Beautiful village east of Pamplona in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The town of Aoiz is located on the right bank of the river Irati at 1500 foot altitude, at the foot of the mountains of Artxuba-Zariquieta. Surrounded by mountains and crossed by rivers and ravines, the town has a picturesque setting.
The prehistoric remains found in the area denote an old settlement. The name Aoiz seems to date from the time of Romanization. The core of settlement emerged during the first through fourth centuries, AD.
In the year 924, of the town was destroyed by the caliph Abd al-Rahman III during the invasion of the Moors from North Africa. Spanish troops of the Duke of Alba, occupied the area in July 1512.
In the first half of the twentieth century the town's major focus was manufacturing, a major sawmill and a modern chemical industry.
Today, trails run through the mountains, one of the most wild and uninhabited areas of Navarra. These trails are remnants of a network of roads used by inhabitants for centuries. The recreational area at the Itoiz Reservoir is the starting point for white water rafting down the Irati river passing through the medieval bridge or Bidelepu Auzola.
