Boba is one of those things that you always crave after a meal, but like most other millennial I'm now hard-pressed to add extra liquid calories to my day. Fortunately, I can fool myself into thinking that anything with fresh vegetables / fruits / etc. is relatively healthy, and so my go-to boba is Taro (even though it's a root.) Unfortunately, 99% of boba places use powdered Taro, including most of the places in Houston and Austin so imagine my surprise when a sleepy little boba shop in the suburbs of San Antonio has a drink made from fresh Taro. AND BOY WAS IT PHENOMENAL. I can't speak to the food, although the place was fairly packed and people seemed to be enjoying their cuisine, but of the three different boba drinks we got here - they were all phenomenal. The cashier was extremely helpful and when I asked how they made their taro, she brought out their actual soft-boiled roots to show me (it's not purple taro FYI - but mid-brown colored). I was literally so inspired by their taro milk tea that I went to 99 ranch once I was back home and bought 5 lbs of taro root to blend my own. It was that inspiring. read more

The sushi rolls here were also some of the best I've had in town. I wish they had more locations because they are truly a unique restaurant. COVID 19 experience: We have been coming here a lot this past two months for snacks and drinks. At this moment, they do not allow customers inside, but you can wait/sit outside or wait in the car. Customers can order ahead on the app, and they will delivery the food to your car. I love getting their asha mala noodles, and honey bacon glazed chicken bites. Nice little Boba Tea shop. Went around 5pm and it was quite busy with a short wait for a table. I had the Hibiscus tea and it was great. The staff are very friendly even though they were obviously busy. They were playing music which was a little too loud for the staff to actually hear people's orders clearly. My wife and I decided to come by for food. We have ordered delivery in the past and wanted to try this place dine in. We walk in to a warm greeting and then as soon as we are about to order we are told they are closed? Mind you the open sign is on and we made it in before they're actually closed. I pointed this out to the lady at the register and all she said was "do you want to order drinks?" NO! I want to order off the full menu since I made it into your establishment during business hours. Wow! Such a great boba cafe! Not only was their boba drinks amazing but the food isn't just regular cafe food. We had the popcorn chicken shareable, pork belly bao buns, bacon fried rice and the mala noodles. With winter melon tea and a Okinawa sugar latte with boba. First of all, the fried rice is huge! You can definitely share it and it pairs nicely with the popcorn chicken. My favorite was the bao buns, at first I was skeptical because it had powdered sugar on them? But I took a bite and it is probably one of the best things I've ever ate. The bao was soft, the pork belly tender and the the sweetness from the little pop of sugar was a nice relief from the pork. I am so excited another boba place opened up! The decor is very cute inside and there's plenty of seating. I really feel like the owners were very brand oriented from the logos on the straws, the cups, and the seal which is very neat. Looks like they have attention to detail. I had ordered the Taiwanese popcorn chicken, the popcorn chicken bento, the gyoza, red bean matcha latte, grapefruit green tea, and the signature milk tea with boba. The gyoza is just ok and nothing too special, same with the signature milk tea. The signature milk tea seemed to lack the strong tea flavor but was still good, tasted fresh, and the tapioca was not too hard nor too chewy and nicely sweetened. The stars were the Taiwanese popcorn chicken, the Taiwanese popcorn chicken bento, the red bean matcha latte and the grapefruit green tea. The popcorn chicken is really good!! Nicely seasoned and flair is on point. I really like that they use a lot of basil as well since a lot of other places tend to not use much. The bento is even better because they give you 2 sides, rice, and a seasoned egg. It's a good portioned meal if you're hungry. The red bean matcha latte is so good! The strong unsweetened matcha with the milk and sweetness from the red bean on every sip is genius! The grapefruit green tea is so refreshing! Since a year ago, Artea is back to dine-in! There are some plastic screens to separate the cashiers from the customers. Masks are still required though. Note that prices have increased as distribution has complicated post-COVID, though this is consistent with every bubble tea vendor. I will say that Artea is still one of the better if not the best deal in bubble teas for San Antonio. You really can't go wrong with the drinks here. As a lactose intolerant person, I really appreciate the non-dairy milk teas (marked on the menu). For my drink recommendations, I tend to go for the winter melon loose leaf tea, the passion fruit tea, Formosa oolong tea, and the Yakult green tea. If sweetness and ice aren't your thing, you can customize those levels in every non-specialty drink. My go-tos for the snacks are the honey glazed chicken bites and the Taiwanese popcorn chicken meal. the honey glazed chicken is basically upgraded Panda Express orange chicken - succulent, breaded chicken doused in sweet lemon glaze/sauce. I've also had their candied bacon which is thick, crispy bacon covered in spices. Good for a light snack. Not horrible, but was nothing to rave about. The menu had very unique drinks on it though so definitely worth revisiting to explore the drink menu. The honey bacon glazed chicken was deliciously sweet but I couldn't taste any bacon (which was the main reason I ordered it). Artea stays so true to the taste and philosophy of Taiwan. It is SO rare to find boba shops in America where they don't overload their drinks with processed sugar, additives and powder. I tried their wintermelon green tea on my first visit. I like 0-30% sugar and from light to no ice in my drinks. I was trying to order one of their specialty drinks (the wintermelon basil seed one) but they didn't allow sugar/ice adjustments with that drink because it ruins the recipe. Although the wintermelon green tea wasn't disappointing, it was pretty good. On my second visit, I had their formosa oolong tea which was incredibly good. If you like teas strong and in its barest form, I really recommend giving the formosa oolong a try. I had a taste of their popcorn chicken as well. It is SO delicious - even made to perfection. They don't over-salt the chicken and they are very generous with their fresh basil leaves. Coming from the Dallas metroplex, I can confidently say I haven't found a boba place even there that is as authentic as Artea. I am definitely coming back to try their taro drink (which is made with REAL taro and not powder). In summary, I love this place - it's my new go-to spot. I have yet to be disappointed by Artea. It was cardio day so I decided to jog to Artea, which is 4.6 miles to and back home. Lime Bomb: Limey, sugary and refreshing. Exactly what I need on my walk back home. I want to try all of the Gua Bao: I could taste the texture from the photos and I wasn't disappointed, very good quality. However, I wish a different sauce is used because the pork belly sliders have the sweet sauce. I was expecting the Gua Bao to be more savory than sweet. Next time I'm going to ask for another sauce (if optional) and if not then I'll ask for the meat to be naked. Yaki Udon Noodles: Tastes exactly as it looks, seriously made me super duper happy. It's savory without taking away the attention of the noodles. Chicken Popcorn: Very salty, I could only have 5. I don't cook with salt so this was overly intense for my palate. However, I still recommend for regular salt eaters. I'll be crumbling these into a salad for lunch and plain white rice for dinner. read more

Noodles were good - real, cooked right, chewy. Popcorn chicken has a 5 spice flavor. Served with deep fried basil leaves. Had a Sri Lankan black tea and Hibiscus - both iced. Very clean and fresh. Ordered the Okinawa milk tea, pork sliders, and popcorn chicken. The food I ordered was ok, nothing great but pretty good portion size for the popcorn. They Saran wrapped like 3 layers the box, which it turn kept all the heat in and moist out the interior from the steam thus made the chicken soft...why? Pork belly on sliders definitely needed a marinade and slowed cook a lot more. As for the milktea...it was plain whole milk and black sugar syrup, and barely any of it...I'm sorry being a boba shop please don't cheat your dear local customers. Okinawa is mainly a black base tea then you add your desired creamer/milk. Even though the spot was packed, there was lots of spacious seating available with little to no wait times for food and drinks. They have a beeper system so they don't have to yell your name. Oh my this has become our favorite Taiwanese cafe and boba tea bar in San Antonio after just one visit. I dm'ed the owner to please open one in Houston if they ever expand! A friend and I went here just the other day and we both loved it. She got a milk tea and I got the lime bomb and we both enjoyed our drinks. I got mine with boba and the boba was the perfect texture. My only complaint is that the drinks are kind of expensive. Mine was 5.75 which came up a little bit over $6 on the receipt. We also got the dumplings and honey chicken and the honey chicken was way better than I thought it would be. I thought it'd be too sweet but it was perfect and the sauce on the dumplings was a little too much soy sauce but it still tasted great. The service was so nice and welcoming. They even gave us free samples of their fried Oreos which weren't the best but it was the thought that counted! Came in on a weekday and it wasn't that crowded. It's a small place with a nice modern theme on the inside. There are several menus placed on the walls so you can take a look at their items. The menu is pretty overwhelming at first, but they have a screen which shows customer favorites and that helped to decide which items to choose. The customer service was good. There aren't many places to sit so if it's crowded definitely expect to get your food to go. I got the pork belly don, chicken teriyaki don, and the Okinawa kokuto boba. Everything was delicious and flavorful. The pork belly was melt in your mouth and the boba was creamy goodness. I would like to come back soon to try other items off the menu soon. read more
