Everyone poses next to the Antarctica Monuments on the waterfront in Hobart. It is titled "Self portrait, Louis and Joe". The sculpture is a portrait of Louis Bernacchi, holding a flag, and his Husky dog, Joe, standing in front of an old box camera which is on a tripod. There are another series of sculptures which comprise this monument including suit cases, skis, ropes, pick axes and other equipment as well as more dogs, seals and penguins on rocks (which appear to be part of a sculpture entitled "Going South") as well as numerous birds.
Bernacchi was a scientist, photographer & writer who went on expeditions to Antarctica. The first was with the Borchgrevink Antarctic Expedition from 1898-1900 on the ship "Southern Cross" which left Hobart from where this monument stands. The second was with Scott's British National Expedition in 1901-1904. read more
