One of the last "True" Op Shops that I have discovered is tucked away at the foot of the Dandenongs…read morein Upper Fern Tree Gully. While the suburb itself really doesn't have anything "Upper" to offer, this little gem still holds the old values of the good old-fashioned op shops. You wont find uppity staff, overpriced clothes or other tragedies here. Most of the clothing is under $10, and the range is pretty good. They have a large range of homewares aswell, and these are all affordable and, depending on the donations of course, in good nick. Even if you don't find anything worth picking up, PWP is a good example of what op shopping used to be like before they were all plundered and turned into "Recycled Boutiques".

This frustratingly nameless vintage and retro clothing shop somehow manages to source a fantastic…read morecollection of second hand clothing. Barely more than a large cupboard of windows, this shop is what the op shop of your dreams would look like. Neatly ordered dresses, skirts, pants, jackets, shoes, ties and the odd retro toy or ornament frame the space except for the makeshift dressing room, made from long and heavy curtains strewn over a rail. The staff are often young and talkative, which is nice if you're in the mood, and there's a refreshing absence of hard sell. Eftpos isn't always available so it's best to come prepared with cash, just in case, and the prices are what you'd generally expect for a retro store. Overall, it's small and easy to browse, and whoever sources the clothes has a really great eye for it.

This is the best local "video" store I have ever had. Video Vision is situated on Carlisle Street…read morein St Kilda and has the best selection of DVD's possible. How I know this is because I have a test. I am a huge film lover and there was a film I watched when I was younger called "Don's Plum" and have never found a copy since due to the fact it had a very limited release as it was boycotted by actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire as the whole film is in black and white and is overexposed. I actually really liked it and no DVD store has ever had it, let alone heard of it. Until now. Not only did they have it in, the "film buff" behind the desk told me the history of the film and gave me recommendations on other films I probably hadn't seen. This is the nature of the store and is understandable due to the fact there are sections dedicated to "100 films you have to see before you die" (made by the staff) and "Highly recommended" (again by the staff) but due to their undoubtedly good knowledge it makes selecting films easy. If that's not your thing there are also sections categorized by Director's name, Academy Award winners, Stoner flicks, Chick flicks, Arthouse, Foreign, Nostalgic, Cult and more! It's a film lover's paradise. It's almost too good at times as they have films that aren't registered to Australia's region and will only work on some DVD players. Again, this just shows they are committed and the one time they didn't have a film I wanted, they were happy to order it in and probably took it quite personal.

Promptly I was shown the clothes I asked about plus a couple of nice alternatives...The fit and quality of this stuff far exceeded my expectations! This can be hard to find for a slim guy when everyone tells me it's 'slim cut' - most of the time its not. The sales guy was great about asking when/where I would be wearing the gear...30mins later I walked out with an amazing Winter coat and suit. Will definitely tell my friends (guys & girls) about this gem. Heard they're on Chapel St as well. Highly recommended.

They have absolutely everything in this store. I'm a comic book enthusiast, so the comic book section excited me a bit. Unfortunately, the majority of their comics are wrapped in plastic so free loading in the store is out of the question (darn!). If you're into the more Asian side of comics, they have a pretty good manga section too with all the essentials (maybe missing a lot of the obscure mangas, but Minotaur is a good place to start if you're just getting into it). They also have a wide collection of films, posters, books, shirts, and even games and toys. There are random knick-knacks too so it is always fun to come in and just take a look around even if you aren't purchasing anything. Cute things I have found: a stuffed animal of the pig TonTon from Naruto, SuperMario Brothers Mushroom Backpack, Star Trek Bobbleheads, Hello Kitty Monopoly, and multi-coloured Domos! 2 stars off because the prices are pretty steep... but even if you aren't purchasing anything, I would recommend you stopping by just to take a look around.
