The service wasn't much warmer--smiles seemed to be in shorter supply than the daily specials. The real highlight, however, was the host's impressive commitment to table turnover. Before we had even finished our drinks, he was already hovering like an airport gate agent announcing final boarding. Nothing says "enjoy your evening" quite like feeling rushed toward the exit while your glass is still half full. There are plenty of great tapas spots where the food is fresh and guests are treated as more than a stopwatch challenge. Sadly, this wasn't one of them.

Welcoming staff - husband and wife. All smiles and warmth, they were happy to make food and drink recommendations to a Valencia novice that got my evening off to a great start. I had a half-size cheese and meat platter that was freshly prepared and served quickly. A local IPA recommended was a perfect accompaniment. I had to follow up with the smoked sardine tostas- simple yet divine! The sardines were plump and juicy, subtly smoky. Unfortunately these smoky little fish are bought from a fishmonger - nothing I can take back home with me. Afterwards they were happy to suggest some off the tourist track sights to see.

We didn't have reservations but the paella Gods were with us that night because a table just happened to be leaving allowing us to be seated within 10 minutes. We sat outside by narrow alley. It was slightly chilly but the alley made for interesting people watching. We started with the Squid Salad served with grilled onions and zucchini. The squid was super tender and perfectly seasoned. However we came for the paella and it did not disappoint. We ordered the Lobster Paella. It arrived piping hot. Along with chopped pieces of lobsters still in the shell, the dish also had nuggets of shrimp, bay scallops and mini squid rings. But the start attraction was the rice. Wonderful depth of flavor from the broth and infused seafood. The socarrat, the slightly burnt, crispy layer on the bottom of the pan is the key indicator of a well made paella and this one knocked it out of the park. Service was very friendly but slow. Not sure if was because they had a packed house and understaffed. Next time we would prefer to sit inside. Some people waiting outside for a table were smoking a few feet from us which was annoying . Happy Eating!!
