Walking onto campus, I was immediately greeted with a smile and positive attitude from Ms. Ruth. Despite how many students attend the school, she made an effort to get to know us and remember our names. Ms. Ruth was recently promoted to Administrative Assistant for the ADN Program, and it is so well deserved! It was truly a full-circle moment when she was the one who emailed my letter of acceptance for the second portion of the program. Since I don't see Ms. Ruth at the front desk anymore, I usually stop by the Admin Office just to say hi and ask how she and her family are doing. Nursing school can be stressful and challenging, but Ms. Ruth has made me feel heard and supported since the very beginning. Thank you as well to Professor Marion German, Professor Leah Baltazar, and Dr. Dela Cruz for taking the time to meet with my cohort regularly to listen to our concerns and provide support since we started the program. Having such a supportive administrative team while beginning the ADN program has been invaluable to my learning experience at MFSON.

I am pleased to share that meaningful progress has been made in several areas since my last review, most notably in leadership and faculty. At the same time, I believe honest and constructive feedback about areas still in need of improvement is essential for the continued growth of the program. The school's decision to bring in new leadership has made a noticeable and positive difference in the student experience. Dean Calvillo, in particular, has quickly become one of the most impactful additions to the program. From a student's perspective, she is a genuine asset -- approachable, forward-thinking, and clearly invested in improving the direction of the school. It is worth acknowledging that Dean Calvillo inherited a difficult situation and has demonstrated both professionalism and determination in addressing it. She faces an uphill climb, but the progress she has made in a relatively short time is encouraging. Students notice when leadership cares, and she has made it clear that she does. Similarly, the Director has contributed meaningfully to keeping the program operational and moving forward. While his specific scope of influence over the RN program may vary, his dedication to the institution has not gone unnoticed. Two individuals in particular deserve special recognition for the exceptional support they provide to students on a daily basis. Shannon H. Shannon is, without question, the backbone of the Bakersfield campus. She is not a professor, but her role in the day-to-day functioning of the program is invaluable. Whenever students have questions, need guidance, or encounter administrative hurdles, Shannon is the person who steps in and gets things done -- reliably, efficiently, and without complaint. Her institutional knowledge and genuine willingness to help make a real difference in the student experience. She is one of the school's greatest assets. Professor Kirsten T. Professor T. exemplifies what nursing education should look like. With well over a decade of emergency room nursing experience, she brings a depth of real-world clinical knowledge that enriches every interaction. What sets her apart, however, is not just what she knows -- it is how freely and generously she shares it. She makes herself available to students at all hours, is never dismissive, and approaches every question with patience and genuine enthusiasm for teaching. Crucially, she teaches students to truly understand the material, not simply memorize it -- a distinction that will serve her students throughout their entire nursing careers. Professor T. does not gatekeep knowledge, and that open, collaborative spirit is exactly what this program needs more of. The recent additions to the faculty have been a very welcome development. While it would not be appropriate to single out individuals who are still new to their roles, the overall impression is a strongly positive one. This wave of new hiring, combined with improved leadership, gives genuine reason for optimism about the future of the program. In the interest of providing a balanced and honest review, I feel it is important to address areas where the student experience has fallen short. The following concerns are shared not to single out individuals unfairly, but because unresolved issues at the staff level have a direct and ongoing impact on students. Unhelpful and Discouraging Interactions There two members (A. Cruz, Dean Sam) of the staff whose conduct toward students has been consistently discouraging. Specifically, students have repeatedly encountered interactions characterized by a dismissive attitude, an unwillingness to assist, and a lack of constructive communication. When a student seeks guidance and is met with negativity rather than support, it creates a barrier to learning and undermines confidence at a critical stage in their education. Nursing school is demanding enough without students feeling that certain staff members are working against them rather than with them. Professionalism, accessibility, and a basic willingness to support students should not be optional they are foundational expectations of anyone in an educational role. Prior Leadership Concerns Concerns raised in my previous review regarding certain administrative leadership remain unresolved. The environment created under prior leadership left students without adequate support, clear communication, or a sense that their concerns were being heard.

My daughter was part of the COVID class so she transferred in her junior year and had classes mainly on campus(which she loved). She commuted to/from school/home. She had early enough classes that she did not really have to fight for parking. My son is currently a sophomore there and has been living on campus. He was lucky to find Wonder roommates and friends and lived in locations on campus within walking distance of everything. So far it is hard work but he is enjoiyhis time at State. There are so many great clubs, organizations, and opportunities around campus. The trolly system is pretty good as well and a great means of transportation around San Diego if they do not have a car. My daughter graduated in 2024 and really enjoyed her time there. Very lucky to have them both near by for school. Great campus!!! I have had ample opportunities from SDSU for my future career and also to meet friends for life. The campus is absolutely stunning and has its own farmers market once a week in the main square area. They also have so many events on campus that they do an amazing job organizing. I think one thing that really stuck out to me, especially being out of state, was that I immediately felt at home here. I joined Greek life, student orgs, and had such an amazing experience where I was able to contribute to my personal and professional development. I will forever thank this school for everything it's given me and grateful that I've found a place. The one thing I will say, however, is that I lived in Chappy and that freshman dorm building needed help. But at the same time I was in the most social building, so that allowed me to meet the friends I have now!

There are also several healthcare programs like EKG Tech and Pharmacy Tech. Keep in mind that these courses only prep you for required exams or are refreshers of you are already in the industry. When you finish all the required courses in a program, you are awarded with a certificate of completion. In my opinion it's worth getting a certificate from a known school like SDSU. I just finished my accounting certificate; I'm so glad that I was able to take their accounting program online as I work full-time during the day. Now I have something to put on my resume and move up the pay ladder. :) Most of the programs are non-credit and are non-transferable to 4 year degrees. They have an Open University Program where you crash credit courses in the first day. Those courses are much more expensive but still cheaper than going to school as a full time or half time student. Never tried the program, though, but it's a good option for anyone who wants to knock some units off and or transfer to a 4 year/2 year university. I will say that all the courses aren't cheap and you have to pay out of pocket for the most part. They're still cheaper than some other places that's for sure. Overall I recommend checking them out.

West Commons has been at SDSU for the longest time, and it hasn't changed in the past 4 years while i've been a student here. There's a resource center for students, Olive Oil (a sandwich/panini spot), and a U.S bank. There's also a second floor which consists of classrooms for students and restrooms. This place has a interesting smell to it, I just feel that it definitely needs renovation some point, it's old, smells funky, and the tables are very sticky. I got the eggplant sandwich and it was delicious. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I just wish it was cheaper since it was $8 for just a sandwich. The Aztec Market is considerably smaller than the East Commons location and obviously doesn't offer a wide variety of drinks and food but if you're going there with the intentions of buying a sandwich and a drink, you'll find what you need. Its also great that there is almost no wait time at this location. The Starbucks here is actually decent, I have no complaints. I've ordered iced coffees and shaken iced teas from this location and they always come out good. The service is also nice and quick. There is not a lot of seating inside due to the size of the place but you will most likely find somewhere to sit down outside. Overall, this is a tiny bit better than East Commons. The prices are still a bit high but the Olive Oil Cafe is honestly serves the best tasting food on campus.
