I want to like this farmer's market so much because it is close to me and easy to get to, but alas,…read moreI cannot. It's a fairly small market and it's lacking in produce stands. I get that Farmer's Markets are also a great place to sell other specialty items but the vegetables are the main thing I'm looking for. Some of the vegetables looked sad and wilted already and I couldn't believe the prices they were still charging for them. I did buy some bratwurst from a meat vendor that was there and they had some good stuff available, but again it was pricey. I understand that vendors need to charge more for their items but spending way more than I would at grocery store for the same items is a turn-off for me. Maybe I'm just spoiled because I used to visit farmers markets in Iowa (Iowa City and Dubuque) and both of those were quite spectacular with a wide array of options. The best thing about this market was the fresh squeezed lemonade I bought. Thankfully the vendor offers $2.50 lifetime refills so I can buy something when I visit again.

The most unfriendly farmers market I've ever been to. They dont allow dogs which is mind blowing…read moresince it is an outside market for crying out loud. We have a small dog about 7 pounds and we carry him in a doggie carrier most of the times. He was not allowed to enter the market. As far as produce goes..the place looks good when you first get there but its actually quite small. I bought tomatoes, cucumbers and peaches. Tomatoes were overripped and peaches too sour. I will not be going back..do yourself a favor and go to Libertyville's Farmers Mark that's held on Thursday in downtown Libertyville. Way better selection of produce and friendlier atmosphere all together.

My workweek is a blur. Between meetings and school drop-offs, our family dinners are a team effort…read moreand usually something quick: air fried chicken, a salad, and fruit. Swap in a different protein each day and you get the gist. Simple, functional, done. But weekends? Weekends are for flavor. That is when I pull out a Japanese cookbook from Mitsuwa or cue up one of those beautifully shot YouTube recipe videos I have saved. The kids rally around, ready to help and ready to veto anything green I might try to sneak in. We read the recipe, make a list, and head to the Saturday farmers market. Open from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, May 10 through October 11, the Arlington Heights Farmers Market is where all my plans unravel in the best possible way. Baby eggplants too cute to leave behind. Crisp pickling cucumbers. Potatoes still dusted with dirt. Peaches so fragrant they announce themselves from a stand away. Sour cherries with a perfect bite. Heirloom tomatoes I did not know existed but now dream about. Basil that perfumes the car ride home. Cherry preserves with no sugar. Lavender honey from bourbon barrels. And I have not even mentioned the cheese. The shopping list goes out the window. Imagination takes the wheel. Dinner becomes an adventure and a memory. If you love food, cooking, or just need a little inspiration, this place speaks your language. The language of romance, but with vegetables.

(Palatine used to be a bigger draw for me due to the variety and choices, but AH has caught up!) I particularly love the baguettes from St. Roger's Abbey. The nun selling the bread is a fluent French speaker and I've overheard several French-only conversations with customers. My French is quite pathetic so I just say, "Bonjour!' and "Oui!" This is also a great place to get your fresh produce, cheese, and coffee needs filled. It is conveniently located next to the Memorial Library, so you can check out some books and then get some produce, bread, and coffee. The AH Farmer's Market is a nice way to kick off the weekend in my opinion.

When it comes to farmer's markets I'm like Goldilocks. Some like Daley and Green City are great but…read moretoo big...a human ant farm. Some are like Lincoln Square and Muscatine are too small. This one, however, is just right! Cozy, welcoming, never crowded. And with a tidy collection of much needed selections. Duhviously there's the produce and flowers- the staples of every FM. And those are good. The variety of apples, tomatoes, and potatoes are stupendous. All the other seasonal stuff is the usual jive but the myriad Michigan berries are big and juicy. The flowers though not very plentiful in kinds, are very good quality and priced well. By that competitive for a FM on the NS and most the same price Sonora simple. Some tasty WI cheeses are sold. They also sell fresh and natural dog bones (bones for dogs) of different sizes (alas G is too small for the smallest) so you can get fido a treat. The highlights to this reviewer are the the soup and salad guy who only uses super high quality ingredients and employees people in need ( those in transition or differently abled) also the knife and blade sharpening guy! So warm, charming, and great prices. They know their stuff too! It's open from 7am to 1pm Wed from spring to fall. Don't be a grumpy old bear and stop on by!
