What you will get: 1. Friendly front office staff. Seem like…read morethis should be a given, but for whatever reason that's not possible at my home district (Yes, I'm here via permit from an apparently 'better' school district according to math and English scores) 2. Accessible Principals. Both the principal and the assistant principal greets students at the curb or by the gate. Mr. Fung is very approachable. 3. One-way immersion. I know on some materials it says two-way immersion, but a lot of EL kids here actually speaks Cantonese, not Mandarin, it's really not a two-way immersion, but the good news is there's no difference between one-way or two-way immersion (I've read this in a newer published report somewhere, wanted to cite it but now can't find it- may update later if I find it). Kids are sponges, they learn fast. One side note on this- My daughter was taken off the list after 'winning' the lottery from my home district. Their explanation to me was that my daughter does not speak good enough Mandarin to be in the program (yup). They told me to think of this as a 'gifted' program since curriculum will go faster. They've tested my daughter at the age of 4 all alone without parents present - she was able to say colors, shapes and various items in Mandarin. But that's not good for them, I honestly don't know what they're really expecting from a 4 year-old. My theory is that they just want to hand pick kids that already know Mandarin to be in their new program so that they 'the District' looks good. When I got a spot for her in Castelar, I cried - I'd no longer have to sent her to the dual immersion private school and this concluded my 2 years of running around to get her into a dual immersion program. Thank you for everyone at the LAUSD office and Castelar Elementary that made this happen. I really appreciate your team. 4. Great teachers. My daughter weren't excited about learning Mandarin when she was at the private school, but once she transferred into to Castelar, she really enjoys it - which puts this Chinese mom through the roof! 5. Appears to have a very strong Parent-Teacher group (FACES). Does community events and fundraising events very well. 6. Castelar school's principal made it a point not to have students sell anything - which I really appreciate. The fundraising events such as Halloween maze and movie nights were well organized by FACES and prices are extremely reasonable. 7. Castelar's Mandarin Dual Immersion starts in TK through 8th. They're starting their first 6th grade this year - Yay!!! 8. Music program through Education through Music; Theater program through their new Drama teacher starting this year. 9. 3 nearby/onsite after-school programs all with pickup services. 1) LA's Best - onsite, free, they do various 'clubs' and appear to have a good balance of academic, art, and physical activities. 2) Chinese school next door--next to the school, price reasonable, but their schedule is not in sync with LAUSD's schedule in terms of their semesters; they don't pick up the phone, you have to show up there during business hours to sign up. I speak Cantonese and still have a hard time understanding how their organization work, but there are many English speaking families there so it's not impossible. 3)Alpine rec center across the street - Didn't go there, no review, don't know pricing either.

If I could give this school a NEGATIVE FIVE STARTS --- I WOULD!…read more I'm just now taking the time to write a review on this school. My son (then in kindergarrten) had to go to this school cause I worked in DTLA and he got an exception to attend a school that was in the zip code of my job. YIKES. At the beginning he was OK, then by the time kindergarden ended, he kept delaying getting out of the car to go to school. Then we noticed kids crying at the start of every schools day. From the kicking and bruising the student did to him below the dining table, to the older students holding him down and telling the other kinder - 2nd grades to hit him...they tortured him. Finally, we noticed and offered him a chance to try another school at the start of first grade. He wanted to stay, but by the end of 2nd grade he asked to go to another school. The person who reviewed this school in 2009 is absolutely right. This school is in the middle of a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood. If you are not from their HOOD, you will be tortured. The principal didn't seem to think there was a problem. She kept insisting that she couldn't make kids play together if they int' care when I tried to tell her something was wrong. My son is now a 9th grader and still tells of being hit, kicked, pushed and terrorized daily. PARENTS, IT YOU HAVE A CHOICE ---- PICK ANOTHER SCHOOL! THIS ONE ISN'T IT!

El Rio Community School - The floor right outside the school is always messy. Causing people in wheelchairs to get stuck there and make it hard to get thru.

We feel like we struck GOLD finding El Rio. My son had attended Pacific Oaks in Pasadena, until the…read morepandemic shut everything down. We were looking to continue the progressive, emergent curriculum he had thrived in there. Then we found this new charter- A Waldorf inspired curriculum for a public school. AKA Free Waldorf but without all the weird Eurocentric culty stuff. That summer we attended a few zoom introduction and craft days and liked the vibe so we decided to try it out. He started TK in 2020 which was the school's first year of operation. I have to say after talking to many parent friends with kids in other schools, El Rio navigated that first challenging year so smoothly, it was a relief to be at there! I could write a book on the virtues of our kindergarten teacher, Ms. Alya. I won't go too long here, but what I will say succinctly is that she revealed to me what a teacher who truly cares, who truly connects, and teaches with love, is. My son is a BIG personality, and he tends to fill a room with it. At 5yrs old, after a year of quarantine, he had BIG emotions, everything a 0 or 10. In prior schools (we had moved across country when he was 4) I'd seen teachers work with him, who were very good, but always there was an underlying feeling that they were stretching their patience, refraining from rolling their eyes at him. Ms. Alya is on another level, like another VIBRATIONAL level. She exudes love and acceptance and genuine connection, appreciation for her students individual personalities. I wish she could be his teacher forever. The culture of the school is another major draw. It's unpretentious, economically and racially diverse, and harmonious. I know personally many parents who've left schools or districts that seem very desirable on the outside to come to our school. As well, we've met a lot of awesome parents with really hilarious weirdo and wonderful kids just like ours. It feels like a chosen family. The school administration has been a pleasure also. They work really hard, and really smart. There's actual common sense happening here. I'm so looking forward to next year, when my little one starts TK and both of my kids are at El Rio. P.S. my older child loves drawing in black and brown, and he gets to do it freely and with encouragement.

A truly special school that we feel so fortunate to have found. There are many reasons we…read moreappreciate El Rio, but one that grows daily is our appreciation for a no-tech/low-tech learning environment. As data mounts about the harms of pervasive tech in schools, it is simply not something we have to worry about.

Living in Los Angeles is usually a dream lifestyle most people can't afford and I've been blessed…read moreenough to have a smooth transition from the calm of hacienda heights to the hustle and bustle of L.a. That is of course, until it was time to enroll my child in school. Growing up in a beautiful area and attending great schools meant that I wanted nothing less for my child. As I searched for private and charter schools I was very unenthused about the service and curriculum they offered. A part of me wondered if I had made the proper choice by moving to the Los Angeles area. Finally, I looked into public schools but was skeptical. With all the negative publicity, safety concerns, and lack of funding for the public school system I was mortified but attended a small orientation anyway. Upon entering the campus I was guided by smiling staff to a library for the children and then seated. Waiting for the orientation to start I couldn't help but notice how organized and thoughtful the staff was. They offered headsets to Spanish speakers and a translator to answer their questions along with those of the parents of English speaking children. Once started the principle wasted no time in outlining goals, expectations, and benchmarks the school had for children and their parents. I was impressed by the PowerPoint and overall direction the school administrators were trying to take. As I continually drilled the principal with questions and concerns he did not budge. His enthusiasm and commitment assured me I was at the right place and that my princess would be obtaining the education she deserved and I expected. Overall, I'm so blessed to have stumbled on to such a rare gem. The campus and staff easily make this the right choice for parents in the Los Angeles area.

The teacher to student ratio can be a little better (when can it not), but I can definitely tell that the teachers really care about their students and go above and beyond for them - my little ones can vouch! It's not often you find such motivated teachers that go the extra mile. Not only are the teachers awesome, but also the various clubs (specifically the robotics club)! It gives my babies something to look forward to outside of the classroom. The administration is also very accommodating to all the needs that our family has. Enrolling my little ones here was a great decision and I can tell they're on the right path for their future when they graduate. Private message me for more details! Would love to share :)
