On a whim, my daughter and I stopped by Ang's to eat. I have eaten at Ang's regularly before Ang left and loved it there. The restaurant is definitely showing its age. The booth seats had tape on some of the surface area. The AYCE sushi was decent. I think it ranks a little higher than other AYCE sushi places. The service was good. The biggest issue I had was that even though the menu clearly states the AYCE price for kids 9 and under, I was charged the adult price for my child. I was asked how old my child was when ordering and it wasn't mentioned that they would be charging full price. It was only when I received the bill that I was told they changed the age limit to 8 but hadn't updated the menu. Sounds sketchy to me. Other than the food was ok. My experience with this restaurant left me still hungry and grossed out. I tried the lunch special teriyaki. The meat was tough. There was too much onion and not enough other vegetables. The portion size left a lot to be desired. There's no option to have fried rice, only white. The side California roll was in the box with the meal(so it got heated) and the idea and taste of hot sushi is gross. The lumpia roll was nasty and mushy. I didn't taste any meat in it. Wow, I can see why they're so good. Sitting at the sushi bar, I got to watch the plates being prepared and it was quite the show. Small platters, big platters, all sorts of fish being carefully carved and arranged. I had the "Crazy Ang's Platter" and with four sauces on it, it was a bit much. Pretty to look at and I should have known, because I'm not a huge sauce fan. None-the-less, it was tasty. I also had a simple fish in a carved cucumber sushi, which always looks nice and tastes better. The slight vinegar in the sauce really kicked up the flavor of the very simple fishes. I had a nice salmon skin hand roll to finish (after I was given a plate of tuna that was seared and sliced thin, yum) and it was perfect. Nice crispy salmon skin in a cone of seaweed paper. This spot is probably my favorite sushi restaurant here in Chesapeake/VB. Beats out Yama, Masa, and Oishi. All you can eat is available, you can order limitless sushi or the main dishes like the Hibachi or specials. Typically all you can eat is a quality red flag, but not here- never had a bad roll or bad hibachi come to my table. Wait staff were more than professional and friendly, and catered easily to pretty big groups I've seen. This place doesn't get enough attraction, I'd hate to see my favorite sushi spot go down. I hate that I'm putting this review up... I understand during COVID things don't go as planned but this is just a whole different restaurant than when I did a review several years ago with 5 stars. We ordered a DoorDash delivery. The sashimi and sushi was warm; so I thought maybe I didn't bring the delivery inside quick enough or that the dasher took too long. But no, the egg sashimi was cold. Like REALLY cold. And spongy. My salmon carpaccio was NOTHING like it was before. Thick cut salmon that seemed half cooked (was warm) and A (singular) caper on each sashimi, some oil and spice. Not the same flavor. No red onion/shallot, no cilantro, not ponzu like flavor it had before. My salad was watery. I put the dressing in and ended up throwing it out. The miso soup had lack of any flavor-- not enough dashi or miso. Let's not even get into the size of the tofu. Then we had beef tataki.. came in cooked. With shichimi spice on it.. this used to be my favorite dish. No onion, ponzu sauce-- just total lack of flavor. Gyoza was decent but quite honestly doesn't taste too different from the frozen kind. The rice. Oh the rice. It was definitely a day old or two. It came with the chicken katsu dish we ordered. That same rice seemed to be used on our rolls. I spent over $80 and most of it ended up in the trash. I REALLY liked eating at Ang's before. This isn't just the difference of take out and dine in. We got a coupon that's $10 worth off of $20 or more When we got there the waitress sat us down and before she left us she told us to look at the board of their specials instead of telling us. The freakin board was across the room written in faded marker on a white board . I could barely see a letter . Anyway, we ordered the bento box which was their special going on from 4:30-6:00. Its $10 a box. Came with salad, 2 shumai, an orange, and your 2 choice of rolls or kitchen items. My favorite roll was the OMG roll!! No wonder it's called that because after tasting it I literally said oh my gosh so good lol. The salad was refreshing and tasty. It had this citrus zesty dressing. The bento box did leave me satisfied and full. However, we weren't allowed to use the coupon on specials so we weren't able to use it. A local jewel here in Chesapeake that turns out the best yakisoba in town. It's a bit on the pricier side, but the food is worth it. I come here a few times a month to get my yakisoba fix and the taste has always been consistent. What I really like about this place is that the food comes out when it's ready, so the dishes can be piping hot. I like knowing that my food is not sitting under a heat lamp for several minutes while the rest of the tables order is being prepared. How have I not been here before? Came here on a stormy Tuesday evening around 5pm. There was only one person at a booth and it was very quiet. We met another couple there and started out with several appetizers. Calamari, miso soup, salad with ginger dressing, and a couple orders of the special of the night, fried tuna appetizer. The calamari was a smaller portion than what you're used to at other restaurants, however, the sauce that came with it (bbq/tangy) was yummy and it was cooked perfectly. Soups were basic, seaweed and cucumber salad was also pretty basic, but very tasty. Their fried tuna appetizer was very good, the only thing that threw me off was that the tuna was cooked, but rolled up fried, and with that awesome eel and spicy mayo sauce was wonderful. I was impressed with our rolls. They were very delicious and it just leaves me wanting more. My husband and I ordered a Tiger roll and a Crazy Ang Roll. Delectable! Not only were they beautifully plated, but they melted in your mouth. For dessert, we tried the mochi ice cream. 3 different flavors, strawberry, green tea, and mango. WONDERFUL!! Well I definitely have been coming back and I think it's because of their half off sushi and how good it is. I've tried a few appetizers with my sushi and not too bad, love me some edamame and calamari hehe! Also noticed they have another server, and she seems to be very friendly. Heard she's actually the daughter of the other waitress. Every time I come here, it's usually with the cousin. She loves her sushi! Don't bother trying their all u can eat.The rice is mushy, rolls are bland and not well made and sashimi is small. When you order more, especially sashimi, they make you feel uncomfortable about it. Service is extremely slow and if someone walks in to order carry out they will make their food before yours- even if you ordered before they walked in. We sat by the counter and saw them stop and sit our sushi aside to make a walk in order- twice. i hate leaving bad reviews but the customer service here really made my family and i feel unwanted. We came for the unlimited sushi buffet and after ordering our second round (which was only two rolls each) we felt as though we shouldn't order anymore. The sushi flavor started to decline and not taste as fresh as the first round. The presentation of the rolls is honestly why i gave them two stars. One star- cleanliness of restaurant two stars- presentation of food i wish that they had been faster with food arrival time, as we were waiting here for at least 30 minutes.( in between each round, we only ordered 3 rounds) Not only were they rude to us, but the sushi chef and the waitress kept yelling at each other in another language but you can totally tell they were fighting based on body language and tone. I hope that not every customer feels this way when they come here. Came here all the time many years ago when they did half off classic rolls throughout the week. This place was my family's favorite sushi spot. Now it's all you can eat and seems to be under different management. Everything was pretty gross. Paper thin pieces of fish on the sushi (we didn't expect sashimi level but this was borderline nonexistent). More vegetables than fish in the rolls, the tempura was doughy and undercooked, the kani salad should be listed as cucumber and crab soup, and the shrimp fried rice tasted strangely of bacon? Hands down the best restaurant experience we've had in ages! I can't believe it took us this long to try this place out. We'd heard from others how great it is, but the location is not one we're usually in (except for breakfast at Egg Bistro). The service all around was excellent - friendly, knowledgeable, engaging and accommodating. When we'd looked here on Yelp at the menu beforehand but the specific choices we'd decided on were nowhere to be seen. Thankfully we asked because we got exactly what we wanted. Both the waitress and sushi chef came over afterward and were a total pleasure to talk with. The food? Oh my god... I got the steak and chicken hibachi dinner while my husband ordered a sushi combo. The salads were fresh, the Clear Soup is out of this world delicious and the meals themselves were fresh and soooo yummy. It isn't traditional hibachi where the chef cooks in front of you but I guarantee it's THE best flavors I've ever had of a hibachi entree and much more generous of a plate. Also - I don't really care about the show 90% of the time. Everything sushi wise was perfectly cut, displayed, fresh and anything else you might ask for. Neither of us ever finishes a full meal which is why we opted out of the AYCE "buffet." Instead we got to bring our leftovers home. (Didn't ask but I assume they don't let you take AYCE orders out as leftovers) Additionally, they have excellent prices. We spent $46 which included a tea and beer plus an additional $22 in tips for both our server and the sushi chef. We like to be generous especially when everything is so perfect. Seriously... This sushi spot is up and coming, so don't be turned off when you don't see more than 2 people in the building. Some of my friends that eat at Ang's frequently have raved about this place, and I have to agree with them. Most sushi spots in HR aren't that great. I usually stick to one or two restaurants, but I can see myself coming back here to try more things. The salmon carpaccio has an interesting flavor, something that I can't really put my finger on, but it was delicious. I wish I had the entire plate to myself. I don't think it would be filling as a main dish for one person, so get a few more appetizers or rolls. The age dashi tofu wasn't awesome, but you get a lot for your money. I tried the Spicy Girl (or City?) roll, OMG roll, and Best Friend roll. None of them disappointed. I had to bump it up to full five. I love places like this where the cooks are the same and consistent with their food. I came back here another two times. He puts so much thought and prep into the food and he makes plating a key aspect in his craft. I applaud Ang very much for his dedication. You walk in and he's standing there all day making sushi fresh as you order. His food is edible art. I stray away from sushi slathered in a ton of sauce/tempura. For it takes away from the real sushi experience. So far I've tried the tuna in hot oil appetizer. Tuna tataki with watermelon and avocado (summer special). Sashami deluxe, which was so good and I couldn't finish. This is definitely a place where if you're HUNGRY get an appetizer or two to guarantee a full tank in your stomach. Japanese cuisine is meant to satisfy your hunger compared to the gold ol american stuff your face off portions. The portions are definitely on the smaller side. Soup and salad does the job for me. Ang actually came out if the kitchen and made a bowl of Beef Tatanaki, which was RIDICULOUSLY good! It took me a bit of time to get back to Ang's but I have to say, this is the best sushi place in Chesapeake. I was talking to some friends tonight and I was very adamant about them adding Ang's to their list of places to visit. The quality is unmatched. We split a number of things and it was impressive all the way through. We had the soft shell crab, Ang's special, salmon carpaccio (my favorite), the spam sushi (for all you spam lovers), and while I enjoyed this, I ordered chirashi and wished I ordered one of his specialty rolls. With that being said, I would recommend that you don't order sashimi or chirashi. If you did what you'll get is fresh and you'll love what you eat but Ang's creativity stands out among the many chefs in the area and you'd be missing out on his special creations by not ordering his rolls. With the temptation of AYCE sushi restaurants in the CHES/VB, it is easy to neglect authentic jewels such as Ang's. Sushi can be quite expensive but this place is worth every pretty penny! I am no sushi connoisseur but I can surely vouch for fine sushi. The tiger roll and spicy yellowtail were an absolute hit for me. It was very fresh and probably the best yellowtail I've had to date! I love salmon sashimi, so I ordered the salmon carpaccio, and it is the best salmon appetizer I've ever had! There's a tang that hits your palette, and the salmon just melts in your mouth! I typically don't care for miso soup or house salads at sushi restaurants but the miso soup is not overly salty and the tofu size/ratio is just right. The house salad is fresh and the ginger dressing has a nice citrus quality to it! Ang's pickled ginger does not leave a strong bitter aftertaste, which I would have otherwise skipped at any other mediocre sushi restaurant. I am looking forward to trying more of Ang's specialty appetizers & rolls! Service is very pleasant! The dark wood decor gives off a low-key vibe. I have been to several sushi restaurants in Suffolk, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach. While I'm no expert on sushi, I know what I like, and I can tell so-so from satisfactory from sublime. I have been to Ang's twice now, and have had a sublime experiences both times. It is my new favorite sushi restaurant, and Ang is my new favorite sushi chef. For the best experience, sit at the bar. Ang is friendly and funny, with a genuine desire to create a personal and special sushi experience for his customers. Tell him what you want, and he will customize menu items for you, or come up with something special just for you. Before long, it seemed like Ang knew my tastes even better than I did, and convinced me to try things I had previously been ambivalent about, only to find a new favorite. I never thought I liked soft-shell crab, since I'd had some with an unpleasant, chewy texture, but Ang quickly picked up on my fondness for crunch, and the way he prepared it, it was so light and delicately crunchy, it melted in my mouth. After learning of our preference for cilantro, Ang made us something off-menu he called "Ang's Mexican Nachos": starting with what was basically a row of potato chips, he piled on chunks of tuna, and topped it with his own version of salsa consisting of ripe tomatoes, cilantro, mango, shallots, jalapeno, soy, and...ginger, maybe? The result was toe-curling. My friend, who doesn't even like mango, was rolling her eyes and moaning with pleasure. The difference, Ang told us, was that he uses a different kind of mango than that typically used in lower-quality sushi restaurants. The kind my friend disliked from other restaurants was too sweet and pulpy in texture, but the kind Ang uses is less sweet, with a firm, smooth texture. He appears to select all of his ingredients with the same knowledge and care, and gave us a fascinating education on how seasonal migration patterns of certain fish affect their fat content and flavor, and how he inspects everything for texture, smell, and flavor to make sure it's as fresh as it should be. You can eat at Ang's with confidence! Another tip, go with a friend or a group, so you can sample as much of the amazing menu as possible. My friend and I have tried more than a dozen things from the menu, as well as a few off-menu items. In addition to the aforementioned nachos and soft-shell crab, the Salmon Carpaccio is also to die for, as is the Crazy Ang Roll. The Hurricane Roll and Spicy Girl Roll are also favorites. The Seafood Naruto, which is wrapped in a paper-thin cucumber sheet instead of seaweed, was also amazing with the extra cilantro Ang added just for us. As much as I would love to keep Ang's all to myself, I'm more interested in making sure he sticks around for a long, long time. I was really excited to try this place because it got really good reviews on yelp and I was tired of just eating at all you can eat sushi places. My favorite thing to order is salmon sushi and it can get extremely expensive if it's not all you can eat. And to be honest, I don't really notice too much of a quality difference to warrant such an expensive price. Anyways there were some definite good points to this place. The soft shell crab appetizer was absolutely delicious. Perfectly cooked and seasoned well. The tiger roll was also absolutely delicious. No soy sauce is necessary because the sauces they put on it give it a nice flavor profile. Things that weren't so great: leeks wrapped in thin slices beef appetizer, crazy ang roll. The beef was tough and I just wasn't feeling the combination of the leeks and beef. The sauce they served it in was good though. The crazy ang roll had a lot going on with it. Although the sauce combination was delicious there was just too much in each roll to really enjoy the flavor. I just felt like the balance of all the ingredients were a little off. The sashimi here is very fresh! Most places you go especially the all you can eat places, the sashimi is not crisp and at times warm or limp. It is really good here at Ang's Bistro. We had the salmon carpoccio and fried softshell crab for appetizers which was really good. The crab was full and crispy, not soggy like most places. I liked that it was cut in four and still retained its full shape. Nice work! The salmon was garnished with capers and were sitting in a sweet soy sauce. It was delicious. Even the accompanying salad was great. I can't describe the dressing. It isn't the usual ginger dressing which is good but the dressing here is different. It's an almost orange cream tangy like flavor. I really liked it. For our entree we had the Sashimi regular, scorpion roll, and Crazy Ang roll. As I said before the sashimi here is very fresh. I will go back to sample their other sashimi selections. The Scorpion roll was OK, the pieces were small with not much filling. Presentation was nice. The Crazy Ang roll was delicious! It was a combination of different fish and I believe grilled beef in a roll presented around a center of roe and crispy panko all sitting on a combination of sauces. This was probably my favorite dish of the night. Will definitely be back to try their other offerings. Blue Fin and Ang's Bistro are currently my favorite places for sushi! read more

The biggest scallops ever in the shrimp and scallop teriyaki. They were soooo good they almost melted in your mouth. The vegetables were so fresh. The nigiri was more fish than rice yet very flavorful and fresh. The sushi rolls were amazing as well. I recommend the spicy city and tiger. read more

We were in the neighborhood and wanted a small bite to eat. Our three requirements were: affordability, freshness, and something to snack on (not a big meal). We came at an odd time, around 4PM so there was only one other occupied table in the place. The decor of this place was very simple and they actually two traditional Japanese dining tables where you would sit on the floor to eat which was pretty cool. We sat down and it took us several minutes to figure out what we wanted. While we were trying to figure out what we wanted, another couple was seated after us and the waitress proceeded to get them drinks and then make small talk with them; it sounded like regular customers. We were ready to order and folded our menus and place them down and waited for her to come by. Instead, our waitress took their order first and obviously their food came out before ours as well. I thought it was extremely rude of her to take their order before even asking if we were ready to order, especially since we were seated first. Besides the rude service, the food was actually very good. We got some seaweed salad, an order of salmon sushi and of the course the crazy Ang sushi which was: seared tuna, avocado, salmon, white fish, spicy mayo/eel sauce and four kinds of tobiko. The seaweed salad portion was actually a lot bigger than I had anticipated and was delicious. The star was definitely the Crazy Ang roll. It was light, refreshing, and very delicious.
