It appears Dave, the owner of Apex, has an anger management problem. He's a friendly guy until he perceives there might be a problem he doesn't want to deal with. And then, bam ... It's Jekyll and Hammer time. And the person getting hammered is his customer. Early this summer, I spent far more money than I anticipated having Apex install new valve boxes and a timer on my old system. (The workers seemed respectful, by the way. I can't help wondering how Dave treats them.) I hired Apex to do this big job because it was recommended by Thumbtack and seemed to be a leading company. As fall moved in, I was proactive and had Apex blow out and shut down my system early (at a much higher cost than I've ever paid before). After spending all that money upgrading my system early in the summer, I felt relieved that my system was safe. The day before snow and low temperatures were predicted to move in, I was working in my yard and saw water dripping from an irrigation system pipe sticking up above the new valve boxes. I called Apex and left a message in near panic, worried that my system would freeze the next day. When Dave returned my call, he was defensive. He asked where the dripping was coming from, and I described where the pipe was dripping. He announced this was happening because the shutoff valve in my crawl space had failed. He told me to open the drain valve, put a bucket under it, and call a plumber. I told him I would check the shutoff valve. When I got back to my phone, he was gone. I was annoyed, but it did take me a while to get back to my phone, so I still tried to work with him. I emailed him and asked more questions. He responded "Call a plumber." I did call a plumber, who came out the next day in freezing weather and replaced the shutoff valve and the drain valve. The plumber couldn't confirm that they were the problem. I wrote Dave again, told him the shutoff valves were replaced, and asked if I need to have my system blown out again. He responded that I need to find a new company to service my system because I disrespected him by hanging up on him. Not only did I not hang up on him, but I thought he hung up on me. I strongly suspect that Dave doesn't want to deal with this situation and take a chance on being blamed for a frozen system. Now I don't know if my system is ruined, and I can't find anyone to answer my questions and check out my system because all the companies are scrambling to shut off systems already scheduled. Despite this long review, I don't really have the words to convey how I feel about the way this man treated me. I hope I can prevent someone else (especially another woman trying to manage her home repairs by herself) from being treated this way. Regarding Dave's response: Your response had nothing to do with reality. You know only one of us was disrespectful, and it wasn't me. You also know the litany of other offenses you listed as coming from your customers has nothing to do with me. I regret hiring you, and I will try to protect others from subjecting themselves to your abuse. read more

What struck me first about Apex was their professionalism and friendly demeanor. Not often anymore do you find service professionals who have a great attitude, are competent, can explain how your system works without being in a rush and are not bothered by questions. I used Apex to turn on and winterize my system, replace broken sprinkler heads, put in a drip irrigation system and install landscape lighting. At each service appointment they were on time, efficient, knowledgeable and stayed true to the prices that they quoted me beforehand. Overall, a terrific experience with this company. read more

Please don't use this company. I was a loyal customer for 4 years. Paid for the usual annual turn on and blow out service and all was good. Then told 2 years ago that a zone was unable to be fixed and our valves were all bad so paid to have all of that "fixed" which I use the term loosely as of my latest interaction with this company. They showed uh up this year for my usual turn on and was told that we needed a new panel which would cost $900 installed. After doing research on panels saw they could be purchased from several vendors including Rainbird for around $175. When I asked Dave about why the cost from him was so expensive he launched into a diatribe about running a business and all of the costs involved with running a business blah blah blah treating me as an ignorant person who didn't understand the issues of running a business when in fact we have run an independent business since 1995. I am so disappointed with this latest email exchange I had to let everyone know. I never like to post and especially a negative one I just don't want to see anyone else used by this company. Sasha is the person who always showed up for our service but now I believe he's as unethical as Dave. My husband has had no trouble programming our system including program B which Sasha told me he couldn't hardly access. Please Dave do yourself a favor and don't reply to this review with your usual dismissive commentary as I have seen you do in the past and it is truly cringeworthy. Get it together and try running an ethical honest trustworthy business year round. read more

Dave is your typical laid back guy, but he was punctual and he got the job done. We had a faulty sprinkler console in the garage and he replaced it. We also had a problem with a leak in the back and he fixed that as well. The only complaint has to do with overcharging on parts. I checked what he charged on the parts alone and he charged 100% more than the retail price. Remind you that this doesn't include labor cost. When I mentioned the upcharge he gave me the typical pitch of "Hey, this is a business". Also, he replaced a part that didn't need to be replaced. read more

No doubt about it, Yelp does not lead one astray when it comes to the overwhelmingly positive reviews of Apex Irrigation. After a disastrous and trying experience with another local irrigation company, I needed a fresh start. Fellow Yelpers offered reassuring comments about Dave and Apex. In the fall of 2013, I scheduled Dave to drain my sprinkler system. He did a stellar job, and I intentionally waited over a year to write this review as I wanted to see how my system fared the following spring, over the summer, and to determine if I would hire Apex again. Well, my system was perfect and charged without issue come spring 2014. All summer, I experienced no issues with my system. When fall 2014 came calling, I went to calling Dave again. This time, one of his associates (employee I suppose) came to drain the system. He was so early that I felt guilty and rushed home from my meeting. By the time I got there, he had everything prepped he could from the outside. As I opened the garage he came up to greet me and got right to work. The system was drained in no time and I got the fall early bird special on the bill. Given our early freeze in 2014, and the snow in Dec 2014, I've kept an eye on everything and so far all looks good. I recommend giving Apex a shot (no really, I recommended them to my neighbor who needed a quick reliable fix just a few months ago). Dave and crew can also walk through your yard and discuss landscaping and irrigation updates, reconfigurations, or new installs. There's no charge for that walk through and zero pressure to buy (no calls or hassling after the appointment). Apex is my irrigation go to! read more

Just got fired as a customer from Apex. Whoever installed our sprinkler system before we moved in did so with the valves and zones in the back yard. It's been covered by a wooden "pallet" which can be pulled up and moved out of the way to access the valves. Unfortunately, from what I understand, the guy that came out did not move it out of the way (I'm assuming that he just lifted it up or put something down to hold it open) and the pallet partly came down on his hand. The guy was extremely polite about it, but now we can't do business with Apex anymore. I don't quite know how to respond to this, but it seems pretty odd that they would outright tell me that we can no longer use their services again. Well you've definitely got what you wanted. We most certainly won't use your services again. I get that you want to ensure the safety of your workers, but as a customer being fired makes me feel like it's somehow our fault which certainly isn't the case. I'm sure you could have gone about it better than that. Thanks to the guy that came out for being very nice and finishing the last thing you'll do for us. Edit for response: Exaggeration does lend much to your credibility. You make it sound like there are booby traps around it. It's just covered by a piece of wood which is easy enough to move. Regardless, you won't have to worry about it again. Maybe next time you can be part of a solution instead of just blowing someone off completely. read more

After Apex installed first fixed our system we had them out for Winterization services. The did not properly close the shutoff valve and our basement was flooded, to which they responded it was not their fault, the valve was already compromised. Since I had no way of proving that the valve was in good condition prior to them winterizing the system we paid for all of the damage to our flooded basement. After getting the valve fixed and the water back on, now the apex system which they had setup just the summer before is not working. I was told when I called them that is common and they were too busy to get out and take care of it quickly. "This is our busy time so you are just going to have to wait, we already didn't charge you when I came out to your house to assess the damage to your basement last year so sorry you are just going to have to wait in line". This level of service was great at first and quickly went to some of the worst I have experienced. Dave said he had no problem if I went somewhere else to get it fixed since they were so busy and I did. I suggest everyone else do the same. Got someone out the next day to fix all their mistakes and with much better customer service. read more

I have now used Apex Irrigation twice. The first time was to turn on our sprinkler system when we moved into our house and the second was yesterday when they blew it out for the winter. We hired Dave from Apex to do various upgrades on our existing sprinkler system this past spring. First, he expanded our existing system by doubling our coverage in our backyard and put in water efficient heads. In addition, he tuned our front yard zones and improved the coverage with new heads. Now our back yard and front yard have great water coverage and we use less water than a year ago. For our garden, he put in a drip line system on its own zone. The results are amazing, we have a maintenance free irrigated garden. We have had more vegetables with less work in our garden this year. Dave explained everything upfront and in detail. Apex is a great company to work with. Dave was very responsive to my questions, online scheduling is a breeze and they worked with me to reschedule around the Denver monsoon season we've been having this year. Sasha (the service technician) worked with me to spot all of the deficiencies in our system and rank them in order of importance so we could spread the work out and not take one big financial hit. This is our first house with a sprinkler system and he took the time to explain all the parts and pieces, what they do and showed me how to program the system. Just a heads up. There is an hour minimum charge of $75 that they fail to mention on their site, during the visit or in any email communications. If you pay for a valve, make sure they replace the entire thing since you paid for it and keep them busy for at least an hour. I paid $30 for a $15 valve and $2 per wire nut (which I get since they are a small business and have a stocked truck) and they only replaced the solenoid, innards and the top half. Brian was nice enough but I would look elsewhere that are more transparent with their fees and work for the time you pay for. read more

Dave and Apex were fantastic. I got two quotes before I made a decision. The first guy came out and took 3 weeks to get me his quote. Dave got it to me very quickly. Dave and his staff are just easy going guys. No mess, felt comfortable at work with my wife and kids home when they were working. Check this out. ..we had an old water shut off. Dave fixed that for a reasonable cost. He also dug up a tree stump and threw in a 7 zone sprinkler control when we paid for a 6 zone. Can't say enough good things about this sprinkler company. Friendly and reliable. They're popular for a reason, so book early! We've used Apex at the beginning and end of several sprinkler seasons. They're always easy to deal with. You can schedule online and pay with a credit card. Their technicians have showed me locations of valves and shut offs, given me tips for watering, and helped me figure out the control system for our sprinklers. Book ahead, because these guys are very popular. They work really hard, and do a great job. Prices are very reasonable for the services received. After the super-fast (and early) freeze that hit last week, I knew my outside pipes had frozen and cracked. Dave came to winterize and help me assess the damage. After blowing out all four of my sprinkler zones, we got together a game plan for fixing everything in the spring. Absolutely love Apex and will recommend them to everyone. We had to replace our outside pressure vacuum breaker because (yet again) it froze and cracked (don't get me started on how much I hate the system we adopted from the previous owners.) Here's what is so awesome about these guys. A) you can make an appointment online on the exact day you want. Their convenient calendar shows you exactly what's booked up and what isn't, so there's no guessing and back and forth emails/calls. Super easy! B) Dave sends an email immediately verifying the date and time, so again, no mystery, no additional follow-up needed. C) Derrek was our tech. Told us what we needed, the cost, and got to work. He didn't have to hop in his vehicle to go get extra parts, etc., so he was in and out during the window we chose. PS-this was even with some extra hassles of having to solder around bad cuts from previous "fixes" and trying to work with the crap angles of our existing POS system. Before Derrek left we asked him some other questions about our system and other plumbing needs. He was extremely knowledgeable and courteous. I didn't feel like he was trying to get to lunch, or his next job. He took the time to provide excellent customer service. D) Apex offers email "reminders" to their clients in the fall and spring for blowouts and startups. 2 emails a year! Not 470. Not incessant calls during all hours of the day. Yaaaaaay! Dave came out and fixed my sprinkler system. I felt his price was exactly what I considered it would cost. Everything was great - supper happy! THEN.....I noticed weird noises coming from my house. I thought it was my renter listening to techno in the basement. After pacing around the house at 3am with my ear to the floor/the wall/the exterior of the house I finally discovered the noise was close to my sprinkler system. I turned off the water to the system and FINALLY the noise went away and I could sleep. Well, I am in the process of selling my house and moving so I really needed this fixed quickly because I have new sod that will die if I don't water it. Called and emailed Dave - immediate same day response - he came out and discovered the sod people had messed with the valves and left them open. He helped me immediately even though he is booked weeks out because everyone loves the work he does! Quick fast fix, no charge :), happy day!! Apex is as good as they say. Maybe...better. Derrick and Mercedes are the hardest working, most capable and professional installers that I have worked with in any trade capacity. Oh, and really nice guys too. They completely repaired an older and root-disrupted drip zone that required over a fifth of a mile of new hose and heads in a day. They tested to make sure that the pressure was where it needed to be and that the entire system worked right before they left. They worked tirelessly over a very long day and when they were done, it was hard to tell that they were even there. So often, clean up is overlooked or an afterthought in irrigation work, but not with these guys. We found Apex through Yelp, so here's a Yelp shout out to Apex. My husband and I live in a little 50's era house that has a very old sprinkler system. Last summer we had some trouble with it that we weren't able to fix ourselves. We decided to keep it, and make it work. After doing some research, we called Apex to come out and take a look. They have now replaced all of the valves, rewired the whole system, replaced the control box, and we have a plan for the next couple of services to get our geriatric system up to par. My husband makes the appointments online, and they email both of us confirmations and reminders. I have been so happy not only with the quality of work, and fair pricing, but also the caliber of the employees and customer service. All of the men that have come by have been kind, understanding, honest, and have explained each step of the process thoroughly.
