After a few sessions with John, I don't believe 'Career Coach' is a complete or accurate portrayal…read moreof who he is or what he does. Anyone can throw on a cardigan and prescribe you a career based on an educated guess at what role you'd look good in; and it's pretty easy to tell someone how to do the good things better in a way that makes them believe , if just for a second, that they can 'still do this!' How exciting and fluffy! That's not John. John is a catalyst, a diagnostician, and one hell of a mirror. What differentiates John from everyone else in the field is his assessment, comprehension, and translation of the shadow self. In just 3 sessions, he managed to pull up and pin-point recurring patterns (positive and negative) in my life that 17 years of therapy failed to reveal. These 'light bulb moments' have led to some big changes in the way I present myself, present my brand, determine my brand's value, plan for future success, and set applicable boundaries. He has, in wonderful depth, shown me the work I still need to do to develop as a leader and in my interpersonal relationships. If you're serious about dusting off, showing up, and starting over - Make John your call to action. He sees because he cares.

If you're looking for progress and tangible results, investing your resources in working with him is undeniably worthwhile. John's approach is not only solution-oriented but also deeply collaborative--he takes the time to listen intently to the problem at hand, evaluates all options, and crafts the most effective and efficient resolution. Working with him means investing in yourself. He helps you advocate for yourself and is worth the resources as you get back invaluable advice. I requested the career counselling service in order for him to help me navigate a problem with my boss. John helped me advocate for a positive change as our relationship was strained by helping me with communication and advocating my needs. Ever since the conversation, my relationship with my supervisor improved! My experience working with him was nothing short of exceptional. Not only did he address my concerns promptly and with impressive results, but his thoughtful approach allowed me to work in a far less stressful environment. John doesn't just get the job done--he elevates the entire process, ensuring the best possible outcome every time. Highly recommended for anyone seeking expert guidance and results that truly make a difference.

I am former graduate of the program. At the time I had recently moved to Vancouver from the Island…read moreto be closer to my daughter (having just gone through a painful separation). Although it was in some respects a rewarding experience, there was one extremely negative interaction with one of the counsellors, Chris, which continues to bother me and has overshadowed any of the positive that came from the experience. During one on the group sessions, Chris approached me and very quietly made the comment "you're just a three dressed up as a nine". The phrase is a from a pop song of the same title which refers to a person that is normally a "3" (not attractive) presenting superficially or from a distance as a "9" (attractive). It goes on to say "who do you think you are" and other similarly negative phrases. This came out of nowhere and nothing to this with career development. I did not respond at the time being in an obvious state of shock. I found the interaction incredibly demeaning and disrespectful, particularly given the context of having come for help during a very difficult time and her being a counsellor. It was recommended that I share this , regardless of the time frame, for my own well-being. Since there is a real and inherent power imbalance between counsellors and clients, I think it would be essential that counsellors conduct themselves ethically and professionally in any and all interactions. The harm caused by not doing so should not underestimated. K

Transitions literally changed my life... I enrolled in a 3-week session here in 2010 after being…read morelaid off. At first I was a little hesitant, unsure whether I was wasting my time (let's face it, these programs can be pretty cheesy, and totally useless - I pictured childish exercises like writing down things I wanted to be when I grow up, or reviewing/updating my resume (which I could have done at home). However, my experience at Transitions was far more than just career counselling... the two facilitators Dean and Kris actually cared about our group, were passionate about personal development and seeking to understand ourselves better. They took time to build trust and share their own personal stories and struggles, and worked hard to bond our group together. On the last day believe it or not there were tears. And by the way, our group consisted of maybe 18 people, in a range of ages from 18-70. So a very diverse group! Some were students, some were moms looking to return to work, and some were people like me - looking for a change, feeling lost, and needing a place to start. The Transitions course tackled not only vocational counselling (both in a group and one-on-one) but so much more - we learned how to identify negative patterns in our lives, and identify and prioritize our own personal (and professional) values. We really had the opportunity to take a good look at ourselves and the choices we'd made. It makes sense in a holistic way to understand your past before looking ahead to the future. I would highly, highly recommend this course for anyone considering a new career, or seeking a change, or really anyone who feels a bit lost and needs some guidance. It's a super supportive atmosphere, and I think the cost is also covered by EI. (I barely found any info on this program online.. hope it still exists? And didn't become one of those rare gems that is super successful, then loses funding?? )
