Finally made my way to Ang's for dinner tonight with the hubs. I'm a bit torn on whether to give 3 or 4 stars because our wait for our food was rather long. But it wasn't like we were in a rush, it was quite busy, and the quality of the food was just really, really good. So I'm opting to give them the benefit of the doubt. It was hard to decide what to have for dinner because of all the great specials they're running right now, plus an extensive menu. We ended up getting a shrimp tempura app, Volcano Roll and Super Crunchy Roll to start, figuring we could add on if we wanted more. The tempura was delicious. As for the rolls, the ingredients were very fresh and each had a distinct, delicious flavor profile that stood on their own. We added on a Spicy California Roll at the end to complete our meal. As I said, the wait for the food was longer than I'd expect, but service was polite and pleasant. I'd think at some point they'll need to bring on a little extra staff to handle increasing popularity. I'm looking forward to going back and trying some other items. I'd really like to try that Bento special. They were going to tables nonstop while we were there and looked to be a really perfect individual meal. read more

I've been to this restaurant twice now. I had already read/skimmed through the reviews before coming so I had an idea of what to expect. The prices are great especially when you dine in. They have a half off list if you eat inside instead of to go. You'll have an even better experience if you prepare yourself with the type of customer service you're about to receive. We had the same female server both times. She wasn't bad at her service but she's short with her responses and doesn't have that "warmth" you expect from your servers. The first time I went with all my sisters and she barely said a word unless you asked her a question or requested something and it was usually answered with one word "yes or no". The second time I went with the spouse and kids. Again she was short but friendlier with the children. Basically the way she carries herself with the customers makes her come off as rude but I'm sure it's not that. The food was really good both times we went and I plan to go again. read more

I had an amazing brunch experience here with my friends. I had the salmon teriyaki bento box. The homemade ginger dressing was delicious!! The salmon teriyaki was out of this world!! And the service from Jennifer was quick, friendly and honest. I had the jasmine tea, which I loved, but my friend thought it tasted "parfumy" May just be an acquired taste lol. It seems the sushi all you can eat has taken over the Hampton Roads area. We initially weren't planning on ordering the buffet and we could tell the hostess was confused as their buffet is an obvious decision unless you are looking for a salad and maybe a single roll. Our waitress was very attentive as we ordered a single roll at a time and enjoyed each other's company. What used to be my favorite... is now a "never again". I order through DoorDash - and tonight I had to request a refund for such horrific food. Now that I see their new menu in the bag, I understand... they've clearly been bought out or something. The Salmon Carpaccio? ARRIVED COOKED. with cooked capers. And no red onion and no cilantro and some sort of spice shaken on it! The Rock Shrimp Tempura, that was so light and wonderful with an incredible dipping sauce? If I could give zero stars I would. Went there last night for my birthday, ordered two shrimp fried rices, the summer time and rainbow rolls. Spent over $50 just to have over cooked, dry, flavorless rice, scarce shrimp the size of a nickel, and rubbery sushi. Owner is very bullheaded. He has terrible customer service skills and refused to take accountability for ruining my meal by placing my raw sushi in a small, unventilated bag with steaming hot food. Got the spicy city roll and may I say it was hands down the bees knees!! They don't add a crap ton of rice on the roll and presentation is nice as well! The waitress was very friendly. She helped my boyfriend's son open his Japanese soda. He got a real kick out it and really enjoyed it. He even saved the bottle. The seafood was very fresh and tasty. Beautiful presentation as well. I had the Hurricane Roll and the Seafood Naruto. Both were delicious no rice options. Ang makes all of the sushi himself so if you go with a big party be prepared to wait. You won't be disappointed though. The food is worth the wait. Had dinner with my cousin, because she was so eager to go there and craving sushi, she dragged me along with her. She told me about the 50% reg. Rolls they have during dinner time till they close. We ordered the spicy salmon roll consisted of (salmon and crunch) , Spicy yellowtail roll consisted of (yellowtail and crunch) , super duper roll (consisted of cooked salmon, eel, & avocado with eel sauce), & shrimp tempura roll (consisted of fried shrimp and spinach leaves with eel sauce). Each roll is originally $5-$6 and paid half so each roll was like $2.50-$3.00. We got plenty of food for a great price. The quality of the food was really good and the service was great. Having eaten sushi in dozens of US states, several countries in Europe and Asia, and even having lived in Okinawa, Japan for more than 5 years, I can say without equivocation or hesitation that Ang's Sushi Bistro serves some of the best Japanese cuisine I've ever had the honor of tasting. From the very first bite, I was transported back to the warm climes of Okinawa. My wife, son, and I were absolutely blown away by not only the authenticity of the dishes, but the obvious care that went into the design of each one. I do not think I could overstate my satisfaction with my experience at Ang's. The first course we received was Miso soup. Upon tasting just the broth, my wife and I exchange smiles--Smiles that wouldn't leave our faces until we had to leave this wonderful meal. Just the right amounts of miso, hon dashi, and soy sauce combined to leave us wanting more. And luckily for us, the meal was just beginning. Next came the gyoza and edamame for my son, and fried tofu for all of us to share. The Gyoza were great, and edamame is edamame, but the fried tofu was absolutely amazing. Perfectly fried, yet not too greasy. The sauce provided was soy and ginger based--not too overpowering with just a touch of sweetness. And then came the entrees. Between us, we ordered Unagi, a vegetable roll, the Alaska Roll, Musubi (not on the menu, but they'll make it if you ask), Tamago sushi, and a California roll (the standard by which all American sushi places are judged). Boy, I could not have been more impressed. The unagi was barbecued perfectly. The eel wasn't too tough or too fishy, and the rice had an excellent consistency (sticky without being too dry, perfect amount of vinegar). The rolls were all excellent. Ingredients were well distributed, never leaving me wanting for more of any one thing in any given bite. The fish was of a quality I've not experienced in any sushi restaurant outside of Japan. Unfortunately, I can't speak to some of the sushi--specifically the tamago--because my wife devoured it, telling me that it was better than any tamago nigiri she'd had in Japan. I've saved the best for last: Musubi. For those who might not know, Musubi is a Hawaiian-inspired dish that has been co-opted by the Japanese. You can normally find it at Japanese convenience stores--where it consists of spam and egg between two layers of rice. Ang's has a different take on this convenient delight: nigiri-style spam and rice, held together with seaweed, topped with a small sliver of lemon, some sprouts, and lightly coated with a delicious sweet sauce. Never have I had what amounts to a convenience store food be upgraded so quickly to gourmet fare. It was absolutely mind-blowing. Unfortunately, we were only in Virginia visiting family for the holidays, otherwise Ang's would become a favorite haunt of ours in the area. My advice for those of you who may go to Ang's in the future: ditch the American sushi -- be bold and try something you've never had. Sure the california roll was good--but the real appeal to Ang's is how authentic the cuisine is. It's a culinary experience that no one should miss. read more

We finally decided to try this place out on a friend's recommendation. Let me tell you.. we should have tried this bistro sooner! My husband and I arrived before 6pm and were able to get their early bird special bento for $10! They really should up the price on this menu item because you get a lot more than what you pay for! It came with soup, salad and your choice of 2 items from a select menu of kitchen and sushi entrees. After enjoying Ang-san's sushi at Zushi in Virginia Beach and Nana in Suffolk since 2007, I was excited to hear Ang-san had plans to finally open his own restaurant in Chesapeake this month. Located in the same plaza as another local favorite, The Broken Egg, Ang's Sushi Bistro is a beautifully decorated restaurant with ample seating and a spacious sushi bar. Ang-san and his staff welcome you in cheerfully, and no sushi meal in Hampton Roads truly rivals his omakase. Full disclosure, after I ate Ang's magic sushi, I had to get him as a client...the food is THAT good. I am a sucker for FRESH sushi, and he delivers. The flavors he puts together are the best mix of sweet and spicy, with some surprising tart and tangy notes that I never expect. I love the fact that the tiger roll, for instance, hits the mouth sweetly and leaves a pepper like burn down the throat; very creative and the textures is amazing. It was a slow Sunday, and although I don't know why I was the only patron here, I was more than pleased with my experience. I ordered the Chirashi and was delighted at the presentation. The flavor of the fish was equally delightful. As fresh and crisp as you would expect from any high end and high priced restaurant, but with a much smaller bite out of your wallet. I've only been here once, but this review is a 4.5 for Ang's. Ang definitely takes pride in his business - after being the sushi chef at several different restaurants, he personally made the sushi my group had that night, and came over to chat with us at the end of our meal. Kudo points for that. We started with the soft shell crab app, which unlike other soft shell crabs had a light batter was less oily than others. I'd compare it to Bonchon chicken versus regular fried chicken. Main courses included sushi, sashimi, and rolls. All had quality fish and presentation! Additionally, the rice was served warm and was balanced in flavor (something that a lot of sushi buffets in the area get wrong). Next time I might try omakase or something similar at the sushi bar because the group sitting there seemed to be having a good time with Ang entertaining them. read more

This is my go to place for AYCE sushi in the area. I have made it a point to eat at all the sushi locations in Chesapeake, and Ang's consistently the freshest. First, let me start by saying I love their food and ambience. Nice jazzy music playing in the background, open, and quiet. Now for the part that is absolutely frustrating for me and to most consumers: specials that have too many exclusions. If you are going to offer a special, offer it. If not, don't. There is nothing more frustrating to me than too many restrictions on the special that it no longer becomes a special. I ordered a full priced item at lunch and one roll which should be 1/2 off on special. I'm dining in... But I MUST eat that roll in order to get it particularly half off even though I also ordered a full priced item off the menu. My lunch now cost me $12.50 plus tax and tip which wouldn't be a problem... But I absolutely HAD to eat that 1/2 price roll or pay full price for it. I don't understand having specials that you can't enjoy. Sure, some would say just order this only or that but it's the principle of the thing. I'm frustrated at the experience today. The one restriction that irritates me the most is the restaurant coupon I purchased that supposedly had no restriction except to spend a certain amount, and when I tried to order food on special in restaurant (even if it was over that amount) I couldn't use the coupon I already purchased for that. It is one or the other. When I purchased the restaurant coupon, it had no other restrictions. read more

Drove 45 miles to goto this Awesome place, The Owner Ang was at the Sushi counter when we entered it was their 2 year Anniversary. The Entire staff was amazing, the restaurant is immaculately clean, the food top shelf all the way around. Mido soup excellent the Avacado Salad perfect proportions. There were 4 of us in the group we all ordered 3 rolls and all 12 were huge and delicious. For the size of the rolls the price was extremely reasonable. Went in after reading all the reviews. Only one waitress and she was really to busy to provide good service due to having 5 tables that included 2 large parties. She forgot to put in my OMG roll order but at least didn't charge me. Goyza was not very flavorful and very, very soft. Yakisoba was okay...nothing special. Ang roll was to covered in sauce. Didn't care for it at all. Tiger roll was also just as covered in sauce. All the sauce really masked the actual roll flavor. Sushi was good. Overall the price was high for what was mediocre food. Haiku sushi or even sushi king is much better and a better value. I normally give a place at least 2 visits before I decide if it is place I will call good/bad.
