I've made frequent trips to this Andersen Bakery in the last two weeks, usually for snacks but once for lunch. The first time I came in about 3 PM and most of the bread/pastries were sold out by that time so I got a creamy french. The bread was nice and crunchy. I got a hot turkey pepperjack for lunch during the busy lunch hour this week and the tiny store got VERY crowded. The sandwich, nevertheless, was delicious - although I swear I get more avocado in my sandwich when I order at other Anderesens. In short, Andersen is a great place to get fresh pastries and yummy sandwiches on a large variety of bread. Be warned, their stock of baked goods seems to diminish rapidly after the lunch rush so it's best to hit the store early if there's something you're specifically looking for. I actually work across the street from this bakery. It is conveniently located for people who work in the area (and there are many of us) to pick up a quite bite. They have a good selection of pastry and snack. They also provide a pretty decent sit-in area where one can pick up a coffee and work from there. Why 3 stars? Well, none of the item on the menu makes me fee like "I must come back to Andersen for it". Some people complain they are over-priced but this I won't complain; it is in downtown San Francisco so what can we complain about? Nonetheless, I really do not find anything special about it that "I must go over to Andersen for", other than that it's conveniently located right across from my office. I am a creature of habit and nothing brings me greater lunch pleasure than the delicious reliability of ordering my Veggie Feast sandwich or Tomato Raviolini soup online and having it waiting for me at Andersen's. The bread the sandwiches are made on is tasty and fresh (I recommend the country sour whole wheat), the soup is hot, the prices are reasonable and the service is friendly and consistent. Sometimes the line gets long or the small space gets hectic during the lunch hour, which is why I recommend ordering through their website and picking up in store so you can be in and out. I stopped in for a bagel + cream cheese on my way to the airport. After the trek to SFO and the ordeal that was security, I was so disappointed to take out my bagel and find it practically burned beyond recognition. I uploaded a photo just in case you think I am too picky about the extent of the toastedness of a bagel. I even gave them another chance a few weeks later and the 2nd bagel STILL came back charred (although slightly less charred than the 1st one). Go half a block down Market Street to Little Griddle. Conveniently located in Fox Plaza building across from Starbucks and the PostOffice quick 2 block walk up Market from my apartment at 33 8th Street. Reasonable delicious fresh bakery bread and pastries. They make hugh sandwiches! Loved my raisin apple bread and garlic butter French bread! Friendly staff and a good selection of breakfast-type breads, both sweet and savory. Grab a cheese danish or ham & cheese croissant to go with your coffee. Better prices than expected for this kind of thing balances the neighborhood. The onion-cheddar bagel was far more sweet onion than cheddar, and I've found that their bagels are much lighter and fluffier than most, more like an English muffin than the dense bagel I expect. I got the tomato caprese and avocado sandwich. While it was tasty, I was a little annoyed with how it was put together -- ingredients were a bit haphazardly arranged on my baguette. For the price, I think it should be a bit more neat, with ingredients more evenly distributed. I picked up the same sandwich for my dad and he loved it, but then again he was really hungry and pretty much loves anything when he's that hungry. I was not so happy this most recent visit for the following reason: I noticeed a counter person that handles food sneeze rather violently into her hands - two or three times. So I observed her for a few minutes and although she seemed to hesitate momentarily, and look around, she NEVER WASHED HER HANDS. She simply kept handling food and giving it to customers. GLAD it was not my food, but aren't there some rules? Shouldn't it be a sensible idea to WASH YOUR HANDS after you sneeze all over them. With this flu season being so bad why doesn't a FOOD WORKER know enough to be CLEAN? Yuck, I don't know if I can ever go back here after seeing that. I was so happy to see a new place open in this building, but when I found out it was Andersen Bread I was super excited. I love their Saffron Twists and their hot sandwiches are pretty good too. I have yet to try their deserts, but they sell pretty quickly from what I can tell, so they must be good. Literally half the time my "no tomatoes" request goes unfulfilled, as does my "add turkey" request, which is a bigger deal b/c of the extra charge. Two stars seems a bit mean, but according to Yelp it represents "Meh....I've had better," which is my sentiment when it comes to this establishment. I generally only come here when I don't pack a lunch, since it is at the bottom of my building. Their pastry and bread products are OK - the cookies and the baguettes are stale though. I generally stick with the spicy turkey sandwich. It's definitely better than subway. My biggest complaint is that the sometimes it seems like they are just being really cheap with what they give you. I bought a salad once and the lettuce was slimy from going bad. Another time I bought soup and there was barely any in the container. I bought a bagel with cream cheese and it seemed like they warmed it up in the microwave since it was squishy and chewy with no crunch! (You're a bakery, buy a toaster!!). Tonight, I got a sandwich, which they usually serve with a pickle and bread, and I didn't even get a napkin. I'm sure I'll be going back though, since I'm too lazy to leave the building. read more

Stay away at all costs. Their pre packaged salads looked like they were prepared in 1995. Chicken looks so disgustingly manufactured and inedible, lettuce leaves are yellowing and wilting, and the Parmesan cheese smelled so abnormally foul. I used to go to Grain D'Or at the mall with my mom when I was a little girl. I remember eating the strawberry danish there. It was heavenly. When I found out that Andersen Bakery had them, I had go when I was in town. I bought about six to go. I was a little nervous that maybe I'd hyped them up in my head for 22 years and they wouldn't be as good, but they were just as heavenly. This review is on the customer service of this lady (filipino or samoan??). I find her disrespectful and rude to certain customers such as me. I've been there several times as it is close to where I work. I feel this filipino lady has bias on certain customers. She is much more friendly on the repeated customers who wear suits. Today I felt disrespected by her service. I was waiting patiently in line as she was impatiently and giving an attitude training the new staff who was trying to learn. They were serving a customer in front of me. Then later that filipino lady assisted this guy right away who came in minutes after me and was not even in line. She served him and took his payment as I was still patiently waiting in line. I could tell he was a repeated customer by their interactions. She was really friendly to him. But when it came my turn, she greeted me with a dark, unfriendly face. She has always been horrible. Anyways, I will not go back anymore because she is very disrespectful to certain customers and only choose customers she likes to be friendly with. I like Andersen Bakery's bread, but this would be the branch I would not go to again because of horrible customer service time and time again by this filipino lady. Their sandwiches are delicious! So far I've tried their mozzarella and eggplant and caprese. I've also tried their black sesame bagel with cream cheese. Everything has been tasty, the service is fast and friendly and prices are very reasonable. I haven't been to Anderson's for a bagel in months and I wanted to give them a chance. I didn't check the bagel till I got back to work. Open it up to find my bagel is not only flat like a pancake but it's burnt! I could only eat the top of it and had to throw the rest away. I feel like I just threw away $2. The cobb salads are fantastic and just the right amount of everything. The line can be intense during lunch because there's not much space to line up- and you end up standing close to diners enjoying their meal. Gets a little awkward that way, however once you've placed your order the food comes up pretty quick and you can dash off! read more
