I grew a lot from this class, and received specific feedback and guidance for my needs. I loved the format of this class and how it challenged me to take on complex subject matters. Every week she learns something new: new styles, materials, and techniques. Sometimes they focus on painting, other times on sculpture or different forms of art. Katia and Sara have both been her teachers, and she has felt happy and supported with all of them. Like with many activities at this age, it took a couple of weeks for her to fully adjust and feel familiar with the environment but consistency made a big difference. As parents, we appreciate seeing her come home excited and proud of what she created. It is easy to notice how much she has progressed over time and we get very excited when we see her project. We also appreciate the communication style of the school. They provide a high-level overview each week of what the kids will be working on, which keeps parents informed without overwhelming us with too much information. On the administrative side, tuition payments and renewals are simple, and the staff has always been friendly and helpful whenever we have had questions or needed help resolving any mistakes on our part. We also love the location. Depending on the day and who is with me, it is easy to wait nearby at the library, a coffee shop, or a restaurant while class is in session.

This review is based on my experience with the instructional classes at the studio…read more I'm not an artist but I strive to live in touch with creativity. For a long time, I've made art but struggled with feeling like what I was doing was really creative. Michael, the owner and instructor at the studio, has transformed the way I think about the creative process through the avenue of figure drawing. His classes are the most meaningful part of my week. If you're looking for an instructional class focused on technique for drawing more accurately, this may not be the right place for you. Instead, the classes offer a new connected way of living--engaged with beauty both around you and internal to you. So much of the class is about unlearning not just how you draw but also how you value the creative process. It is the most challenging class I've ever taken and there's no amount of brute force I can apply to get it other than trusting the process and the instructor. Nonetheless, as frustrating as it is, there's nothing else I do that is more rewarding. It takes a lot of effort to strip away your aesthetic value system to get at the core of what you find beautiful, but if the result is a more meaningful existence, then that investment is priceless. Some practical aspects of the instructional sessions. Michael strives to provide only the best models to inspire you not to capture their poses but to feel something in yourself. The medium is stick charcoal and newsprint is available cheaply at the studio. The class is a lengthy commitment of 20 weeks of three-hour sessions but is highly structured and builds on successive lessons. Michael also allows you to make-up classes. Although there is a high upfront cost, for the hours of instruction and model time spread out over the weeks, it's a steal.

Julia, the owner, is not only an incredibly talented artist but also a truly gifted teacher. She's so patient and encouraging with the kids, and our daughter has learned so much under her guidance. Each class is thoughtfully structured into two parts -- drawing/painting and then clay molding -- which keeps the kids engaged and excited. The mix of ages has also been wonderful, as our daughter (one of the youngest) learns so much from watching the older students. We couldn't recommend Young Art Studio more for any child who loves to create and express themselves through art!

Im off to college now but I will always be back to visit. A huge part of why I love this place is so much is because of the teacher, Julia. She is the most supportive and kindest people I have ever met. She will give you the best advice on how to approach a drawing and she knows exactly how to help you grow as an artist. She celebrates every little improvement and reminds you that mistakes are just part of the process. Over the many years I have been at this studio, I have learned so many new techniques. But most importantly, I learned to believe in myself because Julia always believed in me, even when I doubted myself. One of my favorite memories is of a black and white drawing I did of a girl. I was scared to start it at first because I didn't have the confidence. I didn't think I was capable of making it look good but Julia encouraged me to just try it because she believed I could. I trusted her and I'm so glad I did because that drawing turned out amazing. It's one of my favorite pieces to this day. I'm so grateful for everything Julia has done for me. Thank you for believing in me and helping me grow. You've made such a big difference in my life. Truly the best teacher and friend I could ever ask for. I love you so much Julia.

The class itself was fun! We basically just messed around with clay for the 1.5 hours, layering cut outs and playing with texture. Baking took 30 minutes, and then assembly another 30. There were tons of colors, shapes, and tools to try out. There was also a birthday party there, so if you're interested in an event, this seems like a good place. Sophie let us know that we're allowed to get drinks / snacks from next door, then bring it back to eat in the lobby area by the window. The workshop seems like a lovely community space. Seems like they have events every month - Nov they'll have a free zine workshop and in December they'll sell mini wreaths. There's tons of other artsy things in there. My one suggestion for the class - it would have been lovely if there had been more pliers for assembly. I think that the shortage was the main bottleneck. The earrings look simple to put together, but because we were new and the pieces seem so fragile, it took us quite a bit of time.
