Machon Drisha is an institution of higher Jewish learning on Manhattan's Upper West Side. While…read moreofficially nondenominational, the overall mood/vibe/tenor of this place of prayer and Torah is Modern Orthodox, bordering on the more left wing, due to the fact that it offers learning on the highest levels to women (the more right wing seems to be pushing back on women's learning, unfortunately) and maintains an inclusive policy welcoming all to learn and explore here. It is truly a place to grow and advance oneself, spiritually, intellectually, and emotionally, and you are bound to make great connections with the faculty and other students. You get the feeling here that the faculty aren't interested in pontificating; rather, they, too, are learning, and the lifelong learner model is employed in all the classes. There is much to learn not just from the texts, but also from the ways in which others approach and view the texts. Courses are offered primarily in the areas of Hebrew Language, Bible, Talmud, and Rabbinics. I sponsored a class given by Rabbi Yehuda Gilad last year on the subject of conversion in Israel, and I was pleased that Drisha provided a forum for this groundbreaking innovator to share his views. They offer a Drishat Shalom Fellowship for young professionals and students of all genders, and I intend to participate in that program, as it seems very promising, and open to people on all levels of learning. Another interesting series is a Beit Midrash for Mental Health Professionals, led by Rabbi Dr. Tsvi Blanchard, a rabbinic scholar, philosopher, and psychologist, which explored connections between Jewish text and mental health healing. You will be challenged, inspired, and are bound to grow and improve as a Jew and human being here at Drisha.
