charleston area. read more

In numerous trips to the Charleston area, I've frequently driven over the bridge, but as my opportunities to visit may be coming to an end, I took the chance to walk the pedestrian section of the bridge. The bridge itself is a spectacular piece of infrastructure, and from a driving perspective I've never had any problems with traffic. The pedestrian/bike bridge on the downriver side is several miles long and is reliably well-attended, and the views are gorgeous, from the panorama of the city and its surrounding waterways to the ability to catch the sun setting through the suspension lines. At the center, there is a platform with some benches and a single trash can; other facilities are available in the park at the northern side of the bridge. I am a bit surprised that the fence on the pathway is as low as it is. Not that anyone is likely to fall over it accidentally, but it is not the sort of inward-sloping suicide deterrent construction that one commonly sees on major bridges, and I'm quite confident that the bridge is high enough that jumping would likely be fatal. I'll leave any deeper public health discussion outside the context of Yelp reviews, but simply to note to the visitor that I was surprised by that construction decision. read more

Beautiful structure Impressive and beautiful modern bridge that connects Charleston and Mt Pleasant. It has a similar look to our Bay Bridge in San Francisco as you enter and cross the bridge from the Oakland side. It reminded me of the diamond shaped tower except this bridge has two of those beautiful towers that has a cable-stayed suspension design. We had a nice view of it from the Patriots Point Naval Museum. The bridge has 8 lanes and crosses over the Cooper River. We crossed the bridge as we headed to Charleston for a cultural adventure. It is our first time in the State of South Carolina. The bridge also includes a shared bicycle-pedestrian path, safe for runners and walkers. The bridge must look beautiful at night with all the lights... I was just awed by it and thought that this was an amazing accomplishment. Charleston has a right to be proud of the Bridge! A Charleston iconic view- when the bridge opened it was the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America. Construction for this bridge that spans the Cooper River began in 2001 and was opened in 2005. The total length is 13,200' and 573' in height and connects downtown Charleston to Mount Pleasant. I took countless photos of the bridge on 3 different boat tours and from both sides of the river too. It is the tallest structure in South Carolina. Also known as the Cooper Bridge and Ravenel Bridge. The bridge had to be high enough to accommodate ship traffic to a world-class port, strong enough to withstand seismic events like Charleston's 1886 earthquake (magnitude 7.3), sturdy enough to weather hurricanes like Hugo and aesthetically pleasing enough to satisfy the discerning public eye. Very impressive engineering masterpiece from any angle, it represents America at its best and driving through is free unlike let's say the George Washington bridge where back in 2018 I had to pay 46 bucks to go through because my vehicle has 6 wheels, that was highway robbery or bridge robbery more appropriately. The Ravenel Jr Bridge is a staple of the Lowcountry for sure! I walk it once a year just for fun and always find a nice parking spot underneath the bridge on the Mt Pleasant side. I believe around summer time, films are played outdoors for public viewing and there's a fishing pier area where folks can also enjoy views of the peninsula. The sight of the ocean, marshland, forts, ships, USS Yorktown, etc are spectacular to soak in when you reach the middle part and there's some concrete benches scattered as well if you need a rest. You might want to bring headphones or ear plugs - the constant sound of the cars/traffic can be overstimulating for those that experience sensory overload. The walkway and bike lane are a bit narrow so being mindful of surroundings is also a must. At the bridge part near downtown, The Cigar Factory is just a few blocks down too in case you need to wet your whistle at Mercantile + Mash, slurp an oyster at Rappahannock, or maybe even treat yourself to a manicure at Varnish Lane! read more

This is one of the best things to do if you're into fitness and pretty views! You can park on either the Mt. Pleasant side or the Charleston side. If you park on the Mt. Pleasant side, you can use the parking at the Circle K. Make sure you lock your vehicle and keep valuables out of site. The bridge is a 2.5 mile route 1 way. If you go on the Mt. Pleasant side, there is also a little fitness trail at the bottom of the bridge. This is also where they do the annual Cooper River Bridge Run. Beware that there is a ridiculous amount of people who show up for that event and you need to sign up almost a year in advance. read more

The bridge run is an amazing event however should be hosted in the fall not in the middle of an already busy tourist season. Even if you don't want to sign up for the 10k, just walking the bridge on a nice day is a great time. Not much shade so plan accordingly. read more

I am terrified of bridges, TERRIFIED!!! For some reason this one did not scare me as bad as others. So why stop and walk it? Some suggested to park at the gas station but that felt wrong if I wasn't using the business. We found there is a parking lot right under the bridge where you can access the path easily as well as a visitor center, park, pier and gift shop. There is a good amount of foot and bicycle traffic so be cognizant of your surroundings. Pedestrian traffic stays to the inside lane and bikers on the outer lane. We went mid day and LAWD it was HoT!!!! Hang in there, there is a strong breeze after you get past the parking garage and hotel. It was a nice walk to the mid way point and there were benches to stop and admire the view. We stayed awhile and saw a container ship pass beneath us which was really fun, especially when the crew members waved big so we could see them. It made out day. The way down is much easier! When we got back to the bottom we visited the gift shop for smoothies to cool down with a nice view. Great experience! read more

It's 2.5miles total, with mileage signs, bench seats in the center, and various emergency call stations. As expected, passing vehicles were loud, but I was still able to maintain a conversation with a walking friend. We were unsure where to park... so we parked at the Kangaroo gas station (which was 0.4miles from the start of the bridge). Beautifully illuminated at night, the bridge is a vast improvement from the seperated, double sided, cantilever, double truss, super narrow rapidly aged, above water transportation statesman that held the high ground for years prior. Two diamond shaped towers anchor this monolithic beauty that without the nameskes influence and ability to negotiate funding, would have likley been a low budget toll bridge. With eight wide lanes, four a side, the Arthur Ravanel Jr. Bridge is not just for cars folks, the northernmost side is pleanty wide to accommodate walkers, joggers and bike riders. So walk it, run it, ride it but if your in town you must cross it by means other than with an automobile. read more

First of all, I love that you can review a bridge on Yelp :). How could I not give the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, also known as the Cooper River Bridge, 5 stars? It's an amazing piece of infrastructure and a VAST improvement over the old bridges which were so scary! I remember riding in a car over them as a kid and covering my eyes. For those of you who didn't grow up in Charleston or visiting, you can find videos of the "old bridges" on YouTube. The bridge itself has 4 lanes in each direction. Like all roads in Charleston, it gets backed up with traffic sometimes but I find that it usually moves pretty well aside from rush hour. When you drive over the bridge, it does not feel super steep or scary. The Arthur Ravenel Jr. bridge unites two cities- Charleston and Mount Pleasant- and it's an overall symbol of unity in our community. After the Emanuel AME shootings last year, people joined hands on the pedestrian path over the entire bridge in memory of the victims. Events in memory of the victims were held all over the area, but that was one of the biggest- probably because of the unity this bridge represents. You can run the pedestrian path any day, and it's a 5 mile round trip. Every time I drive over this bridge, I see someone running, walking, or biking it... no matter how hot, cold, wet, sunny, or windy it is! But, if you prefer an organized event, the Cooper River Bridge Run is held over the bridge. The Bridge Run's slogan is "get over it", and so many people do- you "get over" the fear of running over a bridge, or the fear of running a race- and maybe the bridge will help you get over other fears in your life. read more

I wanted to walk this bridge for years , but never had a good day to do it! So 71 degrees at Christmas time with a chance of rain was the right time! The hardest about the walk is finding parking! We were on the south side, charleston side! Parking is difficult! Look for public parking on east at across from a private gated lot ! Parking is only for 2 hours ! The walk at the most took us 40 minutes to go to the top and back . It's about 1.25 miles to the top. Great view and very windy. Be careful of runners and bikes ! A few benches to sit on ! read more

Great running path along the bridge. There are clearly marked running paths for bikers and runners. The path is also well lit in the morning with lots of runners so you feel fairly safe. The division between pedestrians is between a cement wall so there is safety built in there. There is at least two water stations on both ends. An enhancement would be a softer material to run on other than cement but I realize there is probably a weight or structural component considered here. Bottom line...great place for a bike ride, run or walk. Obviously this is a bit of a hill workout but not too challenging. The path is 2.5 miles one way from end to end so 5 miles out and back. This is an absolutely stunning bridge that gives Charleston Harbor a a real diamond in its crown. Or two diamonds, since that is what the two towers look like. The bridge is really easy to drive over with eight lanes (four in each direction) as well as a pedestrian and bicycle lane. You can see the bridge for miles and when you're on the bridge you can also see for miles. Fantastic views of Downtown and the harbor. Underneath the bridge, towards the entrance to Patriot's Point, there is a small parking area with a pier that goes out into the harbor. Great view of the bridge from there too! read more

Architecturally, an awesome looking bridge. Driving down the multiple lane bridge was an absolute pleasure as you can see the water glistening underneath and next to you from the Cooper River. I saw this bridge in the distance at night, and I knew I had to check it out. During the day, its just as marvelous. The bridge has 8 glorious lanes, 4 in each direction. Traffic on the bridge when I was there was pretty smooth and it was a delight to drive through as you go to and fro from Charleston and Mount Pleasant. Ironically, checking out Charleston, I ended up driving through this bridge over five times, but it was great to be able to. I didn't get a chance to walk through it, but from driving, it seems like there was quite a bit of foot traffic from joggers and walkers enjoying the beautiful Charleston weather. In either case, there's a sturdy barrier between automobile and pedestrian traffic. This is a hard to miss bridge if you're in the Charleston area, but regardless, definitely check out the bridge for a beautiful view of the area. read more
