I really enjoyed the tour of Flannery O'Connor's farm. Even if you aren't a fan of the Southern author, it's worth a visit because the grounds are beautiful. The farm is also pet-friendly with the exception of inside the house. Tours start at 10am Tuesday through Saturday and 2pm on Sunday. My tour lasted about 40 minutes. The farm is closed on Mondays. You park next to the Interpretative Center where you purchase tickets in the gift shop. They have a small museum-like exhibit displaying Flannery's dresses and glass figurines. There is a short uphill walk from the Interpretative Center to the house and they have a golf cart available for those who do not wish to walk there. The tour meets at the back of the house. There are a couple of steps you have to walk up to get inside so it is not wheelchair friendly. The tour guide was informative and it's really interesting in part because so much of her furniture and belongings are still there. I would say two hours to three hours would be the perfect amount of time to take the tour and see the outbuildings and fenced in peacock pen. I would definitely return again to let my dogs explore the nature trail and to have a picnic next to the pond. Afterwards I also drove by the house where Flannery's mother grew up and where Flannery lived briefly as a teenager at 311 West Greene Street in downtown Milledgeville. Flannery is buried at Memory Hill Cemetery. I can't wait to visit Flannery's childhood home on 207 East Charlton Street in Savannah. read more

There are two reasons to visit here. One is to see a historic farmhouse kept in the style of the 1960s. The other is because you are interested in Flannery O'Connor. o'Connor lived and worked here between 1951 and death in 1964. Her mother left the house and moved into town after O'Connor's death. As a result, the house is pretty much in the condition that it was when she was living and riding here. O'Connor's stories and novels evoke Southern culture, and interweave complex ideas about religion, education and human relationships. However, this isn't the place to do a literary review. I think anyone who has been enchanted by O'Connor's writings would find a visit to Andalusia fascinating. As for the rest of you, I would say it's a good stop for an hour just to walk around the grounds. And it's free, except for the house tour, which is quite reasonably priced. After being a fan of the late Flannery O'Connor's writings since I discovered her in college, I was finally able to make it out to Milledgeville. It was a pilgrimage, so your value may vary depending on your pilgrim status, but few could deny that it is a lovely old farmland in a rustic setting. One of the many glories of Flannery's writings was in her economy - very readable stories with variable interpretations covered in just a few pages. For that reason, I highly encourage others to dig out some reading prior to their visit or for the curious to pick a story or two out of "A Good Man Is Hard To Find". Then, when you see the dilapidated barn on the premises, you know it's not just a barn but the barn where the Bible salesman took the girl with the wooden leg. This simultaneous wave of emotions (pleasantness with a faint disturbing trace) makes one feel like they're living the fiction. And of course the fiction came from inside the house. There wasn't a tour per se but just a minute-long speech and a suggestion to watch a brief video. There is honestly not much to see inside the house - it's more a place to feel. You do get to see Flannery's room set up exactly as it was, from the typewriter to the crutches she had to use due to lupus. There's a gift shop in the back where you can be the first person you know with a Southern Gothic bumper sticker. There are peacocks on the premises, a remnant of the days when Flannery had as many as 50 strutting their stuff. It's down to 3 now, and sadly they are caged but the guide says it's for their own good. It almost feels like a story. As for the rest of the area, you can roam around, but we didn't, deciding to go into downtown to see her grave and her church. By all means grab a beautiful hand-drawn map of "O'Connor Country" inside the house, which gives you clear directions of everything you'd want to see in Milledgeville, both within and beyond the shadow of this immortal. read more

Andalusia is the former home of famous Southern Gothic writer, Flannery O'Connor. She wrote many of her most famous works while living on the property and as you wander the grounds, you will notice little details and elements of the area that seem to have inspired her writing. It has even been said that the milk barn that sits on the property might have inspired the one you find the characters in in Flannery's story, "Good Country People." The property is peaceful and houses a couple of beautiful peafowl, since Flannery adored them and considered them to be spiritually connected creatures. Take a picnic and eat by the pond on a summer afternoon, then make sure to stop in for the tour! The house was recently gifted to the local college and they've done amazing restoration work, so it's worth the few bucks you'll pay in admission! read more

We had a great time. For those who don't , this is the home of Flannery O'Connor - great southern and Catholic, novelist. My wife and I are big FO fans - she even more. As this was a hop-skip-and a jump from the Ritz at Reynolds Plantation (for her big birthday WEEK celebration) it was only natural to include this and a brief tour of Milledgeville on the agenda. They have done a good just preserving the buildings, but have a long way to go. It was cool to see where she wrote and did her thing. I had a 24-hour layover in Atlanta and decided to take a small literary tour. I long admired Flannery O'Connor and relished the idea of seeing her beloved home. I am not going to post pictures. You will simply have to go see the farm for yourself. Pictures would not do the place justice. It is beautiful! I cried at its beauty. I can see why Flannery felt she had the world at her feet as she sat on her front porch. And, it is so incredibly Southern that the Foundation that runs and takes care of the author's home basically leaves signs out that say, "Come on in, the door's open, just don't track up the carpet." My visit was joyously complete when I had the opportunity to meet one of the foundation volunteers. We had a wonderful visit with each other. I think Ms. O'Connor's spirit may have been happy to see us enjoy each other's company and have a good discussion about philosophy. read more

My partner and I have just recently moved to the area, and FO is an author who has intrigued me since I first read her work in college. Once I found out her home was minutes away from where we lived, we had to make a trip. Judging from the profile description, I was not expecting a tour guide, and I assumed we would just be able to look at a couple rooms from behind velvet ropes and peruse a gift shop. However, the experience we had was so much more. First of all, the property is BEAUTIFUL. Despite being right off a fairly busy road, Andalusia feels tucked away and intimate. We were greeted as soon as we walked into the door by a lovely woman named Lily. She welcomed us to the home, and then proceeded to give us an expert tour. She was fascinating to listen to, chock full of information about FO that you won't find in any Google search. After our tour, we were free to roam the grounds and the house. Something that was truly exceptional about the museum was the fact that you can touch almost everything! You can run your fingers along the table where FO and her family dined, you can play the piano she herself played. Outside of the house, the grounds are gorgeous, and you can even check out some peacocks in the aviary! We will certainly be back for more interesting conversation, and also for some of the great events they host on site! It was roughly a year ago when I discovered Flannery O'Connor, and since then, I continue to love her and her writings so very much. Thus, after reading nearly all her stories and her subsequent biographies, I travelled to Andalusia to ascertain the lens through which Flannery saw the world around her, and after visiting here, I truly understand how she wrote. When reading her stories, I pictured wide, grassy fields with trees surrounding each side; this is Andalusia in a nutshell. With dilapidated barns, and an old house, you really come to embody how Flannery lived her life, feeling her everyday pains and her shining optimism. Walking through her house and seeing her bedroom will inspire a sadness in you. Yet, it exposes fundamental characteristics of Flannery: she was a determined writer who, despite facing obstacles in almost every facet of her life, found beauty in her sorrow. Andalusia is the perfect mirror into understanding the world of Flannery, and of course, any "Fannery"(as my AP English teacher calls me) must make the pilgrimage here. And if you are a "Fannery," then I suggest rereading her stories with your memories and visualisations of Andalusia in mind; you will arrive at a clearer delineation of who Flannery is and what she believed and thought. read more
