I'm calling it a gas station but it's also a convenience store. Grab a few items if you're about to head out on an adventure. The place is well lit at night. It was busy during the morning ritual of people stopping in to get coffee but they handle the busy hours well.

The young cashier smiled warmly, explained what all I could I get for breakfast and didn't make me feel stupid when I ask her to tell me what a Strammer Max is (ham and egg over buttered toast). When the cook brought out the food, she joked with me as well. It just makes a nice start to your day to be around such nice people. The cafe is small and clean. The decor I didn't quite understand. Walls were painted a cheery orange which didn't quite fit with the fisherman boat nets. Regardless, I appreciate that someone put a lot of effort into it. Gambling machines and a flat screen TV available. I could imagine stopping in to watch a soccer game while traveling through. Prices are quite reasonable for a gas station cafe. A latte macchiato will run you EUR2.60, slightly higher than the EUR2.30 you'd pay in most coffee shops in Hamburg. A good portion of Strammer Max with 3 slices of ham and 2 eggs costs EUR3.95. Restrooms are the Sanifair sort, so money spent on the toilet doesn't have to go down the toilet.

We were in the area due to Oktoberfest and decided to stay in Hallbergmoos as it was cheaper. After getting off the bus, we tried to follow the Google Maps directions we saved on the pictures on our phones to our hotel which basically led us to walk on the busy highway. We knew this couldn't be right since there was no side walk and there would be imminent death or dismemberment. Anyway we took a different route & ended up heading down an unlit pathway covered in trees the ended on a completely pitch black open field with a trail that looked like runners may run on during the day time. I was actually very nervous standing in pitch blackness and the greenery coverage made the path even more daunting as if someone would jump out and mug you at any moment. We hurriedly headed back to OMV which was pretty much the only thing open and the two ladies that were inside wo-manning the station came to our rescue. Through an awkward exchange of broken English and German they helped us determine what the right path was. Ten minutes later we ended up at the Hallbergmoos B&B Hotel and lifted our hands in thanks to our German saviors at the gas station. By the way, they also had some awesome munchies that were inexpensive that we grabbed just in case we couldn't find an open place to eat at almost 10 pm. So it's reasonably priced gas/petrol and a big supermarket style gas station market where you can find drinks and German breads and fruit and whatever else you need. During the day though Hallbergmoos is a gem and really doesn't give off that clank 'n shank kind of feel. So don't be scared, just don't rely on Google Maps if you don't actually have cell service in an international destination like Germany.

Besides gas, they offer all the German staples so you can make it through a Sunday when everything else is closed. They have lots of beer, gummy candy, chips, chocolate, sandwiches and pastries, and sausages packed in jars. Enjoy your day off!
