Back when I was young (not too long ago I hasten to add) and rather new to the Cardiff clubbing scene Aqua bar seemed the height of cool and sophistication. Everything about the place impressed me, the interior (Aqua themed), the older cliental, and especially being given free champagne (clearly for promotional purposes as the place had just opened).
However with age comes wisdom and I haven't been to this place on a night out in ages and there are a number of reasons why.
To start with the place is rather on the small side, if this place was just a bar it could perhaps just manage to get away with this. Aqua bar, however also claims to be a nightclub, a stupid idea in my opinion as there's clearly not much space to dance.
Secondly every time I've come hasn't been very busy, making the atmosphere chilled out rather than pumping (depends on what you want from a night out I suppose). The lack of patrons maybe due to the fact that this place is so easy to miss. Aqua bar is on St Mary's street but it's in a basement, so all you see from ground level is a door and small sign which passersby always appear to fail to spot.
By Cardiff standards I'll concede that the interior's pretty cool. There's blue and white LCD lighting, waterfalls, and plenty of fish tanks full of tropical fish (they really do take there aqua theme seriously).
If you haven't been to aqua bar (probably as you didn't know it existed), I'd say it's worth a visit just to experience the interior. However unless the ambience of the place has changed since my last visit, I don't you'll come back regularly. read more
