The bartender wasn't particularly welcoming, when I asked if I could sit at the bar, he pushed the reservation sign at the seat I was pointing at towards me from what I remember... point taken that yes there was a reservation sign but I just wanted to check since I wasn't sure... perhaps I was perceived as rude since I asked in English, or coz I wasn't local and didn't know, or may be that's in keeping with the vibe of the bar, no idea. Obviously can't comment on the drinks, but yep, there was no effort made to accommodate me, though I also didn't ask. Oh well, too bad.

Took a little bit of time but eventually they seemed to warm to me. One huge biker dude took a shine to me and kept joking with me all night in broken English. At the end of his night (which was quite early) he swooped in and gave me a kiss on the cheek and wished me a lovely vacation. The bathrooms were cleaner and nicer than the cobalt/funkys/astoria from my dives back home in Vancouver - seriously Vancouver, get your shit together - LITERALLY. Drink prices seemed super reasonable to me. But really anywhere in Europe they seem reasonable to me. Bartender didn't really know how to make a whiskey sour and what I ended up drinking wasn't that fantastic, but I think that's my fault, what the hell was I doing ordering a whiskey sour at this place? Beer seems to be the best bet. The place filled up quick and seemed very popular with the locals and tourists alike.

There is a nice outside patio seating, however it does close at 10pm and all patrons must either leave or move inside. There is indoor smoking, pool tables, and no line at the bathrooms. Only downside - with the popularity, it can get cramped. My boyfriend and I went on a weekday, and it was flooded with a mix of Americans and Germans. We stayed about an hour, as we were standing at the bar for the most part, but really enjoyed our time there.

Something told me to turn down a different way than I usually would. Walked by this little gem, and I knew I had to go in. Something about it. The bartender Stevie was extremely beautiful, and very trippy. She was super friendly and an absolutely unique gal. I told her how much I love the bar, and she said that I had to go and tell it to the man who was sitting outside. When I talked to him, I instantly fell in love. I knew right away that I had met someone that I wouldn't ever even come close to meeting again in this life. What a brilliant and sweet man he was, and I'm sad that I forgot his name. He sat and chatted with me about life there for the past 40 years. He speaks pure art, not a typical conversation, which I appreciate. He deserves to have a book written about himself. Excellent music, I just wish that I had some mushrooms while I was in there. But then again, you don't really need them. And besides that, I probably wouldn't have made it home. Had a couple of great beers, one of the most amazing hours of my life, and I can't speak more highly of this place. I wouldn't have minded staying a few more hours, but being the lightweight that I am... wouldn't have gone on so well to end nicely. Bathroom is down some crazy looking stairs which I can imagine would be interesting after enough drinks. This is where locals and regulars hang out. Everyone was very friendly and there was a nice even mix of English and German language. The staff was very fluent in English. I liked the place minus one major issue and that was the smoking inside. The bar is so small and the smoke so strong you leave smelling like a cigar. The two times I went, I had to clean my jacket twice because I could still smell smoke on it the next day. This was the only major turn off to an otherwise awesome little bar.

If you check my other reviews, you will notice that I have a love affair with grungy punk dives and smokey booths. This bar, although not extremely over the top rock n roll, nor extremely smoky, provides a nice alternative oasis from the more "preppy" diggs in the area. Cool music, cheap booze, and lots of sitting space. A refreshing homestead in the sea of polo shirts and overpriced Berliner Pilsners.
