My partner, a severly immunocompromised patient, is currently in the ED while he waits to be…read moreadmitted to the oncology floor. It has been nearly three days, and I can say wholeheartedly that his care has been truly abysmal. There is little to no effective communication or strategizing between the various care teams he requires (oncology, infectious diseases, urology, etc). Decisions about his care have routinely been made by one care team without consulting the other. Worse, medications have been changed or discontinued without consulting or adequately examining the patient. When my partner was certain he had an abscess forming, the infectious diseases team decided to discontinue antibiotics without examining the affected area or conducting the relevant tests. Only after an MRI was ordered (more than 24 hours after the visit from infectious diseases) was my partner proven correct about the abscess. Antibiotics were continued only after our vigorous objections. While many of the ED nurses (and some of the doctors) have been excellent, the overall experience has been one of profound disorganization and mismanagement. Expect to languish here, especially if you are waiting for a bed upstairs.
