Are there really guys like Jean left in the world? Our washer is broken and I fully expected to get hosed by repair people, but Jean restored my faith in humanity. The diagnostic computer indicated a bad valve. We ordered it and Jean came back to install it. Washer continued to leak. He returned and figured out it was a bad seal and a messed up bearing. No longer an inexpensive fix. He agreed that it probably wasn't worth repairing. He bought the part back, tore up the check we had written, and asked for 16 bucks! He made three trips! He was on time! He's nice! Very tidy! If I were married to Jean, I might be upset about his extreme generosity. But he is a gem, and I sense he can fix about anything. Appliance Fix is the BEST there is when it comes to service. Steve is a one man show so he does get book up quickly. It's better to wait for 1-2 days for an appointment for Steve then taking a high risk at another company that may take advantage of you. I had used his service six month ago and again today for my Samsung dishwasher. He was on time within the 1 hour window appointment. With his expertise he was done in less than 45 minutes. Jean (who I'm pretty sure IS the entire Appliance Fixed operation) is awesome. I had what I'll just call an "unfortunate" experience with Sears Appliance Repair that left me with an inoperable stove/oven for two weeks. (More on that in my Sears review...) I called Jean's number, which he picked up at 6:30 pm on a Tuesday. He was able to come in the next day, not between 1 and 5 like those jokers at Sears, but between 1 and 2. Right on time, as expected. Unfortunately my oven ended up being a bigger problem than previously thought. Jean thought he had it figured out, ordered the part, came back two days later, and lo and behold, the oven still didn't work. At this point it was Friday afternoon, and I had company coming for dinner that night. When I mentioned this to Jean he made a serious effort to get my oven fixed on time, even running out twice to buy more parts while juggling his other appointments. I get that this is his job, but at this point it was 6:20 pm, Friday, and he could easily have told me that he needed to come back another day. Rather, he pulled through so that I could have my dinner party. One thing I wanted to point out, because it surprised me: Jean, at least in my situation, was actually more affordable than the Sears guy I was originally using! Sears wanted $129 to come out, plus parts. It's a flat rate, so that sounds like a good deal. Well Jean charged me a $60 service call fee, just to diagnose the problem, and after that, he ended up charging $70 in labor, in part because he had to run out of the house twice just to buy more things that needed replacing! So at the end of the day I paid the same rate Sears charges by going with Jean but I got a million times better service. So between supporting a local business, getting affordable service, and working with someone you feel like you can trust - that's what I'd call a win. read more

Appliance Fixed! is such a find. Jean is great person who runs a great business that provides a critical service with vast knowledge and a friendly demeanor. Jean has been our appliance repair person for three years. He has fixed our refrigerator which was freezing all of our food, he has cleaned out all the sand (with which my son had packed his pockets) out of our seized up washer, and he recently fixed our refrigerator - again. When the fridge leaked all over our wood floors, my husband was ready to buy a new one, to the tune of $1500+ for the counter depth, etc. I asked him to let Jean take a look and give his opinion about whether or not it was worth saving. Jean booked us for Saturday. He ran a little late and called us to let us know, and arrived exactly when he said he would. He immediately identified the problem as a small repair that would cost about 10% of what new fridge would cost. He also cleaned the intake on the back of the fridge -- which was running hot because of the gunk gathered on it. His opinion was that the fridge was definitely worth saving. The part was ordered and Jean returned a couple of days later at the appointed time. He installed the part, tested the fix (and corrected another problem), and made sure placement of our fridge was best for most efficient operation when he was finished. He did such a good job I asked if he could fix my car's AC. Unfortunately he doesn't work on cars, but he did give me a primer on how car air conditioning systems work, which will make it easier to understand what needs fixing at the mechanic. Meanwhile, he tolerated my very curious dog and loud children, and gave me the broken parts when he was done so I could show my husband the problem. I found Jean Gauthier on the web via Google. I just randomly called him after the "authorized" service provider for my Frigidaire refrigerator said they couldn't come for a week......Jean showed up 2 days after I called at exactly the time he said down to the minute. He was courteous, and polite and CHEAP!!! $145 for the initial service call + parts + the return service call later that day to install the new part!!! And, he picked up a lite bulb for the frig since he "noticed it was burned out".....super SUPER great guy. He used to be an aircraft mechanic and can basically fix anything. That said, although he spent considerable time, upwards of 3 hours, attempting to resolve the issue we determined that ultimately I needed a new machine. Out of those four visits, I was only charged one time. I even offered to pay him and he didn't accept. This is a rare, high level of service that you don't see these days. When you have a dying fridge time is of the essence in scheduling a repair. I called and was given a time for the next day, already a stretch but I get the timing issues. The time was set for 10:00am. At 10:20 I called and jean told me he had said "around" 10 and would be here in 10-20 minutes. At 10:40 I called another provider and got a firm commitment for a time (and a much lower service charge). While I was on the line, Jean called. Jean is a total professional and is absolutely great: he shows up when he says he will, is 100% focused on his job, he quickly diagnoses and fixes whatever is wrong, and charges a very fair and reasonable rate. He also regularly goes above and beyond the call of duty....which, in our case, has involved him jerry-rigging shims, at no cost to us, to make it easier for us and him to move our oversized, heavy, and tightly-situated fridge. Needed service In Walnut Creek, on aged gas dryer not heating that manifest on weekend (of course!). Checked Nextdoor, then Yelp, for recommendations. Many places got mixed-poor reviews. One guy recommended on ND isn't making service calls due to Covid. Contacted Jean (pronounced Gene) of Appliance Fixed! (www.appliancefixed.com, 925-238-6392 cell). He scheduled within 48 hours, came today (Tuesday) promptly. He readily identified the flame sensor as the culprit, but I had him also replace other items that are relatively cheap that might be subject to failing sometime soon. He found the belt was nearly shot; he replaced it and the solenoids. Overall, considering rates for services of any kind today, he was fair. Labor itself (implied, unstated hourly rate) seemed cheap; but there was a separate $75 service charge. Together, the two produced a labor charge I thought OK. Jean is fantastic! Reliable, knowledgeable and diligent. Can't ask for more. This was his second call to my house in 8 months. He fixed my refrigerator in January. He tried really hard, made 3 trips back and forth over several days trying to fix my old front load washer. He did warn me in the beginning that he thinks the washer has seen its better days but I begged him to try. And try he did. Unfortunately, in the end the massive repairs weren't worth it. I found Jean and Appliance Fixed through YELP. Thank goodness. One other large repair company (Excelcon) told me my 5 year old dishwasher needed so much work I might as well buy a new one. I called Jean in the afternoon and he came the next morning, exactly on time. No two hour waiting window here! He checked out my dishwasher thoroughly, and even gave me an easy cleaning tip so that the seals on the door would last longer. He diagnosed the problem, and it needed a new control board. Last week the landlord-supplied washing machine started making odd noises, like someone was firing up a chain saw when on the spin cycle. Uh oh! I highly recommend Appliance Fixed! and have used Jean's services for the last 4 years or so for issues with my washer and dryer. While doing some laundry we heard a bang and smelt a burning smell. So immediately turned off the washer. The next morning we also found out that unfortunately our water heater (next to the washer) had also stopped working! :-( I called Jean to look at the Washer and he also agreed to look at the water heater at the same time. As agreed he came the next day and on-time. He opened up the Washer and couldn't find any evidence of burning, he ran a few test runs and all looked OK and we can now use the Washer again. He looked at the Water Heater and found that the pilot assembly had a minor issue that meant it did not work all the time. He planned to replace this, however on a subsequent visit, Jean found that the Water Heater TRD (Thermal Release Device) was blown. Unfortunately Rheem would not replace the TRD as it had been replaced 2 years ago (they only allow one replacement). It turned out that the bang and burning smell was actually from the Water Heater, which I now have to schedule a plumber to replace. Jean is an extremely fair man and his number one priority is to keep his customers happy. As he could not fix the Water Heater, he actually decided not to charge me for his visits (not even the call-out fee). Thank you Jean - I will definitely be using your services again. read more

Jean is the best repair person I've ever met. Period. He recently repaired our ice maker, and here is a breakdown of the experience: 1. He greeted me at the door (on time!), asked me what the problem was, and didn't mind my curious dog. 2. He very articulately walked me through the troubleshooting steps he was taking to figure out the problem. Once he found the problem, he told me the solution -- in my case, I new ice maker was needed. He got a component of the system dusty, so he washed and dried it for me. 3. He came back several hours later with a new ice maker and installed it while explaining the process. 4. He told me what to expect over the next 24 hours and had me call him the next morning to make sure the installation went well. Jean is THE MAN! Our GE Profile Oven would no longer work in convection bake mode. We had a different repairman come out (NOT from Appliance Fixed!) and do a diagnostic and estimate. He said the circuit board needed to be replaced (part price est $460), and also suggested an optional additional replacement of the convection fan as it was noisy (part price est $200). With labor, total for both would run $820, but we wouldn't have to pay an additional $80 for a 2nd trip charge if we did it within the next 30 days. How generous. Having a very bad feeling about this estimate, we turned to Yelp for references and found Jean with Appliance Fixed! I'm happy to report that our oven is working again for a total charge of $115 ($60 service call charge plus labor), a savings of $705 from the first quote! Jean did thorough work, testing individual wires and removing the circuit board to determine that the problem was simply a wire to the convection element that had come loose, which appeared to have never been properly seated in the relay on the circuit board. He reattached it snugly, reassembled everything, and we are good to go - no parts required! He also said there is nothing wrong with our convection fan and did not see any need to replace it. What is sad is that if we had gone with the first guy's recommendation, it would have worked when he was done - since he presumably would have plugged the disconnected wire properly into the new circuit board when he installed it - but we never would have known that there was nothing wrong with the board and it didn't need to be replaced. Oh, and Jean also said that if the problem HAD been the circuit board, the part would have probably cost around $300-$350 (whereas the first guy quoted a parts price of $460). Jean is all that is described elsewhere here on Yelp. He has a quiet, friendly style, communicates well, explains what he is doing and educates you in the process. My GE Profile cooktop was afflicted with constant sparking after I cleaned it a couple of days ago. I unplugged it and cut the gas and called for repair. GE tech couldn't come for five days, so I looked on Yelp and messaged Jean and Appliance Fixed!; he got back to me within minutes and fit me in on Saturday morning. Prior to the appointment he confirmed appropriately, and he arrived when he said he would. Upon examination, he diagnosed a wet sensor that had since dried. No repair needed. Over in 5 minutes. I purchased a dishwasher which was to be delivered and installed on 3/29/18 but didn't realize my old one was hard wired so the delivery guy would not install the new one as he "wont touch a hard wired" . I called several companies on yelp that came recommended (about 6) and Jean was the one (of 2) who answered the phone. I explained that I needed it fixed soon because I was having people over tomorrow (Friday) He said no problem, he will add an electrical plug and install my new dishwasher the next day. He called back later that afternoon and said he could take care of it today. (yeah!) He arrived about 5:30 pm (the same day I called him!) put in an electrical plug and installed the dishwasher. He had to make some adjustments (no tile under the dishwasher so it was uneven and I didn't have a air flow gap) but he took it in stride and made it seem easy. I called Friday morning (Black Friday) for repair to my old (13 - 14 years) Maytag dishwasher, and the office was able to schedule a repairman for that afternoon. Jean Gauthier came promptly within the 1 hour window - and called before his arrival to let me know he'd be arriving in 10 - 15 minutes. The problem was that the machine wasn't draining properly nor was the bottom spray arm spinning. Seems that when workmen pulled out the dishwasher to do a job behind the washer a couple of days before, they kinked the hose when putting the washer back and the motor was sitting on top of the hose raising it just enough to lift the spray arm so it couldn't spin freely. The kinked hose was preventing proper draining. Jean worked for two hours and got everything aligned and working for the total cost of $150. I have to say that I was highly impressed with Jean. I had a major fire in my old oven which was very scary. I wasn't sure if the oven was still working and didn't want to find out on my own, so I called Appliance Fixed after reading the reviews on Yelp. Jean came out the next day and took everything apart to make sure it was all in working order, which it was. It needed extreme cleaning so I cleaned everything that night and Jean came back the next day and put the oven back together. The oven looks just like new now! This gentleman is the BEST and was able to literally save the day for me, fixing a brand new cooktop that was not working for a property I had listed that was closing escrow in 5 days. I'd first called Sears Appliance Repair, they didn't repair this brand (WindMax) even though it was purchased through Sears.com. I called another local repair company that only had one person that repairs this brand. Had some emergency and no showed. So I called Appliance Fix. The owner and repairman Jean, is SO GOOD and capable of literally fixing anything, he didn't even need to ask me what the brand was. He came out the day after I called, checked out the cooktop with two burners that wouldn't light. The problem was the spark module that controls all the spark igniters and two were faulty. Our 12 yr. old Dacor double oven ( both the convection top/standard bottom) stopped working at the same time, 1 wk. before Christmas! We are hosting my family for Christmas. Jean was able to come and diagnose the problem in less than an hour. Thankfully, it was not anything major, and he was able to repair it the next day. He also was able to fix one of the burners on our Dacor cooktop that was not turning on (for only $20 more!). I only had to pay $60 for the service visit and $50 for labor on the ovens. Called Jean based on Yelp reviews. I had one oven that was broken, a dishwasher that wasn't washing the top dishes and a wonky refrigerator door. I'd been procrastinating getting them all fixed because it wasn't an emergency and I didn't know who to call. Jean quickly diagnosed and was able to fix all three. He fixed the oven on the spot and had to order parts for the fridge and dishwasher, which he did and returned a business day later to install.
