My friend told me Apex Wings is even better than ECW, so off we went for me to prove him wrong. And if he reads this... sorry, you're wrong. ECW has giant soft wings, Apex has smaller crispy wings. I want giant crispy wings. Both places hook you up with a variety of sauces. Wings here are way too expensive, so subtract one star. If they were giant crispy wings, I'd be more okay with the price. Shearon Harris is a local nuclear plant, but their hottest sauce is merely okay. I barely broke a sweat. I can walk around the corner from my house and find a sauce I can't handle, surely "the best wings in the Triangle" can do that? Potato wedges are pretty good but actually less crispy than the wings, which should not happen with "fries". I guess the shorter driving distance makes up for the higher price from my friend's place, but Apex does nothing to turn me off from ECW unfortunately. read more

I've heard so many rave reviews about this place that I was dying to try it! Several times I stopped by and it was either the wrong day or wrong time of the day and they were closed. Earlier this week my timing was good I stopped there on a dinner break from work and ordered a dozen wings to go and chose the BBQ version. I have to be honest and say with all of the awards and other rave reviews I was extraordinarily underwhelmed by the food. Half of the wings were cooked just fine and the other half were overcooked and dry and crunchy but not in a good way. The BBQ version were drowning in sauce and to be honest, The flavor of the sauce was at best a high-quality canned or bottled product. There was nothing homemade about the consistency texture or flavor. The order came with Texas Toast and celery sticks and although the celery sticks were nice and crisp and very fresh the Texas Toast was literally two slabs of thick bread in the to go container and not even slightly toasted. If first impressions are truly lasting ones the chance I'll be returning is probably "slim to none" I should also add that there is a bar in this venue and there was a customer who was clearly a regular and known by others at the bar including staff who was very intoxicated very loud and very obnoxious Further adding to the adding to the likelihood of a "no return" vote from me. If the staff had any level of sensitivity for other guests in this venue they would've shut this guy off at the bar called him an Uber and sent him home. read more

My wife and I have been coming to Apex Wings for years. Unlike the chain wings places, these wings come from full-sized chickens, not a hummingbird or a canary! She prefers the boneless version, and they are big also. They have at least a dozen sauces as well as dry rubs. They have a full bar, with a number of beers on tap. Several of the staff have been there for years, also. The service is good to excellent, depending on how busy they are, and they can get very busy. The ambiance is "southern bar and grill", though they also have outdoor seating, if the weather is nice. Midway through that first meal, my best friend who was helping me move, said "you've found your place." How right she was, and it's still true. Hot wings are my comfort food, and this place always delivers meaty wings in hot and flavorful sauces. Wow, one of the worst lunch experiences I've had in a long time. Maybe Apex Wings was just having an off-day but there were so many misses I lost track. Yes it's a dive. Yes I shouldn't be expecting too much. But even with the bar set pretty low they didn't make it. And I do like my wings whether you're talking about BW3 or the AYCE wing night at Napper Tandy's. Nothing like a wingy-dingy to satiate your craving for meat and sauce. Step into Apex Wings and you'll notice a well-worn dining room with U-shaped bar, some wood booths and side-room. Mostly dudes here which is no surprise, we grab a booth by the window. Unfortunately the one wait-person is a bit swamped, it takes 10 minutes just to get menus and another 10+ minutes to get our order in. We ask about the AYCE wing lunch special displayed prominently on their website but no, they're not honoring it. The waitress is a bit harried so she grabs our orders. I do some home-made chips with cheese sauce, 10 wings in garlic parmesan along with a diet coke. And we chat and wait for our food. It takes at least 35 minutes for our food to show up which is a problem for lunch service. The basket of wings looks a bit messy, parmesan cheese scattered on an oil wing sauce. There's some cheese-bread on top. The chips come with a bowl of cheese whiz and sliced jalapenos. The verdict? Chips were over-fried, I'd prefer the chips at the NC State Fair. Wings were decently sized but also over-fried and a bit dry. Sauce had virtually no garlic or parmesan taste to them. Best part of the meal was probably the texas toast with cheese, sigh. I left four wings in my basket, it just wasn't worth the calories. And I went without a diet coke refill for about 20 minutes, it was sort of forgotten for a while. Eventually we figure we need to pay up front which takes another 10+ minutes for this meal, ouch. And I end up paying $20 before tip. Meal ends up being over $24, I figured I'd cut her some slack that she was having a bad day. But what can I say, but $24 for that meal was just wrong. Missed on pretty much every aspect of food service. From ambiance, to food, to preparation, flavoring, service and more. Messy, messy, messy. Came here on a busy Friday night with my husband.. You seat yourself and there was a couple of spaces open. Several servers were very attentive to our needs. I ordered six boneless wings in the medium sauce which is not too hot for me. The celery sticks were very fresh and crispy, the ranch dressing was flavorful in the blue cheese dressing had little chunks of blue cheese. The wings were very tasty and good size. Since we started coming here five years ago, it's probably our favorite place for wings and an old school mom & pop vibe. Although they have a full menu of appetizers, burgers, sandwiches and salads, I haven't ventured past the wings much because they're so darn good!! It's tucked into the back corner of an old strip mall that looks pretty dated, but don't judge a book by it's cover! After opening the outer glass door there's two very old wooden doors to go through that sets the tone for the charm of this place. It's got a 50's-60's tavern/pub kind of look inside. Upon entering the bar takes up much of the first room with several tables across from it. Then up a couple stairs and it opens up into the main dining area that has about a dozen or so tables and is a bit quieter, except when it's full. It's not a big place, but it's full of personality and personalities! As I said, I'm into the wings. They are super crispy and with a dozen flavors of sauces to choose from (teriyaki is my favorite) anyone will find one that they like. I usually get the six wings and small salad special, which also comes with a large piece of cheesy Texas toast. Last time I went I ended up bringing the salad home with me cos the wings and celery were so filling! This is also one of the rare places in the Triangle to find deep fried mushrooms and are they ever good! Their house made chips are also very good, thin sliced and crunchy! Going to preface this review by stating that I have only tried their BONELESS wings, and not their BONE-IN wings, which I'm sure are wonderful. As for their boneless wings, gotta say, they are very, very nice indeed. Great price, generous sizes, and flavorful sauce options. Have only ordered take-out a few times. Their online ordering system needs some work as they got our order wrong the first time, but they made up for it by offering us a free 25 wing order on our next visit, so very solid and upstanding ownership which is few and far between these days. Aforementioned botched-up order resulted in 1/3 medium, 1/3 hot and 1/3 teriyaki. We actually ordered all medium wings with extra side sauces of hot & teriyaki. At any rate, they came out really nice and were pleased with the results (at least I was a fan of their teriyaki wings, not so much for everyone else). The only reason we found this place was Yelp! I've driven past this shopping center plenty of times and never knew this was in there. My dad was looking to have wings. I found this place on Yelp and decided to check it out. My husband and father said the wings were some of the best, a lot better than Buffalo Wild Wings. My dad had the mild and garlic, husband had mango habanero. Husband complained that they weren't spicy enough, though! I ordered the fries green tomato to blt and it was awesome. Really greasy and tasty. I couldn't eat the whole sandwich because it was so rich. Pimento cheese, ftw. The French fries are amazing. Beer battered and deep fried. Once in awhile, eating like this is ok! Looks like they had plenty of drink specials. The prices were great. Service was prompt. Only complaint is the restaurant is oddly configured and dark. I always considered this pace as the best wings in the whole country! For the first time I had a very bad experience today. I had ordered a dozen hot wings, an extra cheese bread and fries. The wings were just bland and hardly any sauce was found to be added. No bread, not even the one which should have come with the wings were given. The fries were fine...no mess up. Now the food... the tots were nice and crusty, at the perfect temperature and with great seasonings, my tastebuds burst with flavor and just when i thought it was over the wings made my buds of taste burst again, and even after those wings were delivered, they were able to marinate for a good 2-3 minutes because they were bathing in the oils at the bottom of the chicken wing basket. The Waitress that we had was very rude her name is Elaine blonde short hair, petite girl, she was very rude with the things she said it was absolutely disgraceful. She came up to us after we gave her our money and we were all talking to one another she rudely interrupted and said I'm talking. TAKE OUT REVIEW: I was in town on business and didn't really feel like going out to eat for dinner. I decided that I would rather just grab some takeout and eat at my hotel while watching the NBA Playoffs. While driving to the place, I literally pasted it twice not knowing it was there due to it being tucked away in the corner of a not too pleasant looking strip mall (not that it influences my review any, but just noting it anyway). I parked in the very packed parking lot (it was a Tuesday evening BTW) and walked towards the establishment. Outside was a guy and about 3 younger ladies sitting outside using quite a bit of profanity right at the entrance door. I walked in and the place was busy. I made my way to the bar area and the bar tender immediately asked if he could help me and likely saw the confusing look on my face, so he asked if I was there for a pickup order (Even said my name). He got my order quickly and was courteous (I'm assuming it was the same guy I talked to on the phone). I got my food and was on my way. When I got to my hotel and opened my boxes, I must say that the smell of my wings was not very pleasant! They didn't smell awful or anything, but slightly poultry smelling (as if they were kind of old). Yes, I know the wings are ACTUALLY poultry, but cooked wings shouldn't smell the way they did. I had paid my money, so I said a prayer and decided to try them. I was not at all impressed! They tasted pretty much like they smelled... OLD!
