I have never had such strong customer service and great communication skills as I did when I worked with AF Bank. I decided on a Friday night to buy a house, a realtor that uses AF Bank connected me with Jim Wallace, and I had tentative approval by Sat afternoon and letters of approval for the seller by Sunday. Jim called me on weekends, in the evening and had his team email or text me routinely. They walked me through signing the docs electronically and reminded me when I hadn't finished a task. I close on my house today, just 3.5 weeks after starting the process. I attribute my successful transaction to Jim and his team. Thank you! read more

They spoke to us as though they were going to maintain and service our loan, but less than three weeks after closing, they sold it to a company embroiled in lawsuits for unfairly handling homeowners by not applying their payments to their loans and adding "insurance" without permission. First this review is not branch specific it is for the corporate management of AFB. This has got to be the worst bank out there. They say they are pro military and love their service members? Not true. We have a credit card through AFB and their customer service is a third party in the middle east. First of all how are they supporting the US military by hiring a company that is offshore?? Secondly, my husband was in Desert Shield and Desert Storm and I can assure you that that area did not want US troops over there, and in talking to younger military members this has not changed, yet AFB had a brilliant idea to hire and pay those same people. They just had a holiday, MLK day......I have to say at least 99 if not 100% of those people over there have absolutely NO idea who MLK even is. That's an American holiday. So the point being they are taking profit from the military service members who have accounts at their bank and sending that money over seas. That is extremely disrespectful and disgusting!! I just really would like an answer from corporate why this is even remotely a good idea to not support the US by having all of the customer service here, but sending money over there that members are paying the bank here in the US. Those offshore people are rude, they are argumentative and have never fixed an issue (and we've had many with this card!!) that we have called about. BUT if you call AFB customer service (US based) they advise you to call the number on your card because they have limited access to the credit card accounts because, guess what, that's what they are paying the middle east to do! My experience with this bank has been beyond horrible. My father, 95, opened an account there when it was Army National in the 60s (or earlier.) He gets his disability, pension and social security in there. Because he is 95 I have taken over the finances, but even with power of attorney, they will not let me assist unless I bring him to a branch to sign papers, and that's a lot for him now. On the phone, they won't even give him his balance or let us see if a payment has processed because he can't remember a "code word" for the account. He has his social security, his military ID etc. The code word is buried with my stepmother, who had advanced Alzheimer's and died in 2023. They REFUSE to help us and the branch closest to us - a distance from his home, is ony open 9-3 Monday - Thursday. Great hours, if you actually work AT THE BANK. So much disrespect and red tape for a Silver Star vet with tens of thousands in their bank (at least we think so.) They will also not allow him an online account unless he comes in. I would give zero but not an option. The customer service is horrible!!! I had fraudulent charges, disputed and cancelled my card, was told a new card would be issued. Skip 3 weeks now, no card, called and was told a new card wasn't issued!? Then told it could take 3 weeks to get a new card issued!? It was suppose to have already been reissued! This is the worst bank I have ever dealt with. 1 - Their app is clunky and crashes have the time. Their chat feature is horrible. 2- I can't tell you how many times it blocks me when I'm trying to do something, and I have to call to unlock my account. 3- I've transferred money only to have it never show up or have to do so all over again. 4- Their customer service is subpar. 5- Trying to do anything with them is always a huge inconvenience! 6- They just finally now added Apple Pay in 2021...way behind the times! 7- Finally, I ordered checks in November. Terrible Customer Service, Took me 5 hours and 3 attempts on the phone to cancel a card that was stolen. Their hours are limited for being a "ARMED FORCES" bank and members are all over the World they only are willing to assist you during their convince. Rarely gives out loans to any of its members because you dont have a credit history, yet they are recommended to recruits of the military. Military needs to stop sponsoring them at the recruit check and say Navy Federal or Nothing because Armed Forces is the worse bank I've dealt with. read more

Not noticing anything wrong with a bank is a relatively mundane standard for a financial institution claiming to help armed forces members. That said, I have been dealing with AF Bank since 1974 with a simple checking account that receives my military retirement pay. Apparently the terms of the checking account changed although I was never notified and I am experiencing a monthly service charge effective until my 3 month average balance exceeds $5000. Given my long history with this bank I asked that thee fees be waived. AF bank response was a flat NO! So will be changing to a no hidden fees bank - one with less predatory greed. read more

The money went into my account the next day and then was removed, so I called to find out why and was told I have to wait a week for the money to be available. How can a bank do that like people don't have plans or bills to pay. As soon as my check clears I will be pulling all my money out and be done with this bank completely. read more

If you join the U.S. Army, you may very well be pressured/forced to have your direct deposits go to AFB when you are in reception if you do not come with a completed DD form. Even if you have one (I did), you might still be convinced to open an account. Don't do it. Absolutely do not do it. They will fuck you. And no, you will not like it. Storytime: When I was at PLDC, or whatever they renamed it to after 2004 or 5 or whenever they renamed it (I think it was Warrior something or other), they took everything from you and you did not have time to do anything anyway because you were sequestered at camp for the duration of the course. Anywho, I got back and check my statement and some unabashedly bogus charge (only one) for the month was on there on my AFB account. I say "what the fuck," and go on with my life as it was only like 30$ or so. Next month: same charge, same assholes. I call said assholes. Number that only takes messages. I call at another time, thinking that maybe the HST may have lead to non-office hours; phone # that only takes messages. I call AFB and they inform me that I will have to pay 50$ or 60$ or some bullshit amount for them to "investigate" the claim. What? I am telling you that it is bogus; stop them from charging me for something they are not providing me services for. Apparently they could not do this. I said, "%$&$%^ers." Next month the charge is on there again. I immediately changed my direct deposit to go to First Hawai'ian Bank, emptied my account all the way to cero, and waited. Next month: same charge taking my account, the one I will not be using ever again, into the negative. They charge me the additional penalty for overdraft; whatever that was. Next month: same charge into my purposefully remaining open account again. Another penalty for overdraft and they finally close my account. Not nearly as much as these scam artists disguised as a legitimate banking institution allowed the other scam artists to steal from me, but enough to brighten my mood. A couple of years back they sent me a letter proclaiming that I owe them 100+$; I chuckled. I believe I talked to one of them either right after they finally shuttered my account and shortly after the relatively recent letter, or one or the other. They asked me to pay and I told them I will never pay them. Never. Specifically, there is nothing you can do to me that would make me pay, especially since this was a matter of principle. I'm sure people say this about banks a lot. But Armed Forces Bank is ACTUALLY the WORST. You can't make loan payments online, which means you have to call customer service. Well then it takes 30+ minutes just to finish the transaction because it takes anywhere from 10-15min just for them to answer the damn phone. And you'd think you could bypass their automated voice system to speak to a real person, well think again. The automated voice system will just repeat what it's asking over and over and over. Then they'll put you on hold way too many times & for no good reason, which results in the whole thing taking WAY longer than it should. The online banking is dated and doesn't allow much access to actually utilize your Armed Forces account with other outside banks. Also, if you apply for a loan, DO NOT let them tell you your loan is approved "as long as you set up an allotment" from your paycheck, if you're active duty military this is in fact ILLEGAL for them to do. All in all I would never recommend this bank to ANYONE and as soon as our loan is paid off all accounts will be CLOSED and ties will be severed. NEVER again will we do business with them. read more

The only reason I gave AF Bank a 1 b/c there is not Zero-0. I cashed in savings bonds and got a cashier's check, I deposited in to my main checking acct. Then, a week later AF Bank said it was a fraudulent ck and wouldn't pay it. I said "what" this check is from their bank! Really, u gonna say it's fraudulent! I hate to go against all the other reviews but I haven't really had a bad experience with this particular bank but I'm sure my circumstances are different. I left the Marines with extremely horrible credit, not just fair or poor credit but straight up grotesque credit think low 400's. the only choice I had was secured credit cards. I started with a $300 deposit, then moved it up to $1700 and finally $3000 limit but you have to deposit your own funds, I have never had any problem with my credit card, the only problem is when making payments it sometimes takes 3 to 5 business days to clear into account and long wait times when calling customer service but besides that no problems read more

Been a customer of Armed Forces Bank for 10 years now, but I'm finally fed up with them. The service has been slowly declining for years and it's currently abysmal. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't considered great when I joined, but the one thing that kept me with them (the 24 hour human customer support line) isn't even available anymore. Even the online banking chat customer support is limited hours, so if something goes wrong at an inconvenient time, you're screwed until the next day. Additionally, the online banking lacks some basic features (like the ability to wire money to other banks) and the $25 flat rate wire transfer fee is pretty ridiculous. I understand that nearly all banks charge for wire transfers, but a bank that's supposed to serve the Armed Forces charges nearly the top rate so they can serve their bottom line. Add that onto the fact that not many bases have AFB branches and they still charge ATM fees unlike many of the other military focused banks, and I question why I've stuck with them this long. Everybody's situation will be different, but that's my experience with them. Hopefully it will help some boots make a more informed decision when it comes down to choosing a banks. read more

Armed'ForcesBank is the WORST bank to bank with. Granted this is the bank I had while serving so my benefits still go there but im just going to close it and go on with my day after 12 years. Ain't no way y'all separated the dispute department from the bank "to better handle chargebacks" when 1.Nobody can ever get in touch with a human. You will hear someone speaking Spanish then the dial tone. 2. If someone does answer they don't know anything. Last time I was told to fax my dispute form and evidence and call in 5 days so that it's in the system and that there was no other way to send the documents . Today an irate Derek (employee 1070850)said none of that was true and that I needed to fax again and call the same day. He spoke over me and gave me the third degree as if I would lie about sending my documents the way I was instructed to or if I ever sent them at all. You would think I stole my own money and he was going to prosecute me for it. He wasn't trying to listen or ask me exactly what I did to better help me, but more so get me off the phone so he didn't have to do his job. If you're going to make it this easy for someone to steal from me and not do anything about it then I will take my business elsewhere and would advise anyone to do the same. read more

Lets just say i joined the army forced into this HORRIBLE BANK. Knew it was going to be bad but nothing i can do about it. Tried to $0 my account Charged me a returned fee and an overdraft fee amongst other fees. Called and talked to 3 different people trying to get the to give me my money to close my account. They did nothing. Next day another fee. Another call. finally told me that they returned the fees and my money was sent to another accout. Next week i receive a letter from a (third party) debt collection agency. (wtf) Next day received another letter saying the same thing. Called and they said they never returned any fees and that its my fault and that they cannot help in anyway. Got yelled at by a supervisor over the phone, said you need to figure out a way to send me a check or open my account back up and send me the money that i originally had in my account, She refused and said it was my fault. We have been customers of this bank for many years, We are retired military. Only one bank at fort Knox now, and it's only open till 4 weekdays, NO Saturday service/closed. The mobile app doesn't work correctly you cannot deposit with it. We are changing soon to another bank this is ridiculous. They need to get up to date, offer more services, better hours, free check's, no atm fees, cash back with card usage, fix the banking mobile app! Terrible bank. I opened my account several years ago as my Late Husband was a Retired Air Force Officer. We had a branch at Vandenberg Air Force Base. A few years later, they closed the branch at the Base with the nearest branch being at least several hours away. I had automatic deposits of part of my paycheck. Making other deposits were almost impossible as with mobile banking they hold the funds for over 7 days!!!!!!! No ATMs any where near me takes deposits. Now, lo and behold I get an email that said they were charging $10.00 a month service charge and now it is increased to $15.00 per month. What a slap in the face to the Military!!!! Shame on them. I started with AF Bank in 2001 and from 2001 until probably 2010 I was pretty satisfied with AF Bank. My satisfaction with this bank occurred from 2010 until 2021. Over a 24 year Army career, including many years overseas, we never had any problems with our checking account and I was always able to speak with a polite and knowledgeable customer service rep but that changed! Looking back on my 2 decade long experience I would say that the culture of the bank changed. I no longer believe that this bank is looking out for the "Armed Forces" and that they are more interested in charging fees. My breaking point was on a recent phone call in which the customer service rep was literally reading from a script to essentially tell me that fees and overdraft protection is based upon a computer algorithm. There is simply no humanity and no acknowledgement of the millions of dollars that have been deposited into my bank account for the past 20 years. I have been a customer of this bank since 1976. My parents estate, which also is a customer for the last 50+ years is considered by the bank as a "VIP customer" Having said this, since the bank consolidated its customer service department in Kansas City customer service has vanished. When calling about anything other than routine account questions, the automated system is unresponsive. Wait times to get a human being are excessive. When you do get an agent, they cannot answer your question and put you on a long hold for someone who may or may not be knowledgeable. For these reasons, I am taking steps to terminate my relationship with this bank. When my parents' estate settles I'll close their accounts also. The bank will never hear from us again. read more

STAY AWAY RUN FAST. My husband is a disabled vet we have a joint AFB checking account. When we first opened it a year ago they offered no way to make deposits with out going to a branch or mailing checks to them. My husband does have military pay he could have had signed up for direct deposit into the account but he already has it going into his USAA account and saw no reason to change. Needless to say we do not use the AFB account much only because it is a pain to drive 55 miles to the nearest branch. Recently I found out they now have mobile banking. We received a tax refund check which was made out to the both of us I thought great I can deposit into our AFB account. It was for more than the daily limit for mobile deposits so I had to call and have them raise the limit for 1 day. I was on the phone with the man from AFB for almost 20 minutes he can back on the line and said it was taken care of and I could make the mobile deposit. I deposited the check and it said they would receive it in 2 days. No problem I can wait 2 days (although my local bank only takes 1 day and they give you access to the 1st 200 of any deposit). I logged on to mu AFB account and saw no pending deposits so I called this morning and the man tells me that it will be on hold for 7 days. The money from this check is to pay our rent. I asked him if they could shorten the hold and he said NO I asked him If some how we could reverse the deposit he said no. When I asked him why there was a hold on a US treasury check he said all mobile deposit are subject to a 7 day hold. When I asked him why the person I spoke with yesterday did not tell me this he did not know. When I asked him why the mobile app did not tell me there would be a 7 day hold he did not know. I do know that when I had a local bank they would tell me prior to making the deposit that there would be a hold and how long it would be. They would tell me this before they accepted the deposit so I could choose to complete it or not. USAA also tells my husband if there will be a hold on his mobile deposit and how long it will be. then he can choose to make the deposit or cancel it. After this experience and the fact that they have crappy customer service and their website and mobile app seem like a high school kid designed them. (nothing against high school kids). I will get our money out when it is available close the account and stick with USAA and the local credit union for all our banking needs. On a side note We explained to USAA what happened with AFB they had us send them a copy of the tax refund check and fronted my husband the whole value of the check. once the money is available in AFB we will be wiring it to USAA read more

HORRIBLE customer service!!!! My debit card was either stolen or lost and when I called and asked about expediting a new one, they wanted to charge $50 to get it to me, of course I said no. The customer service representative said he would talk to a supervisor to see if they'd wave the fee as a courtesy, but they said it wasn't justified. Really?!?! My husband is overseas, we just moved to an area without a local AF bank and I have absolutely no way of getting money out of my account. I will be canceling my account with you guys! read more

We were at Edwards AFB waiting for it to open. The lady was cleaning the counter and said that she would be open in about 10 minutes. My husband only needed to cash a check. I had the check in my purse and was in a nearby area to wait. When I got back there already was a lady at the window and my husband told me that I should have left him the check. I wasn't gone that long. But, there was only one teller with the line building up behind my husband. The one cashier was dealing with a customer for 25 minutes. Not stating that my husband could go to customer service to get the check cashed. My husband has back problems that limits him to how long he can stand. 25 minutes is far too long. The second cashier did not show up until 10:20am, and did not open until 10:25am. With it just opening up there should be two tellers since there was such a long line forming. And it was retiree day for retirees to have access to Edwards. Please make certain that there are TWO tellers. read more

Have had this bank since 2009. This is the first time I truly need assistance from them for setting a wire transfer to pay my new apartment's deposit/1st month rent. 6 calls; First call wait time was 20 minutes to speak to a person, then 15 min to speak to a rep, and then 15 more min to speak to a "Specialist" in wire transfers. Everything went smoothly for a bit, and almost there, but then I needed some agreement paperwork signed, and I needed to do it within 1 hour or I'd have to wait till monday. I got the paperwork done, faxed, and emailed. Tried calling, but by the time I got through to a "Specialist", it was 2 hours, and I had to wait till monday. 2nd call (Monday) I called, waited fcking another hour to get ahold of a specialist, and then he sent me to his supervisor, and the damn supervisor said the agreement was never faxed, or in email records, so I needed to find the agreement paperwork, and send it again. Finally sent it and got a confirmation email that the fax was sent by a faxing service website. Called for the Supervisor, GOT HUNG UP ON after waiting 56 minutes. After just feeling that F you sucker punch, I tried calling again and waited another 40 minutes to get ahold of another specialist. This lady was nice, and did some work to actually look for my agreement paperwork. Took her roughly 10 minutes with me on hold. My process is not even done yet, and I have no definite answer for my new landlords on when I can send them the money that they really need for renovations of this old house. Seriously they need the help to help fix this houses water heater, washer, and upstairs renovations. This is my first time contacting customer service and I'm not impressed at all, 6 calls so far and not a one below 45 minutes. Good fcking 4-6 hours of my life on a phone . I'm pushing to send my 9/11 GI Bill BAH, and my part-time job stubs to my local bank, and try closing out afbank for good. *Note: Their overdraft fees and notifications are absolutely dreadful as it is. read more

Terrible bank that has zero convenience and actually charges you twice for using outside atms even though they only have about 5 atms nation wide. They will rearrange your charges to maximize overdraft charges. This bank is by far horrible, I have USAA and my boyfriend currently has AFB. Their customer service is just plain bad. You're looking at 30+ minute waits just to talk to someone on the phone, and trying to get a wire transfer is a job all on itself. My boyfriend tried getting a wire transfer over to my account in USAA, and they kept running him in circles, telling him they'll call back. By the time they called back it was too late to even get the money to my account, we have to wait till monday to try it all again. So thank you Armed Forces Bank, we will starve this weekend. I have never in my life dealt with such incompetent CSRs. I don't know if they're understaffed or what. But something needs to change. I HIGHLY recommend staying away from this bank. If you are military. go USAA, they are 24/7 help with immediate wires. Their CSRs are friendly and much easier to talk to without the run around and the wait times are non-existant. I had my debit card number stolen and charged over $400 from my account. Dispute department said it would take up to five business days to receive a provisionary deposit. I know in the past USAA has replaced funds immediately into my account. I recommend not to use his bank it will be switching back to USAA read more
